Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

It’s not the rain robin , or the wet .. it’s the heavy grey overcast that seems to come in regularly up here . Everything turns a shade of dark brown and decent shots become impossibly hard to get
.... Yep, photography is all about the light.

super Pete always very obliging birds

.... Err, nearly all my surfer sessions are photographed on the Atlantic coast of Cornwall. Plus surf waves are best when it's very stormy. Also Jeff, do you know how high the big Atlantic waves of Nazare in Portugal are?

.... A friend of mine who shoots Canon and has been on trips with me would not agree that the Canon system is more weatherproof ~ He shoots Canon 5D4 + L lenses and has had to pay hundreds of pounds to repair at AJ Johnstone's after a wet session with me.
just this morning heard of one of canons top of the range mirrorless supposedly water sealed that's in for repair and they won't do it under warranty due to water damage hmmmmm

.... Canon wouldn't repair my friend's 5D4 under warranty either.

You would have thought that by now, several years after Olympus first introduced internationally certified standards of weatherproofing, that their competitor camera brands would have followed!

Still, who cares! OM System enable outdoor photographers worldwide much better than their rivals.

Hi All

I have just bought a OM-d EM 1 mk2 from ebay, only 203 ms actuations and for all intents and purposes brand new but old stock. I'm still waiting for a 12-45 f4 pro to be delivered from mpb, shoild be here today.

I cannot for the life of me update the firmware, I can connect the camera to OM Workspace via a usb cable but a message tells me that the camera cannot be updated, so I tried through the OI app. Once again connection is made over wifi, the app recognises the camera ( model and serial number ) but when I go into camera management there isn't a box with update firmware that can be clicked/tapped.

Am I stuck with version 1.4 of the firmware? Any help appreciated.

Hmmm it shows the latest update to be v3.4 but as Olympus are no longer in existence then there’s a possibility you can’t update it , personally if it’s working o.k leave it alone as if you make a mistake in updating it ,there’s a possibility of bricking it . Plus you won’t gain anything amazing by updating anyway.
The only real problem the mkii suffered from was the grips swell and come loose bar that they just keep working

Thanks Jeff, appreciate the input and info.

If you do suffer from the grips swelling ( pretty sure it has to do with greasy skin absorption) there’s a guy on Etsy that does replacement printed grips but he’s based in Australia worth keeping on a back burner in your memory , got some super shots with mine when I had it. The menu takes some learning though

I'd definitely give it a try as Trevor suggested as there's a whole lot of improvements from V1.4 to the last V3.7, so it's worth persevering.

It also says that for the older models you can only update via the OM Workspace desktop software (not the mobile OI.Share app). I remember when I owned one of these, for some strange reason Workspace wouldn't identify my camera unless I was using the genuine Olympus USB cable it came with, and also wouldn't work properly on my MacBook Pro, so I ended up updating via our "family" Windows based PC. I also seem to recall, with mine at least, it would only work if I first removed the SD cards ? Just a thought.

After persevering with OM Workspace, I realised that the camera needed to be in storage mode after you connect the cable, once I did this, away it went, I'm now on 3.7 so many thanks to Jeff, Trevor and Andrew for pushing me in the right direction, just need a lens or two to be delivered and then I'm set for a while.:banana::banana:

Many thanks again gents.

If your after a bargain lens for it take a peak at Cotswold cameras ,grey imports but really cheap bnib

Caught this one on Wednesday, which appears to be the last day of reasonible weather for some time.

Kevin2 1 by Peter Dyson, on Flickr

I have many failed attempts with him hidding behind twigs, flying off into the distance before I get close enough. I think he took pity on me and stayed around. I was wondering if the camera was emitting a high pitched sound they could hear but I could'nt.

QUESTION FOR THOSE WHO HAVE UPGRADED FROM OM-1 'mk1' TO OM-1 mk2 .....

My 'mk1' settings and buttons are extensively customised, so can I Save them in OM Workspace and then Copy them to my mk2?

I would update the Firmware afterwards unless OM W suggests it as soon as I connect. I always use the USB-C cable to connect and do so via my desktop Mac. Camera battery will be 100% charged.

EDIT: The answer is no because the two camera's Firmware and features are quite different.

So I'll just manually match individual settings by viewing the bodies side by side and where the settings are identical.

Yeah thats what i had to do and i always worry ive missed some setting off somewhere. I had my om1 exactly perfect to me.

.... I am midst doing this now. This is the first time a new camera hasn't needed a Firmware update ~ It has been supplied already on 1.3.

I think that although the worry is that a personal setting may have been missed, it might also help improve shooting because your missed setting wasn't the best one for your needs.

Modern cameras are so complicated (in a good way) with so many settings!

I'm pleased that there is a Basic Manual in the box because after a few years of using the OM-1 'mk1' it is easy to forget stuff.

Well after a lot of pondering I have put my 300 f4 up on eBay - it is fabulous but it's more than I need really and I do miss a zoom occasionally. Plan is to reinvest in a 100-400 Mk2 once it's sold :)

(not going to put it up on here as the for sale section seems pretty quiet but I will if there's any interest)

Well it sold right away so now time to start looking for a 100-400 mk2!

Well done,

I looked but couldn't see it.

What did you put it up for?

And by the way Mike, I think the 100-400 mk2 is a cracking lens. Even on the EM1X.
Cheers - I sold the 300 and the MC14 together for £1400 which I think was pretty fair (roughly the same as I paid for them). Plenty for a 100-400ii and a bit left over so I am happy :)

After some ups and downs in my life, I am slowly able to get back into photography and start using my OM3. I’ve even joined a really friendly local photography club, so feeling inspired to take more pictures.

I took a detour on a cloudy day over Pendle Hill and took this, then edited in DXO (which is new to me and I’m still learning)

Cotswold cameras Mike

Cheers - yes, they look to be the best from what I have seen
.... The cheapest price but not necessarily the best service. HDEW have far better personal service by all reports, both before and after purchase ~ I have many years experience of them.

Honestly robin ,what extra service do you want on a grey market lens , perhaps they will send a butler to deliver it on a silver platter . I know your a mate but you do spout a total load of crap at times

Another thumbs up for Cotswold cameras from me. I have used Hdew in the past but Cotswolds have been cheaper of late so have got my custom. No problem with either shop and service received has been no different in my experience.
