Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

Another thumbs up for Cotswold cameras from me. I have used Hdew in the past but Cotswolds have been cheaper of late so have got my custom. No problem with either shop and service received has been no different in my experience.
And me. My experience wasnt as good as yours as i had no comms after ordering and my lens arrived before i got a shipping email but it came within 7 days so i cant complain there. I still have question marks over why the lens build date was oct 2024 but i cannot fault the lens at all . I have zero concerns with the lens and for the price too .

Honestly robin ,what extra service do you want on a grey market lens , perhaps they will send a butler to deliver it on a silver platter . I know your a mate but you do spout a total load of crap at times
.... For as long as I have known you, you have been primarily driven by money and getting something for nothing if you can. I am different from you and I primarily want good customer service which is personal and I take a longer term view and prefer to build personal business relationships.

I have read enough about Costwolds Cameras customer service to put me off even after your recommendation. However, I don't doubt that others are very satisfied with the service they have had. That's fine, no problem ~ I am merely sharing my recommendations which may assist some people here. :)

I think you may well find if you dig deep enough and read between the lines that there was either another company of the same name or a change of ownership in the past couple of years robin , yes the previous iteration did get bad reviews but the current one gives excellent service . Albeit cheaper than most others . Plus I can only state what I know is factual I have recently bought a OMS 100-400mkii my son has bought a Nikon Z8 and a 200-600Z lens all delivered bnib within 7 days of placing order . I would have absolutely no qualms in using them again

How did you find out the year your lens was made, I would like to look up my lenses.

.... That is absolutely fair enough, Jeff, and it's good to know Cotswold Cameras history in more detail.

But for me personally I remain wanting to have long term person-to-person business relationships in the same way as I do with HDEW and many other companies I buy from. I enjoy being a company's highly valued customer and I find that they look after me in more ways than the purchase price. I can pick up the phone and talk to someone before buying (and after buying). I am the same when it comes to shops, large or small, in my local town ~ All the staff at Waitrose know me and I get very well looked after. They also very much appreciate and ask for my honest feedback.

First images on Flickr with MC-14 mounted on my new OM 50-200mm F/2.8 Pro but on E-M1X.

The Heron was photographed at very long distance in overcast weather and the image greatly enlarged. But even the highlight in the eye was captured and so I am pleased with the lens performance. I'm looking forward to my results on the OM-1 mk2 which arrived a few days later.

Waitrose you snob , what’s wrong with Morrisons or even the co.op. . Just sent you a message looks like a good storm expected at west bay Tuesday , photos needed LOL

Sorry Robin the Heron isn't doing much for me, quality isn't that good just looking at it, the winter plumage adult black-headed gull is great though. More like that please ;)
Could do with the original from the heron to see how far away that was and how much cropping you've done.

.... Waitrose is only 7 minutes walk along the river path from home. Morrisons and Co-op are both outside town and their customer service is virtually non-existent and I'm not keen on most of their foods either. Shopping there feels like a chore whereas it's seeing friends who work in Waitrose and it feels like a friendly corner store.

Got your message and replied. Cheers but storms are no longer in my comfort zone ~ I have also virtually given up shooting surfers for the same reasons. Getting blown about while shooting into an onshore wind with horizontal sea spray or rain is something I prefer not to do any more.

.... I understand what you mean about the Heron ~ It's more like an illustration than a photograph and I just look at it as an image which I like. I'm not interested in trying to impress other photographers.

As the camera settings show on Flickr, it was shot at maximum focal length and was massively enlarged probably about x20 ~ I can't be bothered to calculate exactly or even do screenshots and upload to Flickr to then post here ~ I have other things I prefer to spend time doing.

Quite understand both of these points. Taking photos should only be an ordeal if that's what we choose.

.... I totally agree. Sometimes it can be worth suffering for our art and this applies to all the genres and includes getting up at silly-o'clock to drive in the dark and arrive at a shooting location before dawn. It's good to have the luxury of choice which professionals only have if they are mega famous such as (David) Bailey for example.

@the black fox Jeff, re photographing a storm at West Bay, I much prefer a particular surfing beach not far away, as this photo ....

JESS ON THE JURASSIC COAST by Robin Procter, on Flickr

Oh hang on! This was shot back in 2021 on the Olympus 100-400mm ('mk1') I disliked so much! But please note it was only it's physical handling and operation I disliked rather than image quality.

a practice shot with the 100-400mkii today in poor light ,afraid the juries still out on whether this lens is a keeper or not

With that lens you need good light
.... And that is why paying for a more expensive lens which can handle poor light better is, in my opinion, more worthwhile.

