Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

Good morning all,

I’m looking for a bit of advice. I have been a Canon user for 22 years and I’m now at the stage where I am not shooting as much and when I am its no longer me on my own on trips i.e. the trips are multi faceted rather than just for photography.

I mainly shoot wildlife but also do some landscape too. I currently have a 1DXII and 500mm f4 IS as my main wildlife body/lens combo and I use an RP for general stuff.

The lens is no longer supported by Canon and with Canon moving to the RF mount my concern is that if something does go awry with the 500 I can’t afford to replace it and in time all of my other EF glass will be deemed by Canon as obsolete.

I’ve been doing some research into m43 and Olympus in particular. I am attracted to the compactness of the 300mm and I’m seriously considering selling my Canon kit and switching to Olympus. I’m not 100% sure yet so my plan is to get an E-M1X (I have big hands) and 300mm initially and if I am happy with the system then add a 12-40 and 40-150 over time then upgrade the body to whatever is available in a few years if I feel I need to.

Has anyone done anything similar and have any regrets?

Are there any good, cheaper lenses from 14-150/200mm for me to consider to tide me over before I make the full switch to the Pro lenses?

Many thanks to all. I’ve been following this thread for a few weeks and the quality of what I am seeing produced is pushing me to make the switch. I know that the quality is down to the photographer but some of my concerns about increased depth of field etc have been put to bed.

Neil
I was a canon man since 2003 . Using the 500mm f4 for the majority of that time. I went m43 about 3-4 years ago as i just couldnt be doing with the weight as i prefer walking and taking wildlife photos so weight was a big issue.
ive used the 100-400 lenses since going m43 but the big improvement for me was getting the om1 . The difference that has made in the shots i can get now has been the biggest jump in all my time as a wildlife photographer. So now i really do not miss my canon gear at all (i did a bit at the start) .
The added bonus now is the new om 90mm macro easily replaces my canon 100mm macro. So that hole is filled as well now

Sorry spamming the group a bit but has anyone else used the new ai denoise tool on light room ?! Holyyy cow its good . I normally use topaz denoise but an seriously impressed by lrs ai tool . Ill post up a before and after later on

Please peat if you could post I havnt had chance to process any photos yet will be good to see my intention is to try and get up to the local woods with both EM1X and OM1 and take some bird shots at iso 6400 then process to see how both files from each camera perform Hopefully Lightroom will keep improving the denoise function so much so that my Topaz will become redundant

I just quickly found a photo i hadnt edited yet (and probably wont) but its iso2500. I just applied the default AI denoise at 50. This is at zoom 50%.
This is a screen grab from lightroom so the quality is probably a bit sus but you can see the noise reduction I think.

Edit: I cant see to upload the full size image. :| its showing as very small on my screen and i cant click it to see the full image. Hopefully it works for you. (hmm the upload seems to have reduced the file size from 700kb to 71kb..... so I dont think its going to show properly)

That does look impressive

If om did a 400mm pro f4.5 or something i would be all over that .
.... They already do : 150-400mm TC F/4.5 Pro with built in 1.25x but looong waiting list and about £6.5K. Absolutely worth it IMO after just under 3 years of constant use in all conditions.

Wow, three years! It only seems like yesterday.

Great to hear you are still loving it, I "make do" with the 300mm :D

What really pi$$es me off about Oms is that all their paid pros review the lens and giving it top marks yet you cannot get the damned thing even if you have the money!!
How about a bit of focus on those lenses that are available and affordable?
end of rant

.... I found both the build quality and the image quality of the 300mm F/4 Pro faultless but for the subjects I shoot I prefer the flexibility of a zoom. I got some decent images from my 100-400mm but never liked its handling. So selling both lenses plus an E-M1X helped towards paying for the 150-400mm TC Pro. I had pre-ordered it early, always knowing I could return it after a few days if I didn't like it when it eventually came. I use it more than any other lens but my 40-150mm F/2.8 Pro is a close second.

Three years this July, so not quite. But you're right - It still only feels like yesterday.

..... OMD irritate me with the sheer volume of emails marketing their other lenses, often with generous discounts.

It's not just the pros reviewing this lens who give it top marks but 99%, if not 100% of users. Btw, OM Ambassadors do not get paid but they do get opportunities which they are obviously grateful for. Nonetheless, OMD have simply not been able to meet the demand for supply when logically they should have.

I was looking through my early shots on the lens today and don't think I have ever posted these ones - Both with MC-14 mounted :

.... Such natural looking colours and great compositions.

And how pretty is Molly!!

Cheers Robin,

She's settling in well. Only got her from the rescue centre in late December.

Romanian street dog.

Coming on in leaps and bounds.

Loving being back with Olympus too.
.... My daughter bought a Romanian rescue dog - Nervous at first but gradually settling in too.

Absolute faith in the Olympus weather sealing.
Camera got very wet and extremely cold. Faultless

.... Nice one!

I know exactly what you mean - If you are a photographer who shoots outdoors in all weathers all year round, the OM Pro weathersealing is so enabling and gives great peace of mind. The other brands don't seem to have caught up to the same extent yet.

I wouldn’t agree with that statement, My canon 500mm f4 was an utter tank 20 years ago. I don’t think I ever saw dust inside it and it felt like it could be completely submerged and would still work. I put that lens through all sorts of weather but tbf it was built like a tank and weighed the same as a tank so it makes sense.
My back is very happy I switched to m43!

Today I thought I'd try an experiment.

Is it possible to take 4 80MP images with my EM1 MK2 and create a panorama in Lightroom?

Would it work? Would the pc give up? What would the resulting megapixel size be and above all, would it be a sharp image?

Well.....................

Turns out it works superbly, even if the old pc struggled a bit.

211MB image and sharp as a tack all over.

Shame you can't zoom in too much on the Flickr image.
