Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

I found the dual stabilisation is pretty decent with the mk2 Jeff, what do you reckon?
Yes it’s looking really good alby , I’m also noticing that the RAW files need far less p.p so it seems like they have done something more than just added a lens coating .

Nope just standing there quietly next to the bush watching . I do have a nice smile when required though. I’m also totally tone deaf so I can’t hear thirds I just work on a visual sighting of any birds . The only birds that are in my hearing range are blackbirds and pigeons

Jeff,

If I could ask you personally the question that I posed generally this time yesterday, do you use auto ISO?

Yes all the time it’s one less thing to worry about , I have it maxed out so in theory shouldn’t miss a shot. These days noise can 90% of the time be eliminated in PP

With the caveat ,…..that’s on the OM1 and will probably hold good on OM1 mkii and OM3 . I wouldn’t attempt it on the older models

New OM-1 is on charge. Quick test and all seems ok.

Going away next week to rural Suffolk ( to get the dog away from fireworks hopefully).

Hoping to try some night sky shots if the weather is good to me.

Nothing is ever simple is it?

Trying to update the firmware on my new OM1.2; following all the advice on the video provided by OM but get so far and then "Unable to detect the Camera"

Have emailed customer services but they may take up to 5 working days to respond. So it could be a week on Monday before I get a reply.....:headbang:

Which method are you referring to?
Using IO Share app or Workspace?

FWIW I have used the IO Share method a few times (not latterly) and it has worked well.

Edit
NB the original Digital Updater program was very reliable but when they introduced WS with the integral updater I never really got on with that method, that is why I switched to using the IO Share method.

Don't know if this helps, but I recall on my earlier Olympus bodies, I'd sometimes get that, and what whacked for me was first removing all memory cards, then trying the updated. Might be worth a shot ?

Just got a 100-400 mkii from Cotswold cameras £840 , took 8 days from ordering to delivery. Got here as it was getting dark so will play tomorrow but you can’t knock that price when current u.k price is £1299 o.k you can get £200 cashback but you got to pay that out first .
Same lens ,same box delivered by dhl express
What's your take on it Jeff, compared against the 300f4?

Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried it with and without cards but no joy!

Edit: I'm going to try using the OI Share app as suggested by BB above. Just charging the phone up.

still only at day 3 but to date I would say its far superior to the old version and is holding its own against the 300mm f4 but I haven't yet tested in real time distant birds and obviously it will be limited as the light gets worse . I'm keeping both and both t.c's
Had a quick half hour session after the rain stopped , late afternoon and I think I need to increase my minimum shutter speed not so many keepers but the light was terrible

Took the OM-1.2 on the dog walk this morning.
Main intention was to try the grad ND. There is a part of the walk where it’s fields, then trees and sky.
But didn’t need it there, the camera handled the differing contrast well enough on its own.
Later though I manage to get a picture through some tall trees with the sun behind them using grad ND and it worked really well.

Think I am going to like this camera

Did you put the camera in MTP mode when connecting to the PC?

Aha! Yes, I did try MTP mode BUT (and it's a big but) I hadn't clicked ok afterwards..... It works now. Wahay...!

Thanks for pushing me in the right direction.

For those of you that went from the original OM-1 to the MK II, did all the little changes add up to it being that much better than the MK1 or just incremental ?

I’m possibly considering one, but would need improvements in these areas
  • IBIS - I don’t know if it’s just mine or my technique, but in video mode I’ve never been that impressed with the IBIS especially when walking or panning. I can get as good if not better from my FF bodies. Weirdly though, in photo mode it seems just great ?
  • Is it that much easier having all the subject detection modes (including humans) grouped together in the SCP ?
  • Is the AF-C any better than the MK1
  • Any improvements at all in video mode ?
Overall do you think it’s a worthwhile addition or replacement to the MK1 ?

Thanks

Glad you got yours sorted.

Mine is on v1.2 and is staying on that unless something comes up in future releases that I feel is relevant to me.

I am very risk averse and this used to wind up my managers in IT lol

It was easy when you know how! I don't think I gained much from the update but I'm learning my way around the OM1 mk2 in greater depth than i ever did with the Mk1.

Aint got much time at the mo but a quick answer as i have both bodies. and used the mk1 for a few years before getting a mk2

  • Is it that much easier having all the subject detection modes (including humans) grouped together in the SCP ? - not sure what you mean here. I choose between subject detect using a back button combined with a wheel. and have that on both bodies.
  • Is the AF-C any better than the MK1 - I have noticed a definite improvement on BIFs in front of busy backgrounds but its still not 100% nailing shots.
  • Any improvements at all in video mode ? - Subject detect works in video now. But I still dont think its that good at focusing in video mode.

Someone found an unbelievably rare (for the Isle of Man) Shorelark today. I was so thankful to have this 150-400 when this bird turned up. To have the flexibility and reach was so good. I was flicking between tc on and off all the time. Even at one point had to zoom out :O

What a lovely looking bird, well spotted and you must be chuffed:)

Looking on the RSPB site

Indicates on their map that the nearest likely area to the IoM is around the Wirral (if I have read it right)

PS is it worth notifying the BTO of the sighting?

Just out of interest how did you get to extremadura?
Thats one place in europe i would like to go to but how to get there seems (relatively) tricky for someone who has never been to Europe .
So sorry for late reply, I’ve not been back here. Full of cold now too, annoyingly, so haven’t been out as much as hoped.

We take the car from Portsmouth to Santander and then travel by road. The roads are mostly pretty empty if you avoid the cities. I confess I usually don’t do any driving, but I have done a bit on the emptier roads in Spain and Portugal. I think it would be quite hard without a hire car, although there probably are places that would work. My heads very fuzzy at the minute with my cold so I can’t think.

I hope you get well soon.

And I look forward to any photographs you are able to share from your break there.

Some lovely shots on here today

Starting to really believe they have done something special with this lens alby, it’s definitely on a par with the 300mm . Photos to follow on Monday

Ooo thats interesting. I kept looking at Santander and wondered how hard it is to get out of the port if that was the first time driving on the wrong side.
If it was like the chunnel and straight onto an A road that might be the best way.
