This is really only the result of a bit of general GAS but has anyone tried this lens? The other two options, the f2.8 and the 17- 40 f4 seem to have mixed reviews. All opinions welcome.

@Steelo uses it and loves it.

I've had a go of it and its sharper in the corners than my 17-40 f4L, dont think there's THAT much difference in the centre of the image.

colour rendition and general image quality is better so I'd say choose it over the 17-40 F4L and the 16-35 f2.8L any day.

Reviews compare it in image quality to the Zeiss Distagon 21mm f2.8 which can be no bad thing, couple that with a bit of zoom flexibility and you're onto a winner.

Like mine , use on a 7D2 and 1dx. Colours are great and everything is sharp.

Brilliant lens far better than my old 17-40 L. Sharpness is near on par with my 24-70 f2.8 II L, Only thing to watch out for is making sure sharpness goes right into corners. I had to send my 1st copy back before I got a good one.

I use one with my 6D, can't think of a bad thing to say about it :)

Had to hold of buying one of these for my 5dmk3 the moment they came out, but 2 years interest free credit from Park Cameras earlier this year saw one in my camera bag!

I cannot say a bad word about it, the IS is great, and silent compared to my other 2 lenses.

If you are on full frame it's got fantastic coverage, not so sure I'd by one to use on a crop body.

I tried a friends 16-35 f2.8 and admittedly only one copy but very unimpressed with the edge/corner sharpness wide open at 16mm.

17-40 has no IS and is not really in the same league as the the 2 16-35 lenses.

Good lens comparison tool here

You can have several of the sharpness plots open side by side to compare

This one is quite nice as well

Have one and love it - it's staggeringly sharp and the best quality full frame ultra-wide Canon makes.

I'd argue it's the best 16-35ish lens on the market, regardless of lens mount, and at the very least definitely for Canon. IS is superb too.

+1. There are not many other ultra wide zooms worth owning, certainly none other with Canon badge. (and I've tried many)

Well, thanks everybody. I don't think I've ever seen such unanimous praise for a lens, or anything else come to that.

Great lens, very sharp in the corners, better than my older 16-35mm F2.8 MKII L and in someways very comparable to my 17mm TSE lens, gives great results with the Sony A7R, the sunstar isnt bad either!

Image below shot with the Canon 16-35mm F4 L IS with the sony a7r.

It's possibly the best value for money lens on the market.

It's even ok for Astro stuff...

If you are thinking of buying new I'd suggest getting from Calumet. Not only do you qualify for the Canon £75 cashback, but they are also doing 2 year interest free credit (which admittedly other retailers also are), but they also allow you to get £50 off accessories. Seems to include everything in their accessory category apart from vouchers. Can also combine with other offers e.g. if you get a selected bag as the £50 free accessory, you can then qualify for a Gorillapod tripod for £19.50.

Got one for my 6d, love it to bits :-) Much better than my 17-40L, Gets great reviews

It's in a different league to the 17-40, which is actually a very average lens considering it's an L.

Simply the best! Bought this lens recently after much deliberating and am so glad I did.
This has to be the ultimate wide angle Canon lens and is worth every penny.
No regrets other than not having it sooner.

It is an absolutely fabulous lens. I used to own the older 17-40L a few years back, but I got the 16-35 F4 L IS a couple of months back and it is stunning. Sharp all over, has IS, its 1mm wider than what I had (yes, yes I know 1mm) but it can make a difference. I read many reviews before purchasing and lots said it was the best wide angle zoom Canon have ever made (perhaps apart from the 11-24) but thats in a different price bracket completely! To say it is better than a 16-35 F2.8L v2 is some statement and I fully believe it is, I see this is backed up above by awhyu. That is also a stunning image awhyu!!!
