One Week, and Anything Goes….. Or Photography, My Art – Week 6

The idea of this challenge is to not only test your technical ability and your ability to ‘see a picture’, but also to develop your imagination in creating a piece of artwork, and to encourage lateral thinking. Please note, that a straight picture can be just as pleasing artistically as a highly manipulated one, so this challenge should be open to straight and manipulated images, and judged on their artistic merit

1. As I'm late starting this challenge, I have decided that we will extend the time scale of this challenge for this one. Challenge begins immediately after this posting. The challenge will run for the rest of this week, and the week following, ending at 9:00pm on Sunday Night (16th August) Judging to begin straight after, and be posted Sunday before midnight. The new subject for challenge 7 to be posted some time on the Monday.
2. Entries should be new images, and not ones that have previously been seen on TP (Unless the image has been significantly altered in some way by PP which makes it a new image.)
3. Any and all photographic technique at your disposal is allowable to create your image. Judging should be based on the final image, regardless of the technicalities of how the image was created.
4. Images can be posted at any time during the week up until a cut off time determined by the judge on Sunday evening.
5. Winner to choose a title for the next challenge and judge it at the end of their week.
6. Titles and Subjects can be interpreted however the photographer sees fit, thinking both inside and outside the box should be encouraged. (If you feel that your image could be misinterpreted as not being relevant, a short accompanying explanation note is permissible/encouraged.)

Ah - well, you're in luck, aren't you... I decided that this would be a 2 week challenge - we were a bit late starting, and I just thought it'd make more sense to give people a bit more time, rather than less, at this time of the year - what with it being holiday season and all that!

Finishes 9pm on the 16th...

 Gives me some time to think of an idea for the POTY08 - blimmin "Minerals and Metals" - I swore i'd get an entry in every month, but this one's just doing my nut in! :bang: One week in and I haven't got the slightest idea (not even one that is out of my ability to take!)

Assume I can post pic on this thread as bit unsure about 52. This picture was taken today trying out new Canon 70-200 L F4 lens. Considerably sharper than any other lenses I have, although may not show it in this photo as was taken F4 250sec. Was passing a river and noticed a "ladder Frame" out of the water. Colours, different patterns along with lines I thought made this image interesting. Very minimum process in photoshop. Back to the zoo tomorrow

Graham004 - you're more than welcome to post on here, whenever you wish - it's not a structured thing - dip in when you want, or if the challenge really appeals, miss out if you can't get out 'togging that week, or if the subject leaves you cold. No catching up if you "miss a week" needed - just a friendly challenge to yourself to go out and take a photo that fits a particular topic. No prizes, other than bragging rights, and the chance to set and judge the following weeks topic. It's normally a 1 week challenge, though occasionally, usually to take in bank holidays, or like last week, for over-run's of prior challenge, we'll extend it.

So - Welcome Aboard

This is a bit of lateral thinking but the picture was taken on a window frame. The initial photo was a bit boring so added some effects. As this is of a bees mating I am unsure if this material is of a mature nature

Couple from me. This was a great challenge to think of ideas I would not have normally thought of.

#1
This lady was hanging out of her window watching the Fringe festival on The Royal Mile in Edinburgh.
I am not sure if she is clothed or not!

I may well be too late for this week - I can accept that.

It's been busy, and as I celebraated my 42nd birthday on Sunday I'm entitled to class myself as OLD now.

Anyway - here's my FRAMED shot.

...snip...

Just as well I'd decided to let this one run for a fortnight, now isn't it...

Having said that - I know I'd said closing on sunday night(16th), but i've been dragooned into going to see a mates band sunday night, so either we can close saturday night instead, or run entries up to 9am monday morning(17th) , and i'll sort judging by Noon same day. How does everyone feel about this - I know some people only get to shoot weekends, and don't want to take half their time away, so i'm tending to closing monday tbh (despite it requiring me to to judge photo's whilst still suffering from a surfit of :beer::beer:)

That should give me time to tidy it up a bit. I'm happy with the idea, but it's a bit rushed, so I'd ike to try and make a neater job of it.

I'm happy with whichever date you choose.

