For about 5 months i've been questioning whether I wanted a 5dMkII and this morning after doing some calculations I relaised I could afford it if I sold a bit of gear and added some cash

the next thing I new I had ordered one with a 17-40L

can't wait to have a play tomorrow and decide if I really do want it, then I'll either keep it and sell my gear or send it back and stop questioning whether I want one or not.

So look out in the next few days for a 7d with grip, sigma 10-20, sigma 30mm 1.4 and a tamron 17-50 in the classifieds add all being well!

excited!

I'm sure you'll love the 5D2. I've had my one since July 09 and find it an amazing camera. I did think of backing it up by trading my 40D for a 7D but in the end I bought a 2nd hand 1D3.
First thing you'll notice is the lack of speed compared to the 7D.
The 17-40 is a nice sharp lens and capable of great results and on the 5D2 you really will get 17mm at the wide end.

Enjoy
Mike

speed in fps or speed when focusing? or both?

Hmm I did the same thing, although i loved the FF experience i found the 5D MKII to be lacking in every department when it comes to features compared to the 7D.
I sold mine and brought another 7D where i am happy to say i will remain until Canon bring out a FF body with a decent array of features and a far better AF system than the 9 point's currently available..

will let you know when it goes in the classifieds, it's a sharp copy and less than 6 months old well be selling for £240

It's a hard call between the 5D2 and 7D in my opinion - That is one of a total amateur. I have grown to love my 7D, but remember the first set of pics I took with my 5D2 where I was blown away by the quality as well as the cropability of it. A few months ago, if I could only have kept 1 camera it would have been the 5D2, now .............. having spent more time with the 7D, I'm not so sure.

I haven't been in a situation where the 5D2 focus has been slow or not got the shot, but that 7D........ that focus speed and accuracy is very good.

I wish you the very best of luck in picking between 2 excellent cameras in my opinion.

Just bought a 5D2 arrived this morning along with a 24-105mm lens
Stunning IQ, Blows my 50D away
Turned off Auto ISO + Highlight Tone Priority + ALO
Activated additional 6 focus points
Enjoy your new toy when it arrives

You are going to love it. It's one camera which gets me excited about photography.
Awesome image quality, totally unsurpassed.
The more I use it the more I love it.

I'm another one who sold my 5D mkII and got the 7D. I don't normally shoot wide angle but I always wanted to go longer. I shot an event with a 135mm f/2L and on FF it was too short to get me in on the action. I tried to crop my images to bring the subject closer but it only showed that the images weren't as sharp as I had hoped because the AF tracking couldn't keep up with the pace and it was all over the place. I got myself the 70-200mm to deal with it but after shooting another event, even 200mm wasn't close enough for me! Same thing happened with the AF too.

Now with the 7D, I am at 320mm at the longest end of my 70-200, and the AF tracks what I want it to track (instead of focusing on the tree in the background for example). The noise doesn't bother me, it's more noticable in colour shots but if you check my gallery, I am a sucker for B&Ws :)

The 5D mkII is a very nice camera though, I loved it when I owned it. I guess the decision will always fall on what you want to do with your camera. The 5D mkII was nice, but the 7D worked for me.

you did good, not a massive 17-40 fan (I've found the AF issues to get a lot better with faster lenses and my 24-70 is much quicker than the one I had on loan)

For stuff that doesn't move it is the sex though :D

5D2 works for me. Great lightbox for portraits and landscapes.

It's an Orgasm!

;-)

Well, initial test and I'm sold.

I was impressed with the 7d noise at 5000, but the 5dMk2 - holy crap, blew it out of the water.

It also just got the picture so much better, hard to describe but taking two photos with exactly the same settings and same lens the 5d just did a better job of showing what was really there.

I think it's safe to say I pretty much love it and will be keeping it for sure

The 5D Mark II is a stellar camera. I love mine!

Once you get used to the image quality from the 5Dmk2 you'll never want to use an inferior camera again. The image quality is superb, the detail and colours are superb, high ISO is superb... I feel sorry for those who haven't experienced it. :D

Having been bought up on film cameras in the pre auto-everything days, the so called lack of focussing speed and other features on the 5DII that everyone seems to think are so vital for taking pictures, matters not a jot to me.

What does matter to me is the end result; outstanding images with great IQ, and the 5DII is more than capable of doing that.

can't honestly say I noticed the difference with the speed of AF - was very rapid to me- didn't seem any slower in one shot mode thats for sure

Focus is it's only downfall. It is frustrating sometimes.

When it hits it, I LOVE it and forgive it.

I'm constantly amazed by the images produced by my 5D2.....theres just something about them that is missing from a crop camera.

I would love a 5dmk2, unfortunately I have to make do with a 400d for the time being :(

Unless you REALLY "need" video, better high Iso performance and more Mp then a 2nd hand Mk 1 might be your best friend.
I've just got hold of a mk1 and the FF image is just has that idefinable better IQ, for rufty tufty stuff though I think the 1D (Mk2) I have is a bit better. (sorry that was a bit off track)

i've had the 5DMKII for about 5 months now and I adore it, actually I adore them (see sig :p). I got my 17-40L 2nd hand off the forum last saturday and I haven't take it off since. Its just a sharp and versatile lens. I have been using it between 30mm-40mm for some lovely portraits.

Hope you get some good use out of it

Sorry for taking so long in replying as I've been working.
I meant fps but its never bothered me. If I need the faster fps, its the 1D3 every time.
For hand held shots I keep the 5D2 on Auto ISO, especially with my 100-400 and as you have noticed the IQ at higher ISOs are amazing.

Another vote for the 17-40L. I've never had focusing problems and I find it really sharp.
I did borrow a 16-35L which perhaps was better but costs approx twice the price.

Can everyone stop talking about how great their 5DII's are please?! There seem to be a few threads going at the moment, and given that mine should be in transit now it's making the wait unbearable :D

Its just a sharp and versatile lens.

It is isn't it. I like the fact that it goes from ultrawide to almost a "normal" focal length. Stick a filter on the front and you've got yourself a fully sealed, awesomely versatile, value for money general use lens.
