Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

It’s the mk1 om5. It was a good price new and didn’t want to pay £600 more for usbc.

I often just use the Om-3 on a peak leash. I know carrying a camera on a neck strap isn’t fashionable these days, but I don’t envy people lugging 20kg backpacks!
I’ve only saved my tripod for the handful of times a year it may be used.
I've got 3 full-size tripods, which in my book is 3 too many.

Cotswold cameras are funny . If anyone else is thinking of using them. This is my experience so far.
Obviously miles cheaper than uk prices .
Ordering no problem on 16th oct in the evening.
Got confirmation email next day.
Ive bought from them before so knew its 1-2 weeks for delivery so wasnt bothered about no more comms.
Yesterday 21st October got an email saying lens is dispatched allow 1-2 days for tracking number . So i assumed thats dispatching from japan.
Today the person i live with found a box by my recycling bins. No notification from the courier. No knock at the door.
:O .

I dont think ive ordered anything else so pretty sure thats the 150-400 . Which is very nice in one way as ive just returned the hired lens back this morning but yeah. Bit of a dodgy ending. I think it was delivered by evri on behalf of dhl which would explain it i suppose.

I actually emailed them this morning and they said I could message them after ordering and arrange for it to be sent to a courier pick up point.
Will save the OH questioning another package.
Their price on the OM1 mk2 and 12-40 mk2 is making it hard to resist

Ordered a 100-400 mkii off them Sunday , my lads bought a few bits recently so I know the score re delivery.. and as stated they certainly show up u.k rip off prices

Be interested to see what you think on the OM1 Jeff.

It might sway my decision to upgrade the EM1X to the latest.

I have had a OM1 mki for a couple of years Terry the sale of the e.mix partly funded it , it’s never missed a beat in that time and is used a few times a week normally , I can’t in all honesty say a bad word against it , it’s lighter, faster, and just does its job .. there is currently a mkii version which according to reports is even better but not enough for me to warrant changing as yet .. if you want to try before you buy you know where I live mate ..
If you watch the latest Mike lane video where he compares one to a Nikon z6 it sums it up there right at the top of the game … ,
My lad has recently got back into the photo game and has been trying to settle into a niche ,so I have had the chance to use a canon , Sony and now Nikon z6 in recent weeks . On Sunday last we were shooting side by side so om1-300f4-1.4 tc - V- Nikon Z6 - 200-600 vr and in total honesty the shots were identical

Yeah I got my mkii from them, price was great.
So my parcel is the lens (still not received a tracking number yet lol). It’s a made in Vietnam one. Not sure what the hire lens was. Interestingly it says manufactured in oct 2024. That worried me a bit so watched an unboxing and it looks like everything is packaged the same so don’t think I’ve got a returns. Not a mark on it but what has pleased me the most is the zoom ring is much stiffer than the hired lens so maybe I won’t have such an issue with zoom being at wrong setting when doing a grab shot,

Cheers Jeff.

House move coming up but will try to squirrel a bit away ;-)

Wow so much has moved on since I was last here; OM1 mii, OM-3 and a monster OM 150-600! Me, I'm still with my EM1 MKIII and my 75-300mm

Nice to see some familiar names still here and still taking some wonderful photos.

Nowt wrong with your kit. welcome back.

Only got to test out (my own :O) 150-400mm in the garden at lunchtime. But happy with the results seems as sharp as the hired lens. I also tested is it better to crop in at 400mm or use the inbuilt TC on the Goldfinches. I cant work out as they look the same bar maybe the colour is nicer at 400mm bare. Either way they weren't close so the sharpness on both is really good imo.

Robin trying to hide in the shrubbery....@400mm and approx a 25% crop of the raw file and approx 5.9M distant.

Have you used any AI based sharpening software on that Robin. Reason for asking is that I have tried On1 2026 and get similar feather detail and was wondering if it's real or made up info, as it's so sharp on my photo.

Thanks

Yeah. Relief i didnt know i needed as from the comms i shouldnt have it yet… . I better not get too excited yet though. It could be a returns or something ive been sent. As its only been 6 days from ordering. Thats quick for them.
Peat, so even though Cotswold cameras on their website said the lens was out of stock, they still managed to get you one (and in double quick time) ?

