Hey guys !

Recently me and the missus went for a trip to ireland, got some fantastic pics, but i was stupid enough to change lenses when we where near the top of a mountain.

needless to say, abit of water got on my mirror, being where we where, i thought it was better to not try and clean it, as i might damage it more and left it to sort itself out.

when we got back down, we ended up at the zoo, carried on taking pics, but they all looked blurry through the viewfinder, however the autofocus was working OK and when takign the photos they where comming out perfect on the LCD, and on further inspection, the actual photos are fantastic, so i figured it was just humidty or something on the mirror from when i got the couple of water drops in there.

after a few days leaving it to dry out, its still the same, so i figure i need to clean something, but i dont know what, or how to do it. all i do know, is that is not the sensor, is it the mirror, or the plastic bit that sits at the top near the eye peice ? also, whats the best way to go about cleaning it ?

Thanks guys, sorry for the long post !

Kev

Kev,

I would advise caution if you attempt to clean the mirror. The silvering is on the front side and is quite fragile. I would say that if the AF is performing well then any residue on the mirror is minor and it may be safer to live with it.

The focussing screen is another matter. It's fairly simply to remove it and give it a gentle clean (taking care not to remove the AF point indication etchings).

Thanks guys,

The only photography shops i know of in and around nottingham is the jikes of jessops etc, which i dont trust with advice nevermind cleaning my camera lol.

ill have a go at cleaning the focus screen, and soo how we go from there.

Thanks again, anymore idea's keep em comming !

london camera exchange in the middle of notts.to the left of the town hall in the square., as you look at the lions.
up about five mins walk.

Thanks buddy !

Dont suppose you know approx how much a service is and what kinda turnaround they have do you ?

I have seen a how to thread for removing the focussing screen somewhere, but now i cant find it anywhere !!!! any ideas ?

I do wonder about repeated mentions of mirror fragility. Back when I knew less than I do now I had a rather 'aggressive' mirror cleaning session with my 450D with one of them fancy camera-cleaning cotton buds and some cleaning fluid. No ill effects noticed. Focusing still fine, videwfinder view still fine. Imagine my surprise when I later found out I'd probably knackered my camera  ....

Anyhoo, I don't recommend you follow my actions, but the mirror coating doesn't seem to be as fragile as it is often made out to be

OK,

ive had the focus screen out, and removed the annoying dust thats been there for a little while now ! but i dont have anything to clean it with, you can almost see the smudges on it which are causing the blury viewfinder image, im going to go to this camera place in town, if theres more than a day or 2 turnaround i fancy doing it myself, will they sell somethign for me to do it with or should i be looking on the internet for the stuff ?

Thanks

Thanks bob,

I have been to the shop, the only cleaning service they offer is sensor cleaning, and that they can only do the same with the focus screen as i can at home, they didnt have peck pads, sensor swabs or LS2,

What they did have is a pack of 20 optic wipes that look similar to pec pads, and some VDust Plus, made by visible dust - sensor cleaning fluid, so ive bought both of those, is the VDust Plus safe to use on the focus screen ?

Thanks, sorry for all the questions ! i just want to get it right...

I can't find any info on this Kev but leave it with me and I'll see what I can dig up.

Kev,

Katz Eye, who make high spec focussing screens, only sanction cleaning with a mild solution of washing up liquid diluted with clean water. They strongly advise against any sort of solvent or alcohol based cleaners.

Bob, Thankyou very much for your help.

ill give it a go with some gentle soapy water.

Thanks again

Kev, are you sure you just haven't inadvertently altered the dioptric adjuster? Have you tried readjusting it to see if that improves things?
