Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

If they're the same price, the em10 has an evf.

The ep7 I picked up with the kit lens for £550 from OM system, which was considerably less than the om10. So if they're the same price, the em10 is probably the slightly better bet overall, and it's still super small. :) others will have their opinion.
Looking on the OM site there is a silver (ISH) colour EP7 with kit lens for £549 and the om 10 MK4 with kit lens is £749.

Is the EVF worth the extra..

In hard sunlight, yes... Sadly. And I say that as someone who hardly ever uses it. On Sunday, I missed the evf because it was so sunny.

That said, when I did have an evf, I used it perhaps 5 percent of the time. It's really such a personal preference. I may just get an em10 or em5 at some point for that, but it's not affordable right now.

You can buy a flash mount evf that fits most of the e.pl series bodies . Does bring the cost up a tad but a neat bit of kit that goes from horizontal to vertical .

So my update to my 14-42pz pancake lens came today, its the 12-45mm f4. Looks a great lens! So now I have the 12-45mm, 9-18mm and the 50-150mm.

I'm looking for a camera bag now. I have a massive F Stop backpack that houses my full frame DSLR, 3 pro lenses, filters etc but it's proper overkill for the m43 set up I have.

Im looking for a bag that will house the camera body, 3 lenses, filters and batteries etc, drone, and maybe a bit of room for clothing, water and snacks.

The kicker is the tripod, my smallest tripod is the Benro TMA38CL and some of the bags I've seen don't look up to transporting that on the side. Can I ask please what camera bags everyone is using, in case there's a bag I've overlooked and suitable.

I could use my F Stop and change the insert to a smaller one but the whole point of getting the m43 set up was weight and size so I don't really want to use that bag.

What camera Gareth?
Are you sure you need a tripod?

This was shot handheld at 0.8 sec because I was being lazy

Sorry Alf, I have the OM-D E-M1 Mark iii

For my seascapes I use nd64 and nd1000 filters so I'd be pushing holding them still and sharp!

I have the same body, in my bag is a 60mm macro, 14-40 2.8 and a 300 f4. I bought a Manfrotto rucksack ( can’t remember the model but you are welcome to see it and see if it fits your gear, I’m only in Taffs Well) pm me if you dooff WEX, fits it a treat as well as few bits n bobs, it also came with a free gorilla pod. IIRC I paid about £65

For seascapes I use an old cheap tripod due to corrosion (all the fixings were rusting on my carbon fibre tripod) I have an old Slik tripod again for this

I have a 22l Lowepro Photo hatchback that I can get more than that in if fact I can get both my E-M1ii in and the 8-25mm f4.0, 12-40 f2.8 and at a push the 40-150mm f2.8 plus filter holders etc

The Lowepro flipside is a newer version of what I have but looks better for open up when where it

My main backpack after having owned and used several well known named ones , is a cheap Chinese one from e.bay cost me all of £15 used BUT it takes my camera and a few lenses ,has a waterproof cover in the base ,and will take a full sized tripod/ monopod on the rear if needed . The beauty of MFT is that you don’t need a heavy padded bag.
Think and look outside the box

Thanks all, after lots of research I've bought the Vanguard Veo active 42.

It has hints of Shimoda designs and will allow me to carry the m43 system, filters etc and the drone in the main compartment with room up top for clothes and food. There is a water reservoir pocket on the one side and a charging pocket on the other side. Tripod can be placed to the side, or on the front. It gets here Sunday so we'll see what it's like, coming from Amazon.

Nigel, always up for a meet up and shoot, maybe we need to organise a South Wales meet up?

First attempt at birds with the EM10ii and Lumix 45-150, taken in the garden, I think the images look better from the EM10 than they did from my Panny G5? or maybe thats just my eyes lol.

A couple from the beach a few days ago. We’ve had a week in Norfolk and I took my LUMIX S1R and Sigma lenses as well as my OM1. Due to size and the IBIS making a tripod less critical I exclusively used the OM1 and to be fair I haven’t regretted it once.

That is some stunning light, lovely pictures!

A question. I had an original OMD-EM1, and while it felt lovely to use it was too menu based for me - I like knobs and dials so now have a fuji XT-5.
However, I have just started to take an interest in macro-type as well as fast moving subjects, such as grass-track racing and birds etc, and I keep on hearing just how good the new OM system cameras are.
So, any owners who have upgraded from the early OM1 or just owners of an OM System cameras care to tell me why I should think more seriously about buying something, especially given my dislike of menus/love of knobs and dials..?

Just to clarify, I've edited the camera model following a reply by @alfbranch .

