My Photoshop subscription is about to expire.

Rather than investing another £120 on that a friend recommended one photo as an alternative

Anyone have any thoughts on this editing suite. Cheap enough at £62.70

Just a thought.......

I think On1 has a trial, as does Affinity Photo and DxO PhotoLab4

Perhaps trial all of them and see what you think???

Hi, been a user for many years of On1 products and still struggle with some of it, not an easy learning curve IMO however it does all you need for images. The one thing to mind is you have to pay every year for the next version update. They have a lot of videos out there and a trial version. Another thing to watch out for is the what I would call sneaky way they are treating there customers, customers like myself who have been with them for some time, for example at the moment they are plugging a new software On1 No Noise AI as a stand alone product and it can be used as stand alone however from what I have read it will be included in the new 2022 update version of On1 photo RAW releasing sometime in Autumn but they keep sending emails promoting it to already customers and owners of the main software to buy it as stand alone and personally I think that is wrong. Russ.
 
I like their software, and will likely switch from Lightroom in the next 12 months. The import tool for your LR catalogue sounds promising but I've not tried it yet.

It is very much like LR but not quite the same, and therefore can feel awkward because of this. It also does a lot more in editing terms.
 
I did a trial of On1 a while back but couldn't get on with it.
When I switched to Mac I had to find an alternative to my Photoshop CS6 and eventually settled on DXO Photolab 4 plus Affinity Photo and they work fine for my needs.
 
Thank you guy's. I do love Photoshop had it for many years.

I may try a few of those mentioned that have a free trial. I'm guessing there uis no real substitute for full on Photoshop 2021.

I may have to stick with that. The recent MS update really doesn't get on with Photoshop on my PC. I will be uninstallimg that update tomorrow morning

I've been using On1 Photo Raw since it was called Perfect Photo Suite 4 and it does everything I need, except for freeform perspective distortion, for which I use Snapseed. I used Lightroom up to version 4 but switched as PPS4 did what it did better than Lightroom could, And when Photo Raw was released it had more features than Lightroom, and was just as easy to use.

However, Photo Raw isn't an alternative to Photoshop, it's (obviously) an alternative to Lightroom, The best PS alternative I know of is Affinity Photo, and it doesn't work in quite the same way as PS, so it could be a steep learning curve. A better alternative is Gimp, which is, I believe, almost as old as Photoshop.

I trialled it and really liked it.

TBH I think at the price it is unrivalled.

It doesn't do catalogues - and saves in sidecars. For me this is infinitely preferable. Simply copy raw plus side car to your other drive, done. No faff. Love it.

I chose DXO photolab 4 - I found the results a little cleaner with the 645z (rare camera so on1 will be better on the more main stream) and I found ON1 had a lot of stuff I don't use and laid out what I do use in a less intuitive way (why is curves hidden as an affect when it is the fundimental tool to set black/white points and tonal values). I actually don't use sliders, I do it all in curves and found DXO better for this, if not perfect.

What about APhoto you hated Lez, I have it and apart from the tool that removes stuff I don’t use it,for raw develop I find it poor but never really do any pixel editing but as I have LR/PS plan I was thinking of learning a bit of PS,but to be honest I don’t really know what I should be doing with pixel editing once I’ve done the raw stuff in LR,I must be easy to please as I don’t know what else to do to the image to improve it lol.

I usually shoot RAW so need a fast reliable editing suite to do just that :)

Just removed Photoshop form my PC too

I'd say in this order

DXO PL4, On1 RAW then C1pro.

C1pro is actually amazing but it's expensive and quite complex in it's layout. I found DXO and On1 RAW more user friendly.

Be curious which one you pick out of DXO and On1. They're both good but very different in approach.

My thinking therefore is that I could re-install my legit copy of 5.7 (64-bit) for as far into the future as it will run on Windows? (It does support my cameras ...)

I have just downloaded the free trial of the DXO and that looks promising enough

5.7 will install multiple times for as long as the hardware and os will support it. There's little real difference between LR 5 and 6 so you lose very little.
 
I really like LR, and with various promotions and deals I find that I am covered to mid-2023 for a total of about £100. However, I have also trialled DxO PL4, just in case, and I found it very good. Couldn't get on with On-1; C1 was very good but not as intuitive (for me).

I feel about the same.

There's a considerable learning curve in adopting a new app, which for me is coupled with hesitation that the effort might be all in vain if I end up not liking the app anyway. But I keep all my raws, and a biggish issue is keeping the ability to revisit previous edits and re-address them if wanted, without reverting to scratch.

Thus I'd quite like to keep a version of LR up & running in connection with my archive, even if I have to relinquish the V6.14 that I've been using to date. As Toni says, there's not much in it. But I wonder if I can revert the catalogue, or have I blown it?

Going forward, and with the capability for later cameras, I'm also nearly up to speed with DxO PL4 - but I'm hoping to use its database alone as a record since I hate the clutter of sidecars. I will of course attempt to back it up ...

If you don't have it, it's worth getting the final 5.7.1 installer while you still can (they'll switch off updates from within the program at some point):

I suppose LR5 is one of the few commercial raw processors that doesn't need online activation, and can therefore continue to be installed indefinitely. ON1, DxO and C1 (even the free Express versions) all need to be activated, so you are at the mercy of their servers. The Affinity suite doesn't need online activation, but they don't have a LR alternative.
 
I have On1 2018 and 2019. I havent used it for quite a while but prefered 2018 for some elements and 2019 for others. At the time I was attending a camera club and 2018 would allow you to create canvas so that you could backfill any parts of the image with black if your crop was smaller than the 1600x1200 format required. 2019 removed this.

I also found that i would need to make lots of adjustments to edit a basic image. I currently use Capture One and find that often all thats needed is a slight tweek to 4 sliders and i have a basic image. Naturally I now have a better skill set so play about with other tools but still find it easier to use. I also have Affinity to do those photoshop things

You should be able too - just turn off in preferences the writing to sidecars. Personally I don't see the issue with them and it's a pretty bullet proof solution.

DXO seemed the easier to learn of the lot, ON1 good but the tools I like were hidden away and I couldn't find a way to put the tools I do use in a pre-arranged layout, like you can with DXO.
