On1 Effects 10 now free

Is this usable as a plugin for Photoshop?

Not tried it properly yet but it's another bunch of adjustable presets - doesn't look as good as Nik but still could be useful.
Probably another email harvesting ploy.

I have the on1 photo suite and have a love hate relationship. There are a couple of things it does well, but it's slow and as soon as I apply a few effects it crashes. We were promised a big improvement over v9 which was awful at crashing every 5 minutes, but I don't find it much better.

There was huge fanfare about the release of v10 but all it really was, was a UI change. I won't be upgrading to v11.

Nik is my go to plugin now, I just hope this is not left to die out now it's free.

Oh yes, you will get a never ending stream of emails from them trying to flog you the full package.

Just give a fake email address.

As often as not, once you have given an address, the download starts without needing to have received an email. Probably not playing the game, but if I decide I want the full package I'll buy it without a multitude of emails exhorting me to.

You need a real email address as they will email you the download link.

Mine downloaded without a link too - they also did email me a link but I used my 'spare' account that is reserved just for this sort of thing - anything that looks like I might get loads of spam, I give them this address;)

Which you should be able to unsubscribe from.
I actually bought their software and it took me 4 or 5 attempts using their unsubscribe link and eventually a very cross email to make them stop sending me emails.

I unsubscribed a couple of my email addresses from them and emails stopped for a while, then restarted. :p

Thanks for the link.

Any one who has used this and nik collection, what does this offer in addition to nik collection?

Thanks

Been using the photo suite since version 7, having downloaded PE 6 free to begin with.

It's just different, not necessarily better, but different. The USP tools here are the dynamic contrast, masking controls and the ability to add background layers as textures behind images, although there's a lot more than that I find useful. If you have Photoshop then you probably have no need for PE (or Nik) other than speed of applying presets and filters, but if you have Lightroom + Nik then the tools here will be useful. BIG advantage over Nik is that images can be saved as .PSD files with non-destructive changes, then taken back into perfect effects and each individual effect layer re-worked. The biggest danger with PE is overcooking the final image because each iteration looks good.

It's well worth the price of entry if you ever do more than just tweak luminance noise and set B&W points in post.

Hi Thanks for the link.
I downloaded and it apears as a plugin, photoshop cs6. If I run the plugin it opens lets me choose an effect it then runs the effect at the default setting applies it to the image and then closes leaving me back in cs6 with the effects applied but no time to faff with the settings.I can run the program as a stand alone ok but I would prefer to use it in photoshop. Am I missing something, can someone help please ?

Is there any 'edit in' setting in CS6 - in LR I usually select File>edit in>perfect effects. There are lots of helpful vids on the On1 site that can probably answer your question too.

Cheers Toni. You can find it under file ab sub menu automate. Would never have found that. Thanks very much.
Another thing is this free for a short time period?

Should be permanent. Be warned though, it's a useful bit of software to have, and I ended up buying the suite: effects and layers are the 2 best programs, the portrait software is OK, ditto the lighroom equivalent (but not as good as LR) and perfect browse is a bit crap TBH. Worth it overall.

Thanks for the info.So they are giving us the effects part away if you then like it you can then buy the layers or the other programs ?

That's right. TBH the individual programs aren't good value if you just buy one - much better to get the lot. One I forgot to mention was the printing module that lets you output with wrap borders for canvas, upscale and sharpen at full size and a bunch of other stuff. Nothing essential there that isn't available in, say, GIMP and LR, but quick & easy to use.

I've been playing with On1 Effects today and I am rather impressed (I am using it as a stand a lone program). I was surprised to find it works on RAW files, obviating the need for using a RAW converter for those files I always intended to be monochrome.

Well you seem well impressed with it. I use photoshop and Canon dpp for the raw. I generaly keep my photos looking like photos if you know what I mean but I may have a play and see if I can change my ways.

Like I said before, the big danger is over-cooking, but it doesn't have to be like that, and the effects can be tasteful and even subtle. I posted a coupel of examples in Kodiak's PP thread.

Never saw that thread. Your second image on there would be my pref.

That's entirely reasonable. It was a case of trying different things in order to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, and a slightly non-photographic approach was one of the options that I tried for the first version.

Great and thanks for the heads-up, can somebody please let me know as soon as TOPAZ becomes free.
