I don't think it does kids any harm to be left to their own devices every now and again, all this "you must buy educational toys" is just so they can sell you something new every 3 months as they "advance"
There aren't many kids that leave school without an education because their mum let them watch a bit of TV
12 hours a day would be a bit much though so don't get as addicted as the rest of us
