Edit My Images
Yes
My employer has for the first time made funds available for people to do 'personal development' courses. Now with my interest in photography I have been looking for photography or Photoshop courses. One of the approved course suppliers is the OU.

On their website I can only find one course that they do for distance learning and that is a 10 week 'creating and sharing better images' course.

Have any of you had experience of any OU course like this and if so, would you consider it to be worthwhile or do you think it is 'too basic'. There are a few local colleges and universities also on the approved list but not many of them do any kind of evening or distance learning course for photography.

Any help on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Just finished it and awaiting results.

I consider myself to still be very much a beginner (had SLR just over 1 year), but I found this course a bit too basic. I can honestly say I did'nt learn anything new.....and even getting a "free" copy of Elements 5 (given the cost of the course it was hardly free) didn't make up for it. There were loads on the course though who found it hugely helpful, so don't just go on my opinion.....;)

I personally found I have learned just as much from buying a couple of photo mags a month and doing all the tutorials on the free discs.

Lucky you to have such good employers.

Pretty much agree with photostar.
Though I did find the elements 5 tutorials useful
The added bonus is if you register with them ( the OU) Adobe will allow you students rates on their related products ie I and a few others picked up CS3 extended version retail price about £880 for around £140 so with the registration costs thats still a huge saving if you are looking for this type of software

Thanks for the advice bot of you, I suspected it may have been a rather 'too basic' course. If work are going to pay then I want something that is going to be worthwhile and that I can learn from.

Well the good news is that I found a local run Photoshop course. 11 weeks in total - okay only 2 hrs on a Friday morning but anyway - my employer has told me that they have agreed to fund this in total and I start this in late September until early December..... hopefully my post production skills will increase ten fold.....

JPS - out of interest, how much is it for the course and what is the expected class size (if you know!)

Well for the 11 week (2hr a week) course it is £40.20 and when I went to sign up for it I was told that there was so far six others on the course. Thing is, I have picked the one on a Friday but the course is also running on Monday and Wednesdays so I don't know how many have picked to go on those other two days or how many have joined after I did for the Friday one.
