Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

The flash and trigger should be fine then. Not sure how good the T685o will be but I've read about the Godox V350 that seems popular for macro
I used that for a while but the V350 will be better as it's less tall than the 685 so will shine more light on the subject.

I picked up a Nissin i40 for M4/3 from CEX for £38 and it's brilliant for macro.

Which diffuser are you using?

Just had a look around, as you do, and good nick OM-1s are now under £1000. That is absolutely incredible. I know what my next camera will be, just need to save up for a good long while!

Pix taken with OM D mkiii, 60mm macro , Godox V350 and cygnutech diffuser.Coming over from Canon I am really impressed with this set up, will have to try photo staking with this set up.

Not experienced exactly that but a couple of years ago I noticed that whenever I attached my Olympus 1.4x teleconverter to any of my lenses, it would go from auto focus to manual and sometimes lock the camera up (with a black rear screen and EVF). I thought I might have dropped or damaged the converter somehow (as it only happened with the converter attached), but then I noticed on closer examination that a few of the screws holding the mounting flange on the converter (the one that attaches to the camera body side), were loose and allowing a slight separation of the mount from the body of the converter. It was only slight but obviously enough for it to loose electrical contact. I replaced the screws with a little lock tight on the threads and it's been perfect ever since.

Might not be your issue but both checking ?

Thanks for the heads up :)

In the field I rotated each element of the mount in case it was a contact corrosion issue but that had no effect.

I will check the aspect that you mention especially as it does seem to be 'mechanical' in cause  due to the positional/movement affecting it?
By way of an update ...

I have now done my elimination tests:-
  1. Trying without the x1.4 TC i.e. the bare 300mm
  2. With my x2.0 TC
  3. Putting the x1.4 TC on my 40-150mm f2.8
Note ~ both bare lenses are OK as is the case with the x2.0 TC in use on both lenses.

Thus the conclusion is that the cause is the x1.4 TC

In the quiet (I think I heard it in the field too?) as I lift the combo from hip height to my eye there is a clunk noise which I surmise is the lens IS disengaging due to a poor connection that also 'shows itself' by the switching from C-AF to MF.

I have visually inspected the sprung connectors and they are all 'up'.
However my PH0 screwdriver which I thought was the size to fit does not and surmise I need to get a set of JIT screwdrivers.
Can anyone throw some light on the size I need?

I will try to find my iso-propyl kit, it is in a safe place

Having said all that, it may be best sending it in for a service though pretty sure it long out of warranty! I wonder what the cost will be?

A bit annoying overall as it is my most used TC

Camera is here

Don't get the 90mm macro till next week though, so it just looks pretty at the moment lol.

Do Olympus have an app like Lumix that you can link your phone and camera with to use as a remote trigger and such?

OM Image Share in the App Store

Quick question folks, is the OM 5year warranty worth the £129. I got my camera from Jessops and their 3 year warranty is the same price..
Who covers the warranty?
The OM one would be serviced & executed in the service centre in Portugal but where does Jessops get their servicing & warranty work done?
If the same location them IMO go with OM as you have will have direct contact but via Jessops you would have them as an intermediary

PS as for 'worth it' that is your choice :)

PPS when i bought my OM1 it had a 5 year warranty extension as a freebie :)

I will go for the OM one tomorrow then. It only arrived Saturday and I'll get my 90mm tomorrow, so can finally switch it on and check it all out :)

I got mine from Jessops as it was cheaper than the reduced OM direct one.

FWIW and maybe you know already.....

Don't forget to setup your https://my.omsystem.com/ account where you can register the kit and upload copies of your purchase receipt/ invoice :)

None too sure if OM still do it, but they Olympus and then OM, will upon registering the kit (body & lenses IIRC) add 6 months to the warranty and also IIRC you can enter the OM 5 year extension code and that will also register the extension against your body & its serial number.

This is what may account page says of my OM1

Warranty screenshot.jpg

I assume I just create a profile, add the camera serial numbers, then purchase the warranty and apply a code or something to the account?
Yes, you create and sign-in to your account and then 'Add a product'........if none added yet and though too long ago to recall I think was still the 'Add a product' click link to do so on the front page....on the whole I think it was fairly self explanatory.

