Hi All,
Does anybody have any recommendations and suggestions for decent online book printing printing companies? I have used Blurb a couple of times but wondered if there were any places that I could get different layouts rather than the standard "square on" look that most seem to do. Basically I want to be able to position pictures where I want, at any angle on the page. I guess there are software limitations that make this difficult?
Is there anywhere that does this?

Thanks,
Phil.

You might rotate your images yourself before introducing them to page layout. Make sure your background colour is the same as the intended page colour before enlarging each canvas (oversize it), then rotate the image as you like, and re-crop as necessary to the appropriate rectangle. I don't know if that helps? It might interfere with text placement.

With Blurb (and maybe others) you can use a page layout program and save as pdf, rather than using their in-house book layout apps. That gives a lot more design scope, but of course you need to have the requisite software and jump through the right hoops with it.

Thanks Rog,
I was thinking of something a bit simpler :) I know there is a way of creating your own page layout in the print module in Lightroom but it's a pain. All I want is to be able to position my photos anywhere on the page instead of having everything in neat boxes in rows or stacks. Looking at the Blurb website it would seem I'm not the only one :)

i can fully recommend loxley colour

https://www.loxleycolour.com/photobook.aspx

not sure if this is what your after bu they do a range of stuff. print quality is always very good and turnaound is also pretty good. price wise ive heard people say they are on the high side but i find them quite reasonable for the quality.
you need to download their software to your pc but its all very straightforward.

Thanks guys, will check them out. Someone else recommended Albelli so am playing with that at the moment.

I've used AdoramaPix once and they did a great job. I liked the image quality better from AdoramaPix than from Blurb (prior to Blurb giving more paper choices), but I liked Blurbs book jackets/binding more. Now that Blurb has better paper selection than a few years ago I'm going to give them another shot to see how they compare.

To be fair I like Blurbs quality it's the rigidity of the format that I wanted to get away from. There are ways around it but it's a pain.

Hi Phil,

See my reply here http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/threads/photobooks.571117/#post-6635674

I have used Blurb and agree the quality was fine. As stated in my linked post I have now settled on Photoworld. With their software I can rotate photos and choose position on the page.

I have no connection with this company apart from being a satisfied customer.

Roy

Have a look at Bobs books. They have quite a few different layout options.
