Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

I have joined the club.

Bought the OM1-ii with the 12-40mm ii f2.8 kit lens and also the 40-150mm f2.8 lens for travelling. I was struggling with the Nikon ZF for my travel kit due to the grip and unable to get the SD card out unless I used pliers. My arthritis is a bit dodgy in my hands so prefer the grip of a DSLR type camera. Plus the reduction in weight helps. I will see how things go with OM and make a decision on my Nikon Z8 & ZF plus some nice lenses.

One thing is bugging me, how do you turn off the screen when you take the camera away from your eye and stop using the EVF.? ...On my Nikons the rear screen only comes on when I'm in playback mode reviewing the photos I have taken.

New toys :) by Swansea Jack, on Flickr
As a long term OM user the simple answer is keep the screen turned in , unless accessing the menu or SCP you can even review your photos on the EVF zoom in and out via the rear control dial . Once set up there’s hardly any need to use the screen

Yes, I only ever use the screen if I am taking pics with the camera nearly on the ground, or held high aloft. All my reviewing is done on EVF.

@bumper @Adamcski Thanks folks for your replies above.

Hope somebody can answer this question....Is the x2 TC usable from a quality point of view when paired with the 40-15mm f2.8 ED lens?

Yes works perfectly , look at the marsh harrier shot below your post that’s 300mm F4 + 2 X tc

Recently started thinking about some street photography and going down the line of using a prime plus camera.
I seem to have settled on the 17mm f1.8 (likely the mark2 for the weather sealing too) but pairing it with a OM1 mk2 and just wondering if it's gonna seem an odd pairing.
Everyone goes on about using a smaller camera etc eg om10 or 3 but while I fancy trying steet photography Im not going to buy another body too when this one is already a great one?

I'm in the middle of a mini break right now and trying a bit of street but only have the 12-40pro or samyang 7.5 so am having a play and getting out of my comfort zone.

Maybe Im being daft so just thought I'd throw it out there before spending money.

Sounds OK to me. The OM1 isn't so vastly larger than the OM3. The 17mm Mk2 is a great lens - although the only optical change is to some coatings apparently, in my view it does make a small difference for the better.

OK, open question. With the plethora of full frame cameras released this year from Nikon, Sony & Canon, what do you think 2026 holds for OM-System (and Lumix for that matter).

Despite a cracking lens in the 50-200 F2.8 IS Pro, overall I think it's been a pretty weak year for OM Systems. Sure we've had the fairly well received OM-3 (which is a lot of OM-1 internals wrapped up in a prettier body), and the decidedly lack lustre OM-5 MK II (basically just a brand name change and USB-C charging capability).

Also, on the firmware front both Nikon and even amazingly Sony, have been killing it lately with real nice firmware updates adding new features to a lot of their cameras. Alas unlike when the company was owned by Olympus, OM-Systems have been really quiet on that front also.

So, are we expecting big things from 2026 from OMS (at least a new pro body with an all new sensor) or do we all feel that OMS doesn't want to / Have the R&D money to spend on that and will just keep pushing the existing line up ? I'd really be interested in your thoughts, even though really no one outside of OMS will really know what plans they have ?

Hi folks hope all is well

Noticed what I believe is a smudge on my OM1 sensor. No idea how it got there and it doesn’t appear to impact the images I’m taking.

Anyone here experienced with cleaning these sensors and can recommend a cleaning product/ swab set?

You can see it on the right of the sensor here.

yeah, I know that the focus clutch is deleted from the new version, that, the coatings and the weather sealing are whats making me think I'd go for the Mk II over the MkI even though there's a couple of hundred difference in price

I went with the mk II 17 mm myself to pair with my om5 ii

No idea what they will do

That being said I’m happy with my OM1s and my Om5 II for what I do with them.

I think to keep up with others they will need to up their video game myself (although I don’t shoot video outside my DJI action cameras).

Perhaps they will release a new high spec sensor for the OM1 mark 3 the trickle down the current OM1 / 3 tech into future OM5 bodies.

I’ve never had an OM5 but quite like my mark 2 version. It’s small and works great for what I need.

For those of you who have wet cleaned your sensors before. Do you leave the camera off or switch it on and just put it in electronic shutter mode and stay clear of the button

I have always cleaned my FF sensors with the camera shut off. For cleaning solution I use Eclipse with Pec Pads and swabs if needed.

I’ve just read online that we should have it ON to hold sensor in place??

I’ve just ordered the ones Wex sell online, 12 mm ones.

I’ve not done it before so a little anxious but everyone I know has said they do it and it’s not hard

It’s a pretty rare occurrence to need to clean a MFT sensor , how bad is it

Hmmm probably a good idea , with a floating sensor , done loads of dslr ones in the past but never a MFT one

I've spoken to my friends who have cameras with ibis. They have cleaned their sensors without issue. They switched their cameras off. I've watched various videos and read online posts, and there isn't a consensus as to having the camera on or off.

A friend had his sensor cleaned by OM at a photography show in the past and they had the camera off, so that is how he does it.

Then other videos stated to have it powered on to steady the sensor.

I do my Panasonic g80 with the camera switched off and never had a problem, I use the K&F Concept sensor cleaning kit. Never had to do the om system or Olympus cameras before.
Does make you wonder if the manufacturers just make it sound hard to get you to send it in ,for extra income ???

So took my camera to WEX they looked at it and stated it wasn’t dirt on the sensor. Tested it at various settings and F stops and there is nothing showing in any images. Manager thinks it’s a filter issue as appears to be under the glass and said something about the AA filter. She said it’s not damage and stated I should submit for warranty repair with OM.

Now I purchased this camera from Amazon and sold by Amazon November 2024. I registered it on OM and uploaded proof and got the extra warranty (so 2.5 years total). Now one of my friends has said because I purchased from Amazon I won’t get the warranty??

Any thoughts?

Check with OM Systems.

I am not too worried. If it is covered great, if not, oh well, it was a great deal and either I pay to fix it, or bin it and have a new camera day lol

Known issue Sensor Marks

I have watched the Olympus tech people clean sensors on their IBIS equipped cameras at the photography Show
They were definitely switched off as they wet cleaned with swabs
Cleaned M4/3 sensors on my Olympus and Panasonic cameras power off and they were all fine afterwards

Amazon UK is on their approved suppliers/stockists list. If you bought it from Amazon I think you should be ok.

Amazon is also on their approved suppliers drop-down when you register a camera. I checked when I bought my om3’s and they approved the extended warranties.

So it appears some bodies have had this issue before.

I have read around and my item was sold and distributed by Amazon, not a third party seller and the box has the same contents as my other OM1 from Jessops, including the European Warranty card, so I think I should be fine,

Yes, i think the issue is if you pruachse it on Amazon, but from a third party seller that they deem gray or parallel imports.

Like I said, it was the kit box with the OM1 and 12-40 F2.8 Pro ii. I registered it all online with them, got the 6 months extra warranty and it tells me I am eligable to purchase extended 5 years for £119.99.

So, I think I should be ok...will report back once I know if anyone is interested.
