After going for over a year with a 50mm as my widest lens I'm in the market for a wider zoom for portraiture, low light events, street and travel lens. I've narrowed down to these lenses but wanted to hear your thoughts on the matter. I shoot a canon 550D.

Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 HSM
Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC USD
Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM
 
Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM would be my choice :canon:

Why would you want to go wider than 50mm for a portrait lens?

He may want to shoot an odd environmental portrait, which is where I'd pick the Sigma or the other two :)

So not so much a portrait as a full figure shot?

I think of portraits as being head and shoulders :)

Not just portrait. Event, street photography, travel, family holidays. Which is why I mentioned all the others too in the original post. 35mm on a crop = around 56mm on FF which is good for portrait. 50mm = 80mm and 70mm = 112mm all of which are considered trditional focal lengths for portrait, 50-85-135mm. I was considering a zoom rather than a prime as it would be far more convenient in almost all the situations I've described above.

I've had 2 Tamron 17-50, the first one was tac sharp the the zoom was so stiff I had to wrestle with it to get it to move, and it made a clicking noise as it zoomed, so it went back exchanged it and the next copy was soft on the left side at all apertures.
 
In your shoes I'd go for the Canon, prices are comparable and the zoom range is pretty good.
You would be left wanting a wider angle zoom with Tamron and the Sigma isn't long enough.
