Not quite as dramatic as the title suggests i'm afraid.. In the next couple of months I will be looking to purchase a portable/small studio head that can be used in the studio off mains and in the field from a pack.. But I will need it to cover every eventuality so need as much power as possible for over powering the sun if need be!!..

So head and pack/battery plus a large octa or parabolic umbrella not sure which yet.. portability is of paramount importance.. All for in the reagon of 1500?? Suggestions..

Matt

I'm looking at doing it for 8 ish using either a 600ws elemental head or a 1000ws elemental head on an xplorer pack with a dish

I am also considering safari kit, with a pack one head and dish

for that money I'm guessing you want something branded

either quadra / ranger or acute 600B .... all tried and tested

If "portability is of paramount importance" - Elinchrom Quadra is no brainer! ;-)

You can have the set for less than £1000 + VAT
...and they just introduced new version RX !!

Not the Quadra surely, because the OP says that he needs to overpower the sun and the Quadra doesn't have enough power for that.
That leaves the Elinchrom Ranger, the Lencarta Safari and some of the Profoto models basically

What spec or more importantly w/s do the new quadra's have??? I love the quadra system for sheer portability but fear the 400w/s will leave me short in certain circumstances.. : ( Now if they did a 800w/s version then I think a lot of manufacturers would sit up and listen..

Would I get a prophoto set-up within budget?? I thought they were top draw! is the accute 600B the tiny model similar to the quadra in some respects??

I have been looking at the safari for a while now and wonder whether they would be upto the job w/s wise and durability?? It would of course mean I would have some change left over though..

Garry you trying to compare - Ranger RX AS with ... Safari....

(talking just about power output and putting aside Chinese quality of Safari)
You trying to say that 600WS is closer to 1100WS than 400WS to 600WS...

You are right if “overpowering the sun” in that case means shooting into direct sun or having the sun behind camera and subject being fully exposed.

But If you can keep your subject in the shadow or under white scrim or something – Quadra will work like charm in very bright day !!

Portability – Quality – all in one.

Check out ZackA. photo in open sun with Quadra in this article: http://www.zarias.com/where-hot-shoe-flashes-dare-not-go/

If you are on the budget, then I suggest to buy Paul C Buff - Einsten 640WS + VII battery for just £700– heavier then Safari but with great new features and technology – now from UK dealer !
And you can run Einstein directly from a wall socket - because it is a monolight - not like Pack&Head safari system.

I have never been left wanting with my quadra one head, even via 60" umbrellas. PLMs and their copies are apparently very efficient on size, and when Viewfinder get their ARSES IN GEAR and import 7mm I'll get one.

How powerful/portable do you want it to be?

If power is more important than portability, go for a ranger 1100.

There is no one perfect system, everything is a compromise. One day I might end up with both.

I think Profoto have a new lithium battery coming out, which is lighter than old, but still doesnt compare to a Eli quadra (I think). Go down to your local Calumet dealer and see it for yourself.