I chose a classic interpretation for "Framed".
Laus Deo, "Praise Be to God" from a local church doorway.

Right everyone - i've decided that we're going to close this challenge tonight at Midnight. I'll get online at a reasonable time tomorrow AM, and come up with the results by noon tomorrow (17/08/09). Some interesting shots already, look forward to seeing any more that are posted.

Everyone - as you've all gone out and rose to the challenge in spectacular fashion :)

Liked the funky angles of the frames, and just the fact that it was a "fun" picture...

Which means that our winner this time is....

(drumroll.....)

:1st: TurnipFarmer with

(resized to fit the forum limits ;))

Really liked this one - a great subject and really nicely exposed - managed to keep the details in the set of window lights behind the initial frame. I really am a sucker for a nice black and white image.

Honourable mentions go to

Graham004 - liked the Ladder frame - nice lines and textures - wasn't too keen on the Bee Pron shot myself.

Cannockwolf - lovely image, though I'm not sure that there's been a fall of snow in the last 2 weeks, even in the Cannock Alps

KiwiJaz - liked the woman peering out of the window - made me want to look down out of bottom frame, to see what she was looking at. Church Door was excellent bit of "seeing the image" though maybe if you'd have changed the angle a wee bit and included the top of the door in the circle and lost some of the pavement?

ford1 - of course we'll allow that image - definitely fit the "timber frame" motif, as far as i'm concerned. Lovely image of what looks like a swing-bridge. I wonder, does it still rotate? the mechanism looks a bit rusty.

bigsteve - another really nicely exposed black and white - as I said above, i'm a real sucker for black and white images at the moment, and this fits the bill nicely. I just thought that the framing left to right was a wee bit tight, and it cut off a little bit too much of the archwork which was providing the frame...

and to everyone else - congratulations - there really were no poor images in my opinion.

So - its over to TurnipFarmer for the next challenge.

Well done TurnipFarmer and everyone else!
I look forward to the next challenge. :)

Me to, to be honest - i've kinda missed thinking something up for last couple of weeks. Wish I could say that it's given me time to work on my POTY competition shot for August but i've really drawn a blank on Metals and Minerals.

Many thanks for my placing :D and well done to everyone for loads of high quality entries

Hey Guys, sorry its taken a while to get back

Thanks for my placing in this comp, came as a nice surprise :D and well done to everybody else, some really good photos there.

So all you need to do now is post a new topic with your challenge for the next few days ahead... feel free to use the first post of this thread as a template and change the closing dates etc as needed.:)

Well Done TurnipFarmer, on a lovely image - congratulations. Fantastic symmetry there, and the high contrast works really well.

Well done also to all the other entries.

Thanks for the placing Big Yin. I quite like this idea, and might try to do a better version of it some time as a fun portrait to put up somewhere. Better background, nicer frames, and better PP - should make it an aceptible shot. I think this one really comes across as a concept shot, rather than a finsihed product.

thanks again.

Jerry

I certainly reckon it's a bit beyond "proof of concept" Jerry... Am i correct in assuming you PS'ed the images into the frames - i've done something similar, but with an actual print, then holding it in place so that it exactly replaced the bit it was covering - was one of my photo-365 self portraits from a few months ago. took something like 100 shots, shooting tethered with the 450d and sitting posing / moving the photo around until it fit seamlessly.

thanks for the compliment.

Yes, it was done in Photoshop. 3 basic shots. son holding 2 frames, with no pictures in. then close ups of eyes and mouth. Magic wand used to select frame interior of both frames - new layer, and seleted area filled with plain colour. 2 other elements pasted on and selection inverted, so that everything outside of those frame insides was cleaned off using the eraser.

usual adjustments to hue and contrast, then finally flattened.

I'm going to try it again using a better back-drop, and instead of having a frame with just a plain hardboard back and glass, will probably put in a piece of coloured cloth to ensure the most evenly coloured / lit frame interior as possible.

The biggest problem area is around the fingers, where shadows made it difficult for the magic wand to work neatly.

Use a couple of sheets of bright green paper - like they do for Chromakey effects in video.
