An epiphany maybe, or that moment that finally restores your faith in humanity.
To what do I refer? Well the gas/electricity man came and took my readings a few weeks ago.
About a week later I get the power company letter on my mat. With trembling hands and brow dripping sweat I open it, expecting the worse after the hottest summer for years.
After reading the missive twice, yes its true there is no line saying "Based on your projected use and meter readings we have raised your direct debit to (£30 more than it was before)."

I think I was only unconscious for a few minutes though.

What's the betting if you went leccy free for three months, and then they read the meter, they'd STILL raise the DD!!
 
I got the opposite one a few months back - they reduced my gas DD to a third of its previous level!
 
I don't give them the chance. I insist on paying by cheque every quarter rather than by DD despite the fact that there's a surcharge.
 
I was #£100 in credit on both the gas and the leccy.. they wanted to put £10 on each bill..
I told them where to go.
 
I've just had my yearly review after bitching about the meter readings,
in another thread, HERE

To my astonishment, the elec. has gone up £2,
(But actually that shouldn't surprise me having been running a pond pump half the summer)

The Gas was the real shocker though, it went down a tenner!
 
Been happy with British Gas. I simply use the iPhone app to log meter readings each month. Elec is normally ok paying same amount each month, bit with gas I am probably £200 or so in credit there, but know that come April will probably be £200 in debt so it evens itself out and I prefer paying the same each month.
 
Everyone on the budget scheme should be getting reduced payments due to the exceptionally mild Winter.

*Should* be yes. I expect the reality is somewhat different for the vast majority.
 
Seriously?

Well for one Ive just had my bill through and surprise surprise there's no reduction even with the mild winter. I feel sure I will not be alone.

Dear Mr Dorset Dude

You may be aware of a letter we sent you. this letter stated your Direct Debit will not be changing...in fact we did not say it wouldn't we just didn't say anything. However Now we have made a revue of your account we find that due to the unseasonably warm summer we project a terrible winter in this event you gas and leccy will be in mahoosive deficit and so we are upping you dd to a sweet tonne per month, nice one!

Yours rubbing hands together and hoping for a mini ice age

Likewise. Whatever the actual bill, the direct debit was always increasing. Now I won't let their fingers anywhere near the till

Must admit, next time I change suppliers I will be doing this I think. Open an extra saving account called GasElec, pay into that £90 a month and then pay the quarterly bills from that.
Annoying that you then dont get the direct debit discount though.

dear DD ,due to the governments attitude towards russia and its involvement in the ukraine ,you will be charged a supplement of £1000 per quarter in case the ruskies decide to cut us off from there cheap gas ,as you know any that the u.k does produce gets sold to the poor underprivileged bulgarians first so they don't freeze and can continue to live in the manner to which we are accustomed to ,any further problems please re-open your chimney breast and burn your furniture .

I was paying £147/month combined, a few months back they repaid the £165 I was in credit and reduced the DD to £111. They then sent someone around to inspect the meters to make sure they hadn't been tampered with.
 
My power bills are always remarkably small, and I have recently (Last 6 months) switched from bill to DD.
Thanks to the chunky reduction in kw/hr rate for doing so, my costs combined are slightly less than 75 quid a month :-)
 
my heating, cooking, and hot water is all off Bernie , who is oil fired ... I was a bit worried about it when we moved in but he's been massively cheaper than gas or electric - we refilled the tank in the height of summer when heating oil is at its cheapest , and because I live on a farm and my landlord has a bunch of bernies and agas in the other houses plus oil fired heating in the dairy he negotiates a bulk buy for all the tanks at once , and we got sub 40p/litre :banana: one tank will see us through to next summer.

our supplementary heating is a log burner and I get the logs free from work

and our lecktrickery which is basically only lighting and the washing machine, fridge and freezer works out at about £25 a quarter.

You'd think so, but they've looked out the window and seen that the holly berries are already red and that means a harsh winter, so they thought they'd be better increasing your monthly payment! :rolleyes:
