Yes
The light meter on my OM10 doesn't seem to be working. The red shutter speed indicator in the viewfinder sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.

Any ideas?

Under what conditions? you need to make sure you have a sensible ISO set (No point setting ISO 12 then expecing it to move from anywehre but underexposed indoors). Mechanically, check the linkage that moves when the aperture ring is turned, it is possible for it to jam.

To be honest if it doesn't work buy a new one, or upgrade, they're just not worth money any more.

When did you last check the batteries?

Brand new batteries.

Running on ISO 200 film. Aperture ring is working fine on my 50mm and on the tele zoom.

Maybe I should replace it. I haven't used it for about 10 years and just pulled it out. About half the time the red indicator was working. I wanted to check any light leakage, shutter mechanism etc.

I'm not sure whether it is worth sticking with Olympus - can get an OM1 for a good price on ebay. I have the standard 50mm lens and then a Vivitar 70 - 210m (japanese made model. Not amazing kit really, so wondering whether it is better buying a Canon EOS film camera that I can use with my (not much better) 500D lenses or not.

Decisions, decisions ...

Well this isn't a good day for Oly, my OM2 just threw a wobbler whilst attempting to take some shots to show you anyway:

Check this little lever.

Make sure it moves freely and springs back to that position. Look through the viewfinder and as you turn it anticlockwise (as you're looking through the VF) you should see the shutter speed increase.

There's nothing wrong with the Zuiko 50mm by the way, it took that shot! You can get an adapter to use OM lenses on Canon too you know.

Bear in mind, you can only use EF lenses on the Canon Film EOS's - the EF-S ones won't fit (and watch it with the third party ones e.g. Sigma DC range, as they have a EF mount ring, but some of them project out towards the sensor further like the EF-S lenses, and can interfere with the mirror on full frame film EOS's)

That being said - those nice Canon lenses with the red ring around the end are brilliant on the EOS film bodies :)

I'd only recommend an OM10 or OM20 to a novice who just wants to take a few snaps on film now and again , I tried to get my 9 year old grandson interested in photography and offered an OM10 to use, but he wasn't interested. :'(
Anyway check out Canon, as it's more versatile e.g. you can use all those lovely M42 screw lenses.

Yes - I sort of inherited it when I was about 18 from a relative. Used it for a few years (and I think for some nice shots out of it) but it ended up in my wardrobe until a few weeks ago.

I guess my choice is to either: Buy an OM1 body (if my lenses make that worth it), or abandon the whole lot, buy an EOS body and build up a collection of EF lenses that are interchangeable with my 500D (plus some EF-S lenses for the 500D alone).

You only really need a ef-s to cover up to 15/16mm - EF 16-35L/EF 17-40L take care of things after that

I'm staying with film and manual focus lenses for the foreseeable future so can't help you bridging film to digital, but the Canon manual focus lenses can now be used on some digital cameras so are going up in price, so if you went non AF Canon Camera and lenses, you wouldn't lose money.
