Operating problem/Canon 40D

Problem with my Canon 40D/Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens. New lens on Friday. Using the camera in basic zone shooting mode, everything works as it should. When I try to use any creative zone shooting mode, whatever aperture or shutter speed the shutter remains open for a long period or until I operate the shutter button again. I have tried numerous options in various lighting conditions, always the same result. Am I missing something simple that will prove to be an embarrassment or has my camera a fault?

Mirror lockup switched on in the menus?

Tried removing the battery and performing a complete reset of all functions?

Just re-read the OP's post and I would deffo try this!