Again, IIRC most of the time adding the serial number will correctly identify the item but sometimes it didn't so all the details have to be added manually.

Yes, re extended warranty.....as I recall (I once did buy a 3 year extended warranty when they were on offer) once the OM1 (in your case) is registered there is box to add the code provided and to link the extension to that serial number.

PS enjoy your new gear......I look forward to seeing your 90mm macro images :)

Having never used OMS's (or the old Olympus) repair facilities before, I was wondering if someone could answer the questions below please ?

My OM-1 is now just over 2 years old and I *think* the cameras IBIS system isn't working as well as when I got it. I can now see visible shaking in the viewfinder when composing images that wasn't there before, and the IBIS seems to be quiet a bit louder than before (an external mic can still pick it up).

As the body is still in Warranty until Feb 2027, I'm thinking of getting it sent in for service / repair. I only have the Pro-Service Standard Plus cover which doesn't include the free yearly service, so if it's just a service it needs I'd need to pay for this.

Does anyone have any experience of the European service centre (I believe they may be in Portugal), recently and can advise, how good the service centre is and namely typical turn around times, communications and if they do charge for a service, how much typically they charge for this please ?

In your shoes I would send it in as a warranty claim, as you have identified a discernable issue

When I sent my 12-40 f2.8 MK2 in for a zoom action stuff/sticky they did replace a component and serviced it.

IIRC it took a total of 5 days turnaround.

I don't recall any negative criticism of the Portuguese service centres "service".

PS I need to send in my out of warranty MC 14 teleconverter, I need it to be repaired but surmise they will quote the cost to get my authorisation to do it.

Cheers bud - appreciated.

Got my lens

Now charging up as the battery is dead.

I have created an OM profile and registered both the products (2.5 years warranty on each is good) and I may get the 5 year warranty also.

Wex Birmingham gave me a discount on the lens so I have saved a decent amount over the direct OM kit offer for the OM 1 Mki and 90 mm macro. I have also just registered for my £200 cash back (no idea what my swift number is so went with the closest branch in Birmingham as it only gave me BHAM / London options).

Will have a play and look through the menu later.

Woop woop

Okay, so battery charged and had a little go out the back, no flash and not a fat lot of light. Flicked the lens into Macro S mode and handheld, tried out the focus braketing and the one where the camera produces a jpeg all in elec shutter (took 283 images in about 5 minutes - that's going to take a bit of getting used to). This camera is on a different level to the lumix FF ones for this type of stuff.

I have only messed around like I said but a couple of images using the available natural light (small jpegs). Not perfect but for a quick 5 minutes, all handheld, I am pretty impressed. Going to have a lot of fun with this camera I think.

Yes, I am just messing around with the settings but I can see me having a lot of fun with this. I will need to get the flash out and my diffuser to get into it properly but just spending a few minutes messing around with everything points to fun times ahead all being well.

Hello all. Quick question regarding the high resolution shooting mode on the E-M1 Mk3.
I'm thinking this is great for landscapes where there is minimal movement within the frame, but can it be used for long exposure seascape photography also, or, can it be used in conjunction with the live ND feature?

Thanks.

Sorry, probably a daft question. If I update the firmware on my OM 1 Mki to the latest version, do I have to update it to the older versions first and update them in order? Asking as the video suggests you have to? I will have to download this on system workspace software also by the looks of it...bit different to the Lumix updates where you just download the file to SD and update in camera.

I am curious, what video are you referring to and what version firmware are you on now?

Have you seen this page?

In the past (I think with the E-M1 mk2 there was one particular significant update that required the current version to be a specific one, therefore the update via Workspace was more protracted as it did an interim update....then the major one.

Fast forward to 'now' IIRC the OM1 via Workspace update will simply offer you the most current version. NB you cannot go backwards once done, the update is the update!

There is also the method using the phone app.

Here is Dave Smiths video about how to use the App
View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s55tO-sYZ7Q

I have no idea why it is not 'official' because I like many others have updated via the mobile App and for me the process was a bit more reassuring than the WS method. Indeed IIRC there used to be a page on the website that explicitly dealt with the App method.......thought that might have been in the Olympus days

No it updates over previous ones , the best method is to update via a smartphone as there is far less chance of of a problem happening
