im doing a life-style session for a family reunion soon at a really pretty venue (indoor) during a formal dinner...and was just thinking what am i going to use for lighting?- as I would have thought it would look a bit silly and people would get annoyed if I had one of my speedlites in a softbox across the room, and an onboard flash...but then the onboard flash (to me) would seem even more annoying, especially at dinner! I have an onboard flash softbox, but lets just say it sux (lol) always is falling off from the velcro :D....
so then next thought was maybe just the hotshoe softbox across the room, and that's it, along with the natural in-room lighting (hope there's enough!)....any thoughts on whats best so's not to upset the client??! thanxxx

Ive done quite a bit of this sort of stuff at theatre restaurants, corporate do's etc, going round tables and pimping photos. I think you'll find the onboard flash not powerful enough, and being so close to the lens axis (lower) you still run the risk of of red eye.

I'd opt for a camera mounted speedlight personally for the portability and ability to move around unfettered, but with a diffuser unless you have a good bounce flash situation.

The big softbox is OK if all the activity is going to be at one place - presentations for example.