Just had a shipping update from Cotswold , lens is at DHL depot Hong Kong ( phooey) should be here by 27th latest .. so far quite pleased with there service

I use DxO PhotoLab and finalise for outputting in Photoshop 6.

The heavy lifting is by PhotoLab and their "lens correction" profiles so no AI there. I do need to use noise reduction but IIRC I thought the setting with AI involved was too crispy in regard to details so IIRC used their Prime 3 setting at default levels.

But no other active sharpening as far as I recall.

I'm a new owner of a OM! mk2 so rather than buy a paper copy of the official manual I'm wondering whether to go for a user guide instead. Can anyone recommend one?

There's this one which is reasonably priced but doesn't have any reviews on Amazon -

https://www.amazon.co.uk/MASTERING-...9a-afb2-c4b38ed2c79a&pd_rd_i=B0FJ1VD83F&psc=1

I never had a user guide for my Mark 1 and I know it had features that I never used because i didn't know how to find them..... :(

Thanks for detailing, I have to try other photos to check out how realistic the AI sharpening is.

I think there is a wee bit more detail in the shot with the tc on Pete - both very good anyway as you say!

Very interested to see how you rate it next to the 300mm Jeff! I am kind of missing the zoom to be honest
that's the reason I bought it tbh mike , on sunday I was to close to a lot of things with no way to move back

Re: AI in post processing
DxO PL9 has added AI to its selective masking, that is IMO a bit of a game changer for DxO because AFAIK unlike On1 the use of the AI is simply(?) to allow exact masking selection to use the other non AI tools to enhance the area in question.

On1 on the other hand seem to major on AI doing just about all the work.

How did you get a code :O i could have done with one of them last week . Lol
Came up on a Google search, was only got an extra £20 lol.

I normally might have gone for the 12-45 f4, but for the extra £30 it seemed silly not to give the 12-40 f2.8 a go.

Does anyone know if OM Systems will still send you a paper manual for a new body if you ask nicely? I've emailed customer services but I may have to wait five days for a reply.

I had my answer today. here it is -

>Regarding your inquiry about obtaining a physical copy of the OM-1 Mark II manual, we regret to inform you that we no longer provide printed manuals as part of our company’s >Environmental Protection Policy.

>We fully understand the convenience of a physical manual when learning to use new equipment; however, in our effort to reduce waste, we now offer manuals in digital format.

I'm not convinced.....

I've had that a few times myself and I'm also wondering if the 300 is just maybe a bit more than I need as a pretty casual walkabout shooter... not sure to be honest so not going to rush anything
A zoom is so much more flexible than fixed focal length, even for wildlife.

Something that I've just been thinking about with the OM1 Mark 2 - Im assuming there's no way to use an off camera flash that doesn't involve a set of triggers?
ie there's not a setting in the camera menu to trigger a flash externally is there?

Don’t know if the OM-1 MK II still comes bundled with the tiny FL-LM3 flash that the earlier bodies did, but that is capable of acting as a trigger and is tiny.

Just been doing some focus bracketing macro in our wood.

What stacking software do you all prefer?

I see there's Zerene & Helicon available.

Any others that might be worth a try?

Don't think it does.

Shame as was quite a good gun for triggering.

Cheers both, mine didn't come with the tiny flash, but dont like an on board flash at all. I think I was hoping there would be some sort of internal trigger that could link to a compatible flash. I bet the tech exists but suppose it would ruin the market for triggers then lol.

I’m in Extremadura with my new OM1 mark ii that arrived the day before I left. I also have my OM1 mark i which until now has hosted my 150-400mm. I think I’ve set it up the same now, but I wondered if anyone can point me to a video to help with some of the new settings, or else advise. I’ve looked on YouTube and can’t seem to find what I want without having to watch many hours of videos…. And some people do a lot of chit chatting :ROFLMAO:

I’d like to be able to switch easily between the subject detection through most (or all) of frame and using a smaller chosen focus point and not subject detect. I was hoping to use the priority settings in the AF menu 2 but it doesn’t seem to be working as I expected. Please share your own set up or ideas if you do something similar.

I currently use back button AF, and have the two front custom buttons set to switch to C1 (birds in flight settings) and to turn the subject detection on and off. Perhaps these priorities don’t work with BBF?

I haven’t read the manual yet actually, so I will have to dig into that, but a good video would be helpful.
