Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

That used to be my dilemma - and I have the excellent 8-25. But looking back over my photos I find I have rarely use it, and that 12mm is perfectly wide enough for most things. Throw in a wide prime "just in case" and you're sorted. Of course, I may decide to have another go at selling my 8-25.
Thanks Stephen - I am going to go back through my Flickr and see how often I went wider than 24mm FFE then decide (suspect not very often!)

I rarely zoom in past 12mm on my 8-25mm. I wanted a 12-25mm f4.0 but can I would hardly use it and I am considering selling my 12-40mm f2.8

These tiny sensors sure do pack a punch don't they?

I'm currently saving for the OM1 mk2, love my EM1X's handling but I'm convinced the newer sensor gives cleaner results.

Also the sheer size of the EM1X makes macro work a little challenging.

Well I went back 2 and a half years and found a grand total of 2 shots taken wider than 24mm FFE

In all honesty I am wondering whether I should just be using my RX10iv (24-600 equiv) for walkabout duties - the alternative would be a 12-45, 12-100 or 12-200 + maybe a cheapo ultrawide for the odd time it's needed.

12 -100....!

Cheers Jerry,

The Smallrig Cube lights are bloody brilliant little things. Especially when you use the supplied snoots.

How have I only just discovered these?

Well after near-endless deliberation, cogitation, machination etc I’ve ordered an 8-25 - I haven’t used an ultra wide angle much recently but that could be because I haven’t owned one for some of the time, and also the 8-25 zooming in to 50mm ffe is very useful. I have a 60mm prime for something a bit longer but I’ll probably end up with a 12-100 or 12-200 (which could maybe replace my RX10iv which has been great but feels a bit long in the tooth now). Also might trade the 300f4 for a 100-400ii but that’s another story!

Thanks - sorry if I’m being a pillock but can I just check what lenses you are referring to as I am not finding them :)
Sorry for delay responding, I have been travelling back from holiday.

There is a used 9-18mm here https://uk.webuy.com/product-detail?id=SLENSOLYM918456EDA That might be a good buy?

The 12- 100mm https://www.wexphotovideo.com/om-system-m-zuiko-digital-ed-12-100mm-f4-0-is-pro-lens-3158442/

The 8-25 mm https://www.wexphotovideo.com/om-system-m-zuiko-digital-ed-8-25mm-f4-0-pro-lens-3109315/

The 40-150mm cheap one https://www.wexphotovideo.com/olymp...ed-black-micro-four-thirds-lens-used-3289090/ (I think this is on offer new somewhere at the moment). Just realised I had mis-typed previously and put 50-150mm - sorry!

Yes the 40-150 is on offer until tomorrow at £111 from OM Systems direct

Great reply - thanks so much for taking the time! There are so many options with M43 it is bewildering at times for a newbie but I think I have half an idea now. I’ve bought an 8-25 and will likely get a longer general purpose zoom at some point. Cheers:)

The 8-25 arrived today - weather is awful so no shots yet but it feels great, well put together and solid yet not big and heavy at all. Seems 'as new' to me but a big discount off full price so well done Wex :)

.... I used to have a brace of E-M1X as it saves faffing around with and the risks of swapping lenses outdoors but I sold one of them and bought the OM-1 (first version) and seriously regret doing so!

The OM-1 might have some extra features (which I don't really need) and be technically more advanced but its stiff rotary dials, particularly the top dial, is a killer because I only shoot in Manual-mode including ISO. Even after going back to OM in Portugal the issue has not been satisfactorily resolved.

My Olympus Battery Grip HLD-10(?) never ever gets removed apart from when changing the upper battery and the twin battery chamber of the E-M1X is very much preferred.

The extra grip really helps physical handling, especially when out in the rain, and especially when mounted on either the new OM 50-200mm Pro or the 150-400mm TC Pro.

I even prefer having the extra grip for my Macro efforts, especially in balance with the large Godox V1Pro flashgun.

But we each have our individual preferences without there being a 'right' or a 'wrong' way!

I have just done a Search in this thread "50-200mm" and no-one who has bought one appears to have posted about it.

No-one?

I have had mine for a few weeks now (over a month) and shot thousands on it already ~ Mostly women's football every Sunday and some full days at railways and Horse Trials (I am a team member). I love it as much as my 150-400mm TC Pro!

I had the 40-150mm F/2.8 Pro since 2019 and found it excellent but the replacement 50-200mm F/2.8 Pro is a big step up for my chosen subjects.

By all accounts it is a great new lens but I think for me the long end would be too short.

.... Which is exactly why I have kept my beloved 'Big White', as they are known, 150-400mm and most often I have the MC-14 mounted as well as the TC built-in option when needed.

The Big White has too much reach for most of a women's football pitch or for Horse Trials.

It's Horse-for-Courses isn't it.

Again, like the Big White, I have yet to read a bad word about its white brother/sister.

If any piece of camera gear is beyond being afforded by a photographer, that can never be a valid criticism of its functional excellence.

I just wish OM System would release an OM1X but I guess they got burned by the sales figures on the EM1X.

Oh well here's hoping.
.... OMG so do I !!! And you and I are not alone in wishing that.

So far, OM's push has been to promote the OM-1 mk2 as their flagship and so logically there would need to be significant differences between a future OM-X and a OM-1 mk3.

Also the strong competition from other brands in a we-are-told shrinking camera market doesn't help.

Both hubby and myself have OM1’s, and they are mostly used for birds, dragonflies, and general wildlife. Given the £500 cashback on the OM1 MK2 at the moment, has anyone upgraded from an OM1 to an OM1 MK2, and have you found the upgrade beneficial for our type of photography please? I have done a search but came up blank! Many thanks, Marcia

Hi Marcia. although I've no experience of either camera, I do have the OM3, which has the same innards as the OM1 II. To say I'm impressed is an under-statement.
