Sooooo... I'll be needing a filter. More for protection than anything else, although I'm sure it won't hurt for the landscape shots I find myself doing. I'll be getting a circular polariser for those lovely blue skies, but what about general purpose? UV? Skylight? Is there a difference?

:bang:

Skylight had a slightly blue tint. UV is neutral. I rather like an 81a rather than 81b (Skylight)

I personally do not use UV filters are they are not needed for digital cameras.

I consider a circular polariser essential, its the first filter you should buy.

I know that they're not needed for the UV filtering effect, but for the protection. I assume a UV filter is otherwise neutral.

Amazon appear to be selling a Hoya UV and a circ pol. for under £40 :o
