After much deliberation, I seem to have hit the Buy button on an IR imaging camera. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/dp/B008...&tagbase=abba-metro&tbId=\^$l?Fol\VT$1Coh8^]V

I've long been fascinated by non visible radiation and have been resisting the temptation for a year or 2 but have decided that shrouds have no pockets so I'm going to enjoy what I can while I can. Just hoping that this purchase will talk me out of upgrading my D700 - it does all I want and need but GAS is a hard mistress!!!

at least you'll be able to save some money on heating if you get all those heat leaks sorted...

Of course I'm aware of the incredible resolution and that it's more a technical tool than a photographic recorder! At some point I plan to get my old D70 converted to near visible IR but the FLIR camera is what I'm after at the moment.

As David points out, I may even save myself a few quid by finding any heat leaks from the house and might even offer my services to others, although that would be a little too like w**king for my tastes! I rather look forward to asking DG and insulation sellers where my leaks are and pointing out that they're guessing. Tyres, brake disks etc could be fun too.

If I needed a D800, I would have one but the D700 does all I need it to so I can wait until the D800's dropped to £1500 or so or get a D900 later this year!

Phew! Thank you! :D

Was very close to rent a Flir, when the pc was rebuilt - just to see, how well I managed the flow.
Unfortunately/luckily even the renting price for a day was too much for me!

But a nice, useful tool - you can use it for house examinations in your area. Perhaps earning the pounds back? :naughty:

Very interesting! Went out at crack of sparrow fart this morning and had a look at a few houses, some which I know have had their walls filled and some (like ours) which I know haven't. Almost no difference in external wall temperature despite our heating having been on for 30 minutes or so. Apparently uniform grey skies show surprising temperature graduations too!

Also did a check to see if it was worth double layering the floor insulation/underlay under the conservatory's laminate floor - not enough difference to make the B&Q trip worthwhile. We now know for certain why the cat likes sleeping in certain spots on the landing - they're the warmest, obviously over central heating pipes. Can also see where she's been kipping, although that's obvious at this time of year since she's shedding even more than usual!

Will post some thermosnaps when ICBA to do the card reading thing - it uses a micro SD card in a mini SD card adaptor and the micro to SD adaptor is upstairs (and I'm lazy!).
