I believe you'll always have to accept that smaller sensors just physically can't gather the same amount of light compared to larger format sensor.
But as long as your happy with the outputs who cares? Plenty of people out there are perfectly happy with iPhone snaps etc.
I think at present Sony are the ones to watch in terms of where the sensor market is going.... I think it's going to aim for high megapixel, sensitive and speed.

I keep thinking back to shooting 35mm iso 1600 film. Even mft is imo real magic in comparison

I remember shooting a band in the 80s using Agfa ISO1000 rollfilm in my Bronica, and being so pleased that a 10X8 print wasn't especially grainy. And TMax 3200 had an incredible grain - like golf balls some described it - when pushed a little.

Having processed from M43, APS-C and FF (and output from 1/2.3" compact sensors) it's not so much that one can easily tell what camera produced the final image at web size, but what can be done with the image in post and how the larger sensors will allow the image to be enlarged further before losing detail or having fringes and halos appear.

For quite a while before I went digital and for a little while after most of my photography was shooting indoors at gigs, festivals etc and I was quite happy with my 1600 film but the saving grace was that the prints were relatively small and to be honest a bit of motion blur and character actually added to the picture. No one ever complained, not once I wouldn't go back now.

Actually this shows how little I knew, when I first went digital I used to set my iso when I went out and shoot at it all day / night just like I'd have done with film but in my defence I'd never read anything about digital at all. Should have rtm
