I am off to Disneyland Florida early next year, I already have a DSLR; but on my last visit found it became a bit heavy towards the end of a hot day being dragged around some amusement park (I was younger then as well).

So do I go with something like a new Olympus XZ-2 or something like a used Olympus E-PM2? Budget about £350.

Any advice most welcome.

Cheers

It all depends on whether or not you want something you can fit in a shirt pocket, I think the XZ-2 will fit, I don't think the E-PM2 & lens will.

Obviously the larger the sensor the better but not if its at the expense of your size requirements.

Perhaps with the pending release of the RX100 mk2 you could find a good deal on a mk1 version?

If you don't mind carrying in a case or using a jacket or cargo pocket then the Olympus micro 4/3rds, fuji X10, Nikon P7700 etc are all worth thinking about.

The last two can be picked up new within your budget but both benefit from a fast (95mb/s) SD card.
The fuji wins on iQ, the jpgs straight out of the camera are very good, the Nikon has a greater zoom range with a 28-200 f2-f4 lens

Thanks for your advice, It's given me a couple of more cameras to think about. Some more head scratching required:thinking:

Really depends what your priorities are. If size then RX100 (used), if not going for absolute minimum size then quite a few options - and the larger options will give you better IQ. Quite a few m4/3 options, Sony Nex etc,.

I change cameras with the weather but am currently using a Nex 5 with a Sigma 30 lens and it does all I want. Pretty small and light camera with very good IQ.

How would the likes of a Nex-3n or a Olympus PM2 with a kit lens compare to the Olympus zx-2? Only printing up to A4

It would be better. Not sure how much better (it will be small in most cases) or if that better matters to you and I haven't tested a ZX-2 but this is the usual outcome from a pretty small sensor versus an APS-C size.

Where it should be better
- lower DoF possible (although kit lens won't help)
- Better higher ISO results
- More dynamic range

Of course you can also change lenses (I know not the point here) and get shots that blow away the ZX-2 and they are not always costly. The Sigma prime lenses can be picked up for £70.

I will have to find a camera shop so I can have a closer look at the Olympus PM2 and the Sony Nex 3N.

Thank for the advice.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I have looked at the PM2 and the Nex 3N and decided that I don't want to buy into a second system; as the temptation to buy more lenses may well be too great. So it's between the Sony RX100, Fuji XQ1 or the Olympus XZ-2 (like the idea of the tilting screen). John Lewis are selling the RX100 for £359. Any recommendations will be most welcome.

If going for the compact for me it would be between a fuji X (in my case the X20) or the RX100

Wholeheartedly recommend the sony rx100..very pocketable and image quality is superb.Check out the rx thread.

Thanks again for the input, looks like it's going to be the Sony RX100.

Thanks again

Happy Christmas to you all

Pete
