On tripod = VR off

Now, I switch my VR off for longer exposures, but just watched CreativeLIVE and the presenter said when using a tripod always switch the VR off.

Did a bit of research and most say it should he turned off, because the tripod likes to 'fight' with the VR.

If this is correct...I never knew that.

Yeah that is correct.

On the tripod there should be no movement in the camera, and from what I know, the IS or VR mechanism can actually cause vibrations as it is trying to compensate for movement that is not there :thumbs:

When you say you turn off the VR for longer exposures, that is on the tripod right? On shorter exposures, on a tripod, I suppose the problem would be less obvious / as much of a problem.
 
Like he said though, don't forget to turn it back on when you take it off the Tripod to handhold again. ;)
 
I once got very frustrated when my tripod head kept slipping down causing motion blur when I took my shot with a longish exposure because I couldn't work out how it kept slipping when I had it locked and tightened - then I realised that I had left IS (VR) on - switched IS off and problem solved :bonk:
 
The more modern Canon lenses (70-200 etc) sense when they are on a tripod and switch the image stabilization off, however my 100-400 doesn't so I get into the habit of manually switching it off for all of them to save remembering which one is which.
 
especially so if you are trying to make a stop motion capture, leave vr on and wonder why the picture is jumping around!

I always switch off VR when using tripod:)

Then forget to switch it back on after:(

Think I read somewhere to always switch off - maybe the manual.

Me too, I forget to switch back on. My camera is supposed to detect if is on a tripod or not. I assume it has an accelerometer or electronic gyroscope inside, but haven't managed to find more info on this.
 
Always off when on my tripod.

I guess it depends on what your doing with the monopod I guess :thinking: but that said I've never used one so you may as well not listen to me, but it's supposed to make you more stable so I would suggest you shouldn't need it :thinking:

Creativelive, if you haven't found out for yourself already, is a website which broadcast live one day, or multi day courses on Photography and Digital imaging. They are free to watch, but you can also buy the videos of the courses as downloads, and if you buy them whilst the courses are being broadcast they are cheaper.

The course that was on last week was the 'Fundamentals of Digital photography' which was very good. So good that I bought the course. I bought it whilst the course was on and got it for $99 (about £62) rather than $149.

The course that they have on at the moment is 'Post-Wedding Workflow with Zach and Jody Gray'. It follows on from a 'Wedding Photography Weekend' in January which was very good too. :thumbs:

I've used a monopod with the Sigma 150-500, and I found I got best results with OS on. But it was a cheap monopod, so I don't know if I would get the same results with a more rigid one.

I always leave mine on aswel to be honest with that lens on a monopod all seems ok.

Watched it as well and found it very useful and well presented.

I've subscribed to a few up and coming series, including the Jarod Polin Lightroom series. Quite tiring watching 3 or 4 days 18.00 - 23.00ish...:help:
