Anyone else planning on starting OU in February? Or is already studying/has before?

What are/were you doing?

I registered today and have my agreements and funding application on the way. I should be good to go for a diploma of higher education in criminology and psychological studies starting in February :D

Hope that you enjoy it, I certainly did. 16 courses over 13 years and then I went back and did an MBA :)
For my BA I did mainly Science, Technology & Maths with a bit of Social Science involved, ended up with a 1st Hons.
It got to the stage where I was relieved when a course and exam were finished and then a couple of weeks later I would be impatient for the next course units to arrive.
You have to be either disciplined and plan the workload or able to work under pressure when you have to get an assignment in the next day even though you have not studied the unit
I fluctuated between the two and on a couple of courses it helped that the tutors lived nearby and I could post my assignments through their letterbox on the evening of the cut-off date

Have fun
Kev

Did the OU about 12 years ago but a family tragedy put paid to that with just 90 units left for the degree. Thought I would pick up were I left off last year but have to start from the very beginning :( Still I do enjoy it and hopefully will finish this time, only another 300 units to go :)

I've got a friend who's just done a course (the same one I'm about to do, actually) and is waiting to start the next one in February - she can't wait! She mentioned there's sometimes a sizable break between units (she had a good few months wait at one point, I think) which I'm not really looking forward to but who knows - maybe I'll welcome the break  I've done the brick and mortar college route about five times so far  and I think this might be better for me, working from home. We'll see :whistling:

Ach, that's rubbish you can't pick up where you left off  What are you doing? My course total is only about 240. I'm doing 2 modules first, both worth 30 credits.

I have course credits that are more than 20 yrs old and still good, I don't understand why yours wouldn't still be.

No you cant most courses have a limited time span and all but 120 units of mine were out of date. I could have salvaged those if I had finished my degree this year, unfortunately that was too much. Trust me I thoroughly checked I really didn't want to repeat my study with similar but more up to date courses.

BSc honours Psychology 360 units for the degree recognised by the BPS if you follow the correct route.

Steve

Edit DId two units last year at 30 credits each, doing one at 60 & one at 30 this year

Ah cool! Mine is the equivalent of a HND I think.. I done a HND in photography and the workload for that was quite heavy so I can imagine how it'll be for Criminology and Psychology. I have lesser qualifications in psychology and sociology so hopefully they'll save me from feeling like a fish out of water  I can't wait :)

I suppose it depends on what you studied. I really did double check this, the courses I took were time limited

From OU documentation. My original degree route was Batchelor degree without honours

GQR 3.1.1 Time limits
(a) The University has time limits on all its undergraduate qualifications to ensure coherence of academic study, external cr
edibility and that satisfactory academic
progress is being made. You must therefore complete your qualification within the time
limits set.
(b) If you do not achieve the credit required for your qualification within the set time limit
you will not be eligible for the qualification.
(c) Subject to any specific requirements of your qualification, the University has approved the following maximum time limits for all undergraduate qualifications:

60-credit certificates: 4 years

120-credit certificates of HE: 7 years

120-credit diploma: 7 years

240-credit foundation degree: 12 years

240-credit diplomas of HE: 12 years

300-credit bachelor degrees without honours: 14 years

360-credit honours degrees: 16 years

480-credit honours degree: 16 years
Time limit requirements will be given in each of the specific qualification regulations.

That's the course I'd love to do but the fees! :gag:

I know, but it's not a career thing for me so I couldn't really justify it.
What you don't fancy doing a "Cracker" then?

It may be that credits earned before the limitations came it don't run out? I don't remember there being any when I first studied.

Bit of an old thread but nvm, how was the course? Did it really take up the time they said you should allocate to it? I ask as I've had my credits transferred from uni and am starting in October...

Jono, from experience the amount of time you have to put in varies with your ability to take in the information. A 60 credit course is a lot of work bearing in mind most people also have to do 'work' work as well, you really have to be prepared to commit to it though. I've not studied properly with them for years, when I did it was very rewarding but life and business got in the way too much and I gave it up.

I too gave it up. I discovered I was pregnant and it hasn't been an easy pregnancy. I also went through a (brief, short thankfully) break up with my husband so, like Steep, life just got in the way for me. I stuck at it longer than I'd have been able to if I was at a brick and mortar uni.

From my experience (I was a member of a facebook group of hundreds of people doing the course), it varies from person to person. Some people could whizz through a weeks equivalent of work in a weekend whilst others struggled to complete it in the week.

Thanks for the replies, I think I have enough time, I've waited a year to start too so ready to get back into it. lets hope I feel the same in October, might come back to this thread if I can think of anymore questions, thanks again :)

I think the earlier you start the easier it's likely to be to fit the work into your life. You've not forgotten how to study for one thing and probably don't yet have as much interference from other stuff.

It was exam week for me this week. Hopefully I've done well enough but it was hard work and I have to say pretty stressful on the days running up to the exam. Few months off now before it all starts again :)
