It's been an age since I visited TP as I'd lost my enthusiasm for taking pics. Anyway I realised this was mostly down to not being able to get the best from my 20D. So after continued nagging from my 2 photo buddies I have just part ex'd all my gear for a D300, SB600, 16-85, 60macro & a 1.7x convertor.

OMG.........what have I done! I think all my Christmas's have come at once. I was up till silly o'clock reading the manual and trying all the buttons, knobs and twiddly bits.

The weather here in Sussex is good, so I'm going "out for a play" after work.

I've been a Canon girl all my life so this is a HUGE culture shock for me........ does anyone have any links, hints or tips for a new Nikon convert!:)

You couldn't get the best out of your 20D so you spent a fortune switching to Nikon...

errr, way to go?

Enjoy Kathy :D. The D300 is an awesome camera. Enjoy getting to know it :D.

Every comparative test that I have read in the last three months makes the D300 the camera to beat. It tonks everything out of sight. I look forward to see what all that fumbling of buttons leads to.

Well you know what they say, a change is as good as a rest. Maybe such a huge decision like this is the very thing to get your mojo working again!

First of all, welcome to Nikon. How to get the best out of your new kit? Go out and play as you suggest, around Sussex. And get a good book, I have David Busch`s Nikon D300 book. Much better than the provided manual and explains all the bits and bobs in great detail.
Its a great camera, enjoy it.

Me too! Nikon pulled out all the stops when they made it!

Too true - and when it comes down to it, taking great photos is as much (if not more) about good mojo, than the equipment.

Heya,

Its a fountain of knowledge.

Another two fountains of knowledge all on reviews of lens, look around. Might be boring, but great if you are on the warpath for new lens.

I hear this is good I do not know :P

Hints and tips, photograph all the time, practice makes perfect, and its good to know your camera off by heart.

Insure it, in case it gets stolen/broken/damaged.

Get the lens that you need, a good lens opens up many doors. It all depends on the type of photography you enjoy doing.

You are in the world of digital, learn at least basic photoshop, so you can fine tune those pics, and get the best of photography. Think of it as darkroom for the modern era.

If you have the time, go to some courses, it helps to learn from people, whether it be from on here, or at a local collage.

The most important hint/tip, have fun :)
Enjoy :)

That's a pretty bold statement - does it "tonk" the D3 or D700?

I made the switch to Nikon a short while ago, traded in my 5D & 1D for D300 & backup with lenses & it was the best move I could have made for my photography & gave me the boost I needed to rekindle my photography bug.

The Nikon Creative Lighting system alone was worth the swop for me due to my wedding photography - I know the alienbees route was a possibility too but the CLs is so easy it's unbelievable - really added to my creativity & confidence whilst shooting.

At the end of the day, whatever you feel comfortable with is the best way for you to go (although the zoom lenses zooming the opposite way did throw me for a good while  Enjoy your new camera, looking forward to seeing some results

It does for me as I don`t want full frame......;)

first tip go back to canon :D
play with the fiddily bits there always fun ;)

Kathy what have you done? Well you've bought a cracking camera, but I think you might have bought a teleconverter whihc isn't compatablt with the lenses you mentioned. I could be wrong, but best double check that. Otherwise, you've got a cracking bit of kit there!!