Do you mean you had an E-M1 and would like to know how the OM-1 compares?

I've been given the green light by the wife to get a new camera for my macro photography. I have to part with some older FF gear as part of the deal, but does anyone here use OM for macro as they seem to be the better / more popular option? Funny as I have been looking at the OM system for a little travel camera also.

I currently use my Lumix S1 and either a sigma 105 or the laowa 2.5 - 5 X manual lenses.

I'd be considering the 60mm or if I can get enough funds then 90mm Oly lens. I'm heading to wex later to have a look at the OM cameras there.

Is there a lot of difference between the OM 1 Mki and the OM 1 Mkii? The reason I ask is going direct to OM you can get the OM 1 Mki with the 90mm macro for the same price as just the body of the OM1 Mkii.

I would go for the OM1 and 90 Adam .. any improvements between the two tend to be biased towards improvements that don’t affect macro . You could also get MF adaptors for your current lenses . But by all accounts the 90mm is a stunner and remember that equates to 180 mm FF plus you have an inbuilt in camera 2x digital t.c that works extremely well even for birding.

Yes, sorry for not making it clearer.
I had the original Olympus OMD-EM1 digital that came out around 15 years ago (this one - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Olympus-OM-D-M1-Fluorescent-Candlelight-Black/dp/B00EQ07PG2) and am now just wondering what the OM Systems OM1 mk1 or 2 feel like to use, especially re menus.
Obviously it'll be a way more modern camera with all that brings!

I guess any comparisons to APSC such as a Fuji XT-5 would be interesting as I gather that M4/3's are fairly close in image quality now.

Thanks for any advice and wisdom...

It appears the OM mk1 with the 90 mm is back order on OM site - not sure how long or anything as it also states immediately available lol.

I can however order the OM 1 Mk1 and the 60mm Macro for around £1850 and that is available.

OM mk2 with the 60 mm is £2648 from OM or £2198 from WEX

The OM1 comes with a new updated menu system and is dead easy to navigate compared to the old style system .. the updated sensor is ultra fast to focus and I find the bird I.d is very accurate and even works on insects I.e bees, flies dragonflies in flight . .the e.v.f is fully adjustable to .basically you can set the camera to suit your own shooting style and needs plus its ultra light without feeling cheap

Had a photo outing to Thursley Common with some fellow photographers....sadly poor to no-shows of anything of interest. But nice pub lunch :)

But oddly my OM1 with 300 & 1.4tc attached was misbehaving:(

It was fine last time out....
It would randomly switch by itself from C-AF to MF and no the MF clutch was not the reason. I even disabled the MF clutch in the menu to be sure.

When hanging down it was fine but when brought up to my eye it was on MF. A gentle shake I found could trigger the effect .......but not every time.

Using the top plate switch for setting the Focus type MF was locked i.e. could not shift it.

It was semi reproducible so will try without the TC and also my 40-150 f2.8 to see if it does the same.

At this stage no clear if lens only or both lens and body involved.

As I say it fine before today including when I was checking settings last night in readiness for the walk.

I wonder if anyone else has experienced this oddity?

Not experienced exactly that but a couple of years ago I noticed that whenever I attached my Olympus 1.4x teleconverter to any of my lenses, it would go from auto focus to manual and sometimes lock the camera up (with a black rear screen and EVF). I thought I might have dropped or damaged the converter somehow (as it only happened with the converter attached), but then I noticed on closer examination that a few of the screws holding the mounting flange on the converter (the one that attaches to the camera body side), were loose and allowing a slight separation of the mount from the body of the converter. It was only slight but obviously enough for it to loose electrical contact. I replaced the screws with a little lock tight on the threads and it's been perfect ever since.

Might not be your issue but both checking ?

Thanks for the heads up :)

In the field I rotated each element of the mount in case it was a contact corrosion issue but that had no effect.

I will check the aspect that you mention especially as it does seem to be 'mechanical' in cause  due to the positional/movement affecting it?

Well I have ordered the OM 1 Mk1 and the 90 mm Macro lens having had a play with them at Wex this afternoon.

Just need to decide what to get rid of now to make way for it.

I assume (may be incorrectly) that my Godox flash T685 something and the Godox trigger I have will work on this as they were olympus / panasonic fit (I used them on my M43rds and FF lumix stuff).

If only but I can't afford the body parts I would have to sell

IIRC 3 of the other guys in the group have the big white and out the 7 of us only one doesn't use Olympus/OM

If the flash has a O at the end of the numbers no probs if not use the trigger of get a flm3 to trigger it as a slave.
