On ya bike - derailleur help needed

So, with too much time on my hands, I decided to clean my bike up, along with a few repairs.

Any way, with the bike up turned, I was cleaning around the bottom bracket and the front derailleur area, when this spring popped out (see image). No idea from where though and I cannot seem to find a picture on the orical of knowledge.

The mechanism is a Shimano deore, on a 2007 frame.

Any ideas anyone.

From an engineering and curiosity point of view, does this double spring clip perform a linking/pivoting or a pin locking function? Yes, lockdown has given me the time to think and ask such questions! :)

I believe its just to lock the pins, can't recall it being needed for any return type function