At least OM offer a range of lenses of varying capability and costs.

But I have always been as good at spending other people's money as I am spending my own :D . Life is short, so try and do what you enjoy.

Fully aware of that Terry ,might have had my shutter speed to low , I still have my 300mm f4 and t.c’s which is hard to beat . I only got it because I missed the zoom flexibility but in all honesty I prefer the Nikon 200-500 vr which I bought at the same time … .. we shall see… the totally crap weather of late isn’t helping either

.... Out of curiosity, did you buy your 150-400mm TC Pro 'Big White' from Cotswold Cameras?

Yep. Never thought i would be able to afford one but at their price and getting 1200 for my 300mm . It was something i thought was worth the risk. I didnt really miss zoom i didnt think before going for the 150-400 (i had the 100-400 before the 300) but then i think back to dragonfly season last year and there was defo some instances where zoom would have been useful so im looking forward to next summer but even before then i think Ive already had my moneys worth out of it from a pure enjoyment level of what its helping me get.

.... I have used my 150-400 extensively on dragonflies and damselflies with great success and also using in-camera focus stacking on a monopod.

I agree ~ The enjoyment of enablement is what it's all about.

Hi folks, hope all is well.

Just ordered the OM5 mkii as my carry everywhere camera.

I don't have many lenses, 8-25 F4, 12-40 F2.8 II and the 40-150 F2.8.

Ideally I want to keep this camera as small as possible so I'm thinking of just sticking a small prime lens on it.

Panasonic 20 mm F1.7
Oly 17 mm F1.8
PL 15mm 1.7

I've had the 20 mm F1.7 on my old GX9 (which I regret selling hence where I am now).

What's the Oly lens like

Do you mean the Oly 17mm f1.8? If so, It's my go-to prime as shots above. I have the Mk2 version which is water resistant. I did have the 20mm PanaLeica, but I couldn't gel with it. Nowadays I prefer to keep Oly lenses on my Oly (OM) body.
PS I find that the Oly 12-45 is a cracking lens, possibly sharper than the 12-40, and a decent physical size for both an OM5 (I had the Mk1) and the OM3. Downside is the f4 maximum aperture if you need the light.

Yes sorry 17 mm F1.8, edited my post.

Yes I have OCD and stick with the same lenses and bodies.

Trying not to buy too much if I'm honest. Just really miss the GX9 so figured £849 for the silver OM5 ii with 5 year warranty wasn't too bad.

Just want some small primes, cheaper the better.

I liked the Panasonic 25 mm F1.7 also and that's dirt cheap so may order that now lol

The PL 9/1.7 is a handy little lightweight lens to carry if you use a zoom like the 12-45.
Those are the lenses I use almost exclusively on my older, but similar E-M5 iii

The pancake 20 mm F1.7 with naff AF lol

If it’s a new body, I’d stick to Om system weather sealed lenses if you plan on using it in bad weather. Just to be on the safe side if warranty is needed.

Just looked at the spare battery price.....why so expensive??? Any decent third party options you'd all recommend?

I will have to use the lenses I have for now as I can't just go and spend (wish I could) so will see which is the smaller 8-25 or the 12-40 and make do with that for now :)

Am I right in thinking that they only come with a lead now and no charger?
Not a fan of in camera charging as the sole method, luckily my older model came with an Olympus mains charger.
If it hadn't I would have bought one and not one of the two prong USB type either.
Not a fan of 3rd party batteries since one (ExPro Black) swelled up and got stuck in my Fuji X-E2
I had to superglue a piece of plastic on the battery casing to pull it out, it was stuck firmly in there.

I think they just come with a lead now but I charge the other cameras I have via USB C with the many high power chargers we have scattered around the house (although have chargers for them also). I even have two batteries for the OM 1 that have the USB C built in, Mathorn something or other. They are great - batteries should all come with that facility in my opinion.

Depending on my bank account after Xmas.

Cotswolds are doing the 17 f1.8 ii for £299, think I will try and get one

Thats what I was looking at but thought best to wait till after xmas post

I have read and seen online that these OM5 bodies have an issue with the tripod mount snapping. I have some spare 3LT universal brackets, would these help do you think? I don't suppose it will be used on a tripod often, and although I have a PD clip, i think I have used it twice....so doubt it will be used here.

Anyone had theirs break?
