I've just bought an om 2n and thought everything was working fine when I gave it the once over, but there seems to be a problem with the manual mode. The camera only shoots in auto mode (aperture priority) even when the switch is set to manual, so the camera is overriding my shutter speed selection and using the shutter speed that is correct for the aperture. The light meters are working and the battery test lights up so I don't think it's the battery. Am I missing something or have I bought a lemon?

Thanks, Josh

Thanks Peter, I had a read through that earlier to see if there was anything in the common problems section, but no luck. I use an OM10 and with that I can go through all the shutter speeds with the back open, I'd have thought the same would be possible with this..

I just checked mine - the viewfinder display changes according to the setting. On auto, you get to see the shutter speeds, with the needle against the one that will be used. When set to "Off" I just see the meter needle hanging at the bottom of its travel; on "Manual" I see a gate where I have to centre the needle.

What do you see on the left of your screen?

I have the same Stephen, and both meters appear to be working; in manual mode the needle moves when I change the shutter speed but when I fire it it uses a different shutter speed to that selected.

I remember that I had an OM2 once which didn't work on 'auto' but behaved correctly on 'manual', in that I got the aperture and shutter speed that I had set on the control rings. It behaved like an OM1 except that the shutter speed wasn't controlled mechanically. The match needle alignment was ignored but I guess there should be a gate and a moving needle, as the shutter speed is controlled electronically.

Just a thought, but is there a film in the camera? If I remember correctly, the metering system on an OM2 is never accurate unless a film is loaded.

Well I had this problem on an OM20 i.e. wouldn't work on manual.....which would seem a basic electrical weak spot in design, h'mm well going on the old saying "if it can go wrong it will"

Well, it got taken to pieces to discover that someone had already had a go at fixing it at some point. I'm still not sure exactly what the problem was but I was quoted around 100e to fix it, not worth it for a camera that can be gotten for cheaper than that in the first place! Luckily the seller had agreed to refund it for me.

H'mm shame the repairer didn't tell you what the problem was as it would have been handy to know for DIY if any other guys have this fault (which I had).
