Since taking up photography more seriously a couple of years ago I now find my MacBook Pro full.

I intend purchasing an external hard drive but I have just realised that I already pay for Amazon Prime that I believe gives me unlimited online storage and I have the 200gb cloud storage package through Apple

Anyone use these for additional storage when using Lightroom etc for editing or are they more geared up to mobile phone picture storage ?

Many thanks

Tony

I use Prime as an unconnected backup of all my images. Desktop HDD is main storage which copies off to a local network attached storage (NAS) OnFileChange so I have a live immediate backup. Monthly, I then drop everything into Amazon via drag & drop. My Amazon backup is not connected to my PC so encryption based viruses are avoided. The most I'll lose to a fire, theft of my office, or a crypto virus is a month which is fine for me as a hobbyist. A professional would probably require a more robust solution.

With Lightroom, if you "Save Metadata" (select image(s) then CTRL+S) you will create copies of the LR edits back in the original image files (embedded in jpges/dngs or sidecars in raw) which will then be wrapped in your normal backup process. Prime doesn't count sidecar files as "unlimited photographs" though so if you have a lot and/or use the non-free portion of Amazon Prime storage you may hit issues unless you shoot dng or jpeg.

We have Prime for other benefits, so the photo backup is a nice-to-have which is why I use it. If we didn't need prime I'd probably find another better fitting solution.

Dunno about Apple. :)

Many thanks for the response

Yes, we have Prime for films etc so having it as a photo back up is a bonus that I may as well use

I have over 350,000 images on Amazon Drive with Prime, I think it's brilliant and very easy to use :)

I have Zenfolio with unlimited storage so I use that

Quick question regarding prime, do raw files come under the photo banner or is it exclusively jpegs?

Both Raw & Jpeg are allowed

I use Apple - one of the good things about is it that for the 6.99 a month I pay, that gives me 2TB of storage that I can share with my other family members; So they can use it for backup too - not just for their photos, but device backups etc and the like. So in that respect, 6.99 isn’t bad value. It syncs with Photos and stores both the original RAW and JPEG version “up there”

Was considering canceling, but overall not too bad so going to keep in the meantime I think. Worth a look definitely.

Could you give me a quick run down of how you do it ?

I have plenty of Apple storage freest the moment.

I have plenty free on Amazon Prime too BUT not 100% certain I will renew again as I really use Netflix a lot more.

That's fine but I'm a windows user so no good to me. It works out just short of £84 per year for 2TB, Amazon is £55 per year for unlimited files, photos & videos if you're not a Prime member. You can also share with family members.

Just saying :)

Certainly, in terms of sharing you have to log into your iCloud bit on either your mac or iOS device and then you can “add” the family member from within there? This link might explain it a little bit better than I will!

Ahh That is a fair point - I just assumed (dangerous I know - you know what thought did - followed the dust cart and assumed it was full of goodies but it wasn’t! :P )

Interesting insight re Prime as in effect free offisite backup when you have the other Prime viewing benfits..........................food for thought, for sure???
