The idea of this challenge is to not only test your technical ability and your ability to ‘see a picture’, but also to develop your imagination in creating a piece of artwork, and to encourage lateral thinking. Please note, that a straight picture can be just as pleasing artistically as a highly manipulated one, so this challenge should be open to straight and manipulated images, and judged on their artistic merit

1. You have exactly 1 week to come up with an idea, photograph it and submit it. Start date Monday – Judging to be some time between Sunday Night and Monday morning. Then the new subject to be posted some time on the Monday.
2. Entries should be new images (taken within the time frame of the competition), and not ones that have previously been seen on TP (Unless the image has been significantly altered in some way by PP which makes it a new image.)
3. Any and all photographic technique at your disposal is allowable to create your image. Judging should be based on the final image, regardless of the technicalities of how the image was created.
4. Images can be posted at any time during the week up until a cut off time determined by the judge on Sunday evening.
5. Winner to choose a title for the next challenge and judge it at the end of their week.
6. Titles and Subjects can be interpreted however the photographer sees fit, thinking both inside and outside the box should be encouraged. (If you feel that your image could be misinterpreted as not being relevant, a short accompanying explanation note is permissible/encouraged.)

This Weeks Challenge

MOTION (hope this is ok as been a topic on the 'days ahead' thread list - can change if needed)

What it says - there should be lots of scope for different ideas: movement or motion blur with people, vehicles, water, animals etc.. low light trails etc. etc. etc. Let's see what you can come up with.

Jump in as soon as you like - cut off time 8pm (BST) on Sunday 11 October. Judging to take place some time Sunday night, with result posted asap after.

thought it would have been a good theme? :|

dont get downhearted, people are out there snapping away as we speak :]

I couldn't think of anything feasible in my limited spare time, until I noticed this spider on the shed door.

spinning spider

I used a close-up 'filter' on my 70-300, with off-camera flash (held in one hand) though the exif doesn't show it.

I don't normally bother with PP stuff like this, but since it is allowed here I found it rather fun to have a go.

Here's my attempt... not exactly with motion blur but they are running flat out. This is from the Tortugas Open in Buenos Aires, and the guy in the middle is the best polo player in the world. Thanks for the comp!

thanks for the entries guys... now, know I cant vote for myself.. but this is my 1st attempt at capturing light trails..

Great first attempt at night trails Mich...

And here's my first attempt at this competition...

Bit noisy... :suspect: ...but then I was standing right beside the track... :naughty:

:p

I know its late but because there were not many entries I thought I would pop it in

Thought I was gonna have no one to pick from at one point.. thanks all :)

My winner is.....

Tracer and the Spinning Spider - love this, the sharp body and the legs going like the clappers weaving its web :)

I wont pick places but mentions for all...

TheBigYin - great motion.. so fast but the bike frame nice and sharp.. striking blue colour works well agains the grey tones

polochick - nicely captured, caught the intent look on the players faces really well and great DOF

Venomator - that certainly is motion blur.. my OH would have picked that, he's a big train geek :)

rhonddaboy - thats fabulous.. love the blurred background, gives a definate feel of speed (hope you dont mind but have chosen from the others, best keep to the time limit specified)

I'm not great at giving techy critique.. as i'm sure you've noticed.. but went with what I liked :)

thanks all

Thanks for the quick turn-around and results post Mich...

And congratulations to Tracer...

Commiserations to the rest of us... :D

Thanks for the kind comments too Mich... ;) ...next time let your OH judge please... :suspect:

:p

Thats ok Mich I knew it was to late just put it in to make up numbers.

Thanks for the mention Mitch - as you say, it's a really striking blue on that frame. Don't know about the speed though - seem to remember wobbling along around 5 mph with the camera in one hand and the handlebar in the other. It's a bit like those car rig shots where the car looks like it's hooning around a circuit, but it's actually being pushed by someone out of shot

Many thanks - glad you liked the spider. I really like rhonddaboy's rally car - shame it was just a fraction late. Would have saved me choosing a new subject! :D

I'm glad to hear you were going slowly - my first thought was that it looked really dangerous!

 that bikes a pretty much full-blown racing one - it's actually a darned site more stable at 20-30mph than at 5mph.

Maybe, but the person you ran into at speed because you weren't looking where you were going might think differently! :p
