O.K Here we go, Following on from Dave ,(MD), I have decided to do my own 52 Portraits project. I was going to join in with the themed 52 but I have never been very good with thinking of original images to take for each theme.

As I have mentioned to a couple of other members already I have been in a very deep rut of late and I'm finding it very hard to motivate myself to even pick the camera up let alone take a photo so this is my attempt to get my mojo back..

Now I am aware it's technically the second week already but I have been very busy with my youngest son's birthday..:) I am however going to post two portraits and name them Week 1 and 2.

My two boys are going to feature heavily in this project for a number of reasons 1. I know how to bribe them to pose and let me take pictures.. 2. because they are easy targets but mostly 3. They are the reason I bought a decent camera two years ago and they have been my go to inspiration from the very start..

I fully intend however to get outside my comfort zone and photograph some adults!!! Children I can get on the same wavelength as and have fun. But adults well thats a whole different ball game.:cuckoo::D

Anyway here we go:

These are stunningly good images. The B+W works brilliantly. Beautifully exposed.
I feel the focus is slightly out on the image of Joseph.

Cheers, Patrick

Yeah you are right! or partially anyway. the focus is spot on...on one eye.. infact it's slightly out on both images. one of the pitfalls of using 85 f1.2 wide open. I perhaps should of stopped the lens down a touch but I have not used it lately and just felt like trying my luck...:bonk:

Thanks for the compliment and taking the time to comment..

Loving these matey and the b+w tilt.. " I seem to be in b+w rutt myself at the moment and I am loving it.."

Dave:thumbs:

Cheers for the comments mate but Why the t-shirt?

Matt,

Second shot is excellent. (not to say the 1st one isn't good) Am I right in presuming you have done some PP on his eyes? If it wasn'f for the texture of the wall, this could be a shot of Thomas lying on the floor but the shot rotated.

The B&W is stunning.

What lens did you use, I take it aperture is around 1.8ish as his far shoulder is out of focus?

Dunno really matey  .. Sorry. Like I say I like the shot though.

Thanks alot for taking the time to comment. The eyes have been edited yes. The whites were brightened a touch and as he has blue eyes I can simply decrease the colour temp of the original to really lighten and bring out the eyes. I love B&W and I spend quite a bit of time getting it just how I like it I don't use any pre-sets as every image is different and IMHO requires different handling.

The lens was the 85mm at f1.2, I had to stand back a few steps just to get both eyes in focus and I believe The farthest one is still just out..:bonk:

Don't be sorry mate, I value your opinion. I was mearly curious as to why is all.

Have you got anything in mind for week 3??? I'm struggling to find someone! I don't want it to be family as I want to remove myself from my comfort zone..;)

the 2nd image is really stunning :) the composition really works well as does the processing and lighting

Thankyou very much ;)

What he said. Lovely image. You have a couple of excellent models there.

Again thanks for taking the time to comment.

Now that's a cracker...

Great use of the empty space. Great clarity, contract, dof and very sharp.

B&W works a treat.

Was he lying down for the photograph?

Cheers.

Cheers, B&W is my favourite medium, he was in fact standing the texture behind his head is my wall paper.

OK, the plans for my third portrait went belly up! I had arranged a shoot with a friend and he let me down!! So once again an image Thomas will act as stand in. Kids aye what would we do without them...

Please do let me know what you think.. Good or bad..

These make me cry with envy. What beautiful portraits. You just need to crack getting the eye focus. Please keep going - would love to see more with different subjects.

Yeah the focus again, unfortunately f1.2 is very addictive. Also sometimes an image speaks to you even though it's not perfect technically.. And I fully intend on keeping this up, for my own motivation if nothing else. Next image will be of a different person I'm determined. Hopefully won't be let down this time..

Just looked again at your photographs and still amazed....would you care to share your post processing?
Thanks.

Certainly, I usually have an idea of how I want an image to look so try to get it right in camera as possible but it never quite looks right. I then use LR3 get it closer to what I had in mind.

I don't use any pre-sets, actions or plugins on my portraits, instead I generally remove any small distractions with the heal tool then darken or lighten the background to remove any distracting bits. Then I use the adjustment brush with a feathered edge and low flow to make both the eyes look equally exposed, so only brighten the darker of the two! I then play with the exposure, fill light and brightness sliders to give the desired look this is what takes the longest time. Last I add contrast to suit and give it a sharpen.

Hope that helps..
