Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

I can see some resemblance but I thought it too big and all the time I was there I never heard any chiffchaffing :)

Reed Warbler supercilium does not extend behind the eye. Also the general shape is of a leaf warbler (Phylloscopus) rather than a reed (Acrocephalus) type. At a pinch it might be Willow but the dark legs mitigate against that.

For people who struggle with bird ID or who just want to improve, I can recommend the Merlin App from Cornell University. It's free and can do IDs for much of the world from photographs (or sound), using AI. It's not always bang right but usually the correct ID is one of the first three listed. Some nice photos on it too - they try to have both sexes/all plumages.

The Merlin app is a crackingly good app, even better latterly as it now incorporated Sound ID :)

Thanks for the detailed description, I had to Google supercilium, you learn something new everyday :). I already have the Merlin app recommended by @Box Brownie a few years back :)

Alby how are you getting on with the 60mm f2.8 on the OM1 its a lens I never got on with.
Does the AF work at all?
Im not a fan really Alf but I am trying to persevere with it as I do like the handheld focus stacking feature with the om-1 which need the olympus lens to function.
Autofocus is quite snappy and it isn't a bad lens as a general 120mm telephoto. Just have to remember to get that little switch in the correct position. lol

The sound ID is amazingly good. A couple of times in Canada we were trying to identify a bird by call, switched the sound ID to listen... and got a list of the four or five birds it could hear singing! Photo ID works even by taking a picture of a bird displayed on a computer screen or in a magazine.

The Merlin team are also very helpful - we went to Thailand early in 2019 - there is no Thailand Bird Pack listed, but got in touch with the Merlin team and they sent us a link to download their beta test version, which was very useful.

I knew about the sound id but I didn't realise it did photo id. Trying it now it gave me three options on the above bird, ChiffChaff, Willow Warbler or Dusky Warbler, seems dusky warbler is rare so its a chiffchaff or Willow warbler.

Hi, please forgive me for barging in here with my "old iron" OLYMPUS Pen E-P1 - PANASONIC Lumix 1,7/20 ...

I use my old Pen daily on my dog walks. The shutter sound is nice and I like handling the metal body. ---

Last Sunday I took it to a U.S. car meeting. The IQ is quite good, for an 12MP camera, I think ... :

o.k not up to normal standards ,BUT a photo of a black winged stilt and chick taken yesterday in Cheshire . very distant viewing position plus heat haze combined to make them a difficult target . and it took the power of topaz to even get a useable image . Lifer for me hope this is the start of a influx of these birds

.... That's a Field Grasshopper adult.

Over the last week I have taken over 1,000 photos of grasshoppers near my house and haven't had to hit the deck for any of them. Because, like you Jeff @the black fox, getting back up at 75yo is tricky. I haven't even needed to get on my knees.

Quatermass?

Robin old chap I spotted this/these hopping around my feet while out taking the black winged stilts ,it was just a case of waiting till one was in the correct position .. and have you never seen the film “quatermass and the pit “ I do realise you live in the wilderness but surely you must have seen it being ancient
.... No, I have never seen 'Quatermass and the pit'. If it's that old I was probably still at school and isolated from the rest of society.

Google it or u.tube ?

I should of stayed with Fuji + Sony, as for me I really do miss the Fuji colours so a new X-T3 with the XF 18-55mm arrives Tuesday.
Plus the Fuji weight is fine with me.
Cool, got to do what's right for you (y). I actually prefer Sony colours these days, but with the color fidelity profile. Sony colour profiles aren't great imo.

I will never leave Sony, but wanted a great second system and for me it is the Fuji. So will sell the olly lot on once I sort a price out and not silly cheap either lol

Probably strictly speaking not a family as they are all adults....... :)
Next time I see them ,I’ll gather some poo for a DNA test … hope that puts your mind at rest LOL

Quick question for OM-1 owners - getting the EVF to show what the actual exposure is, rather than an enhanced versions, that makes my Manual captures under or over exposed.

That is what the Histogram is for, isn't it;)

if its like the mkiii you have to turn off your actual view and let the camera do it , I have taken perfectly exposed shots at night but I forget how ?
