Yes
I'm looking for lenses and accesories which will compliment my 400d. I am planning on using my camera at alot of events, gigs and shows etc. As well as portrait work.
I already have the camera and the kit lens.
Does anyone have any recommendations for equipment i should look for? I don't mind buying used.

gigs probably means low light so 50mm F1.4 or F1.8, 85mm F1.8 might be suitable as well?

I'm in the same position with my 350d and so far:

f1.8 50mm £50ish used

f3.5-4.5 24-85mm 80ish used

f4.5-f.6 55-255 IS (still looking but would like to pay no more than £150)

With that combination of lens I know my kit lens can be sold approx £30

So that would all come in under your budget if purchased used.

You then have the 50mm for low light situations
24-85 as a general lens
55-255 IS for longer length stuff

fd lens wont fit thats why they are cheaper.

look out for ef lens or ef-s

What sort of shows. Small intimate shows, or stadiums where you'll be miles way unless your press.

For low light conditions you need lenses with small f numbers - f1.8, f2.8 or so on.

FD lenses will fit with an adaptor, but no auto focus and you'll need to set aperture manually.

It'll be a mixture of both kinds of shows.

thanks for the info on the adaptor, i might buy one just for lenses to experiment with lol.

50mm f1.8 for its speed, although don;t forget the shallow DOF which might not be what you want for gigs etc. Maybe look at a IS lens used, like a 17-85mm (not sure on prices!)

Flash gun - I've just had the Nissin Di622 as a present - works very well with my 5D. I'm sure the 430EX or a used 550EX are better but for £100 new the Nissin does what i need.

FD lenses are obviously manual only - not sure how you cope with camera knowing your aperture other than setting it in manually ? sure google wll give an answer :D

To cover most bases I'd go for a wide lens, a fast lens and a telephoto.

Wide lens - the kit lens isn't all that bad as a starter lens.

Fast - On a budget the 50mm f1.8 and the 85mm f1.8 are both good, obviously with the 85mm you will need to stand a bit further back from your subject, so the 50mm might be better, you can see how you'd get on with that focal length by setting your kit lens to 50mm and see if you find that too short for portraits.

Telephoto - You can pick up 75-300mm lenses fairly cheap (I'm not only saying this because I have one for sale), I've had the Canon USM version for over a year and find it good, but others rate the Sigma version, which I think is a little but cheaper. This can be used for portraits and possibly the gigs etc when you need the longer range, although it isn't too good when there isn't much light, due to needing to keep the speed up and the small aperture at the long end.

Orther things to think about are a flashgun and maybe some filters...
