I’m in Extremadura with my new OM1 mark ii that arrived the day before I left. I also have my OM1 mark i which until now has hosted my 150-400mm. I think I’ve set it up the same now, but I wondered if anyone can point me to a video to help with some of the new settings, or else advise. I’ve looked on YouTube and can’t seem to find what I want without having to watch many hours of videos…. And some people do a lot of chit chatting :ROFLMAO:

I’d like to be able to switch easily between the subject detection through most (or all) of frame and using a smaller chosen focus point and not subject detect. I was hoping to use the priority settings in the AF menu 2 but it doesn’t seem to be working as I expected. Please share your own set up or ideas if you do something similar.

I currently use back button AF, and have the two front custom buttons set to switch to C1 (birds in flight settings) and to turn the subject detection on and off. Perhaps these priorities don’t work with BBF?

I haven’t read the manual yet actually, so I will have to dig into that, but a good video would be helpful.
Hi Bebop

Hopefully you are enjoying your holiday :)

Not sure if this fully addresses your needs but I have these two custom switch settings

I have the AEL lock button set to subject AI, it does two things (a) toggle on/off (b) by holding it down and spinning the front wheel it 'scrolls' the Subject AI options.

As for AF area, I use the function switch to switch between two AF areas e.g. single centre AF and Full Frame area.

But note AFAIK and IIRC when using Subject AI even if you are in Subject AI and once acquired & focused it will 'follow/track' the subject across the full frame, even if your starting AF was single central.

I can only suggest you try this and see/check my recall is indeed correct!

You could try the lever switch near the view finder. You can defo setup one position to be all points and the other to be single small point. Maybe it will work with subject detect on in one position and off in the other. In fact ive got my mkii here. Ill give it a go

Many thanks @peat and @Box Brownie. My last thought before I nodded off last night was using the lever. I do forget about that lever. I will set it up. Cheers!

The camera will at least function as my mark i does at the moment - I hope!

I’ve set the option for tracking outside of the focus area once subject has been detected - a welcome new option (y) . I did read the manual last night but didn’t learn anything more than the info button tells you.

I have set the Af-on to prioritise subject detection and shutter to prioritise target area, but I think autofocus with shutter is disabled with C-Af for me, so obviously I can’t have it doing both.

Thanks. I'm watching that section by section and hoping to take in everything he says!

Thanks so much! I’ll have a watch of this later.

Got out early this morning to try beat the rain. I did but it was still very dark. Thank god for modern cameras and modern software with the ability to clean up high iso images.
In the old days I would have seen the light level and gone back to bed. :)

Sorry spamming again but this Chough was at iso12800... with tc engaged. Not using pro capture either. Bird detect on and all points. I am 100% positive the mkii can focus on birds in flight in front of busy backgrounds alot better than my mki can. This is probably the first time Ive seen a major difference in the two.

Just got back from doing some work in our wood.

The shelter needed some guys tightening etc.

So why not scout around for some fungi whilst I was there?

Wow that is completely different to what happened with my lens. Interesting.

Just out of interest how did you get to extremadura?
Thats one place in europe i would like to go to but how to get there seems (relatively) tricky for someone who has never been to Europe .

Just got a 100-400 mkii from Cotswold cameras £840 , took 8 days from ordering to delivery. Got here as it was getting dark so will play tomorrow but you can’t knock that price when current u.k price is £1299 o.k you can get £200 cashback but you got to pay that out first .
Same lens ,same box delivered by dhl express

Maybe 15 - 20 years ago I went to Extremedura. I flew to Madrid and picked up a hire car there . The Madrid ring road was a bit hairy! But these days I've stopped flying so that makes it more complicated.....

Fly to Madrid, train to Cáceres is probably the easiest. Can also rent a car (or bus) from Seville or Lisbon. Lived there for a year but spent more time drinking than taking photos…

Yeah i looked at madrid and since never driving on the wrong side i think madrid roads for a first experience is too much for me :)

Mine is on day 7 from order. At Stanstead now, due to be delivered

About £1100 cheaper than any UK stockist.

Will get a 75-300 from them as well currently at £270.

Just wondering......do you all use auto ISO for your bird photography?

Since getting my OM1 Mk2 I'm looking at my technique in bird and landscape work from the ground up.
I have used Auto ISO for ages and with EC as needed re: birds against the sky or white birds against dark background.

Thanks Box. I've never used it myself so far but am thinking that's the way to go......
IIRC I have my upper limit set at 10000 or 12800 ISO as I don't fear the noise what with the likes of modern noise reduction (in my case DxO PhotoLab) is capable of. FWIW and IMO the sensor on the OM1 is, in noise terms, superior to the older Olympus E-M1 series.

I've never dared to go beyond ISO 3200........

Just picked it up. Box is correct items, will get it out when I get a chance over the next couple of days.

Yep me too. Soon as Auto iso came in I switched to it and carried on using it when i got my om1 mki and then mkii. Set the lowest shutter speed you will allow and let it do its thing with EC if needed. The Chough in flight i put up here at the weekend was iso12800 then cleaned up with dxo pure raw 5. That software is black magic. Its ridiculous.

I have no idea how you get so close, are you in a hide or invisible?
Nope just standing there quietly next to the bush watching . I do have a nice smile when required though. I’m also totally tone deaf so I can’t hear thirds I just work on a visual sighting of any birds . The only birds that are in my hearing range are blackbirds and pigeons
