On Holls with a DSLR

After having just recently come back from holiday in Caleta De Fuste, I have just finished sorting out my photos I took of family and friends. I took my old Nikon D80 with a couple of lenses, one wide and one Telephoto, and a speedlight borrowed from a friend.

I also took loads of photos and video clips with the iphone, and while the images produced by the Nikon combined with the speedlight were so much better quality, I did seem to have so much more fun running about with my mates with the iphone, as we were tipsy most of the time ;)

I have decided to get a little compact to take away with me next year, as I know I will always have it in my pocket when out and about. Just gotta track down a decent compact now :)

While we did not have children with us, some of us did behave like children most of the time, and it was fun catching the childish antics ;) . Most of the time the rest of the gang got bored while I fiddled with the settings of the D80, so I deffo think a compact is in order next time :)
 
Go for a tough one - if you're taking a compact on holiday - why then have to worry about it getting ruined. One of the modern waterproof compacts is great fun round the pool and out on boat trips where you'd leave a 'good compact' in your bag.
 
I left my DSLR at home last year and took the Canon P&S. Totally regretted it. I got lots of nice shots but no "great" ones (great for me i mean). I'll never go on holiday again without my DSLR again weather UK or abroad.

I bought an old Canon Powershot G7 with the idea of just throwing it in the bag and not worrying. It developed a fault on the very first day of use! I will get a new compact next time, probably wont bother buying second hand again.

I had the same idea of getting some great shots, but when with loads of mates it just does not happen. They did not have time to wait for me to set the camera then try and get the right composition. They just shout at me to get on with it and take the bloody shot!
 
I took both last year. D7000 for the "serious" shots, and Canon Ixus 115 for when I'm just relaxing, but want to be prepared in case something happens.

The Canon is also super easy for IR.
 
Why didn't you just put the dslr into auto and then your mates wouldn't have to wait for you fiddling with the camera. I know you'd only get snapshots ie. no worrying about composition, rule of thirds etc, but that's fine while running about with mates, but you still get good quality shots and the ability to get great shots when you have time.
 
took mine away this year and one 35mm prime. No bag.

Great for street pics . Glad I took it now.

Yes I suppose that's what I should have done, but for some reason shooting in Full Auto, is just something that did not occur to me :thinking: . Probably down to wanting to have some control over what I was doing.

I know I was shooting in auto when I was using the iphone, but when the controls and dials are at hand, it's difficult to leave them alone ;)
