Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

FWIW I have On1 2018 and the upgrade is £83......I have hardly used On1 2018 so for now an upgrade is not on my horizon especially as I have Topaz Gigapixel, Sharpen & DeNoise AI if required for any extra 'work' on any files....Sharpen AI is my go to for a PP sharpening tool as/if necessary.

Whether the PP software landscape will influence any needs on my part, I will just have to wait and see ;)

This one was taken on 26th April. We had the pleasure of watching the first of the years brood developing from our kitchen window.....photographed through the double glazing

This pair fledged successfully though we think only one survived. FWIW the they very quickly laid a second brood though the ivy had since grown to cover the view of the nest, this second brood we think had 3 fledge but we are not too sure as our garden means they hide from view very well indeed...

However, here is 'Down the hatch'
_4261308_DxO_Female Blackbird.jpg

PS as usual.....PL5 > PS > jpeg ;) Oh, this approx a 25 to 30% crop of the full frame.

PPS as per the Red Kite image OM-1 & 40-150mm f2.8 plus x2 TC

Edit ~ forgot to add, approx 15 from kitchen window to the nest and has been such a privilege to see it all and to know that both broods successfully fledged and AFAIK 3 off now juveniles somewhere abouts.

Edit #2 ~ yes, there are 3 juvenile ones as we had the wonderful sight the day before yesterday of all three on the side patio area mooching around and still being fed the odd morsel or two by the male.................the female nowhere to be seen? Perhaps a third brood on the go somewhere else nearby???

That is expensive! My Topaz is now out of date and I had an offer come through on On1 and I was curious about the noise reduction which works on jpegs. I think it was around £50. On1 do honour their money back guarantee as I did get my money back years ago when I decided it wasn’t for me. Not sure if the same is true of upgrades.

How lovely to watch your blackbirds. I’ve seen quite a few juveniles being fed near my feeder but I’ve no idea where their nests are.

Very impressed by the OM-1 with some more flight shots. This Emperor Dragonfly was flying (not hovering) and coming towards me so for it to be able to focus on it in the first place was good especially with a busy background and it doesn't actually have subject detection for Dragonflies (I was using birds) but to then track it long enough to get nice shots. Just amazing. AF of this level on Dragonflies is what you see the Sony A1 doing and that's like 3 times the price.

There were also Sand Martins flying past extremely quickly so for a laugh I had a go at them as well (for the last 20 years of taking photos I wouldn't even consider it). I got a few I was happy with. Bit of a crop but still gobsmacked the OM-1 can track them long enough to get a shot.

Can I please ask about your settings.

On the surmise C-AF.....
Bird AI ?
Release Priority or not?
AF target area size?

I was getting swallows in flight last week with the mkiii + oly 100-400 so yep sand Martins are acheivable

I own the Voigtlander 50mm f2 APO-Lanthar, is there a adapter on the market that I could get for my OM-DE-M5 III as would love to try out the lens on my camera ?
Adaptors for most mounts are available try SRS microsystems first then e.bay … you’ll have fun focus stacking with that 60mm macro lens to

Thanks Jeff I look forward to getting the 60mm as will be stuck in doors from Thursday for a while.
Thanks too about the adapters.

No problem , that’s one of the main benefits of MFT , I have adaptors for my Nikon 300mm f4 lens , and the best one is a MMF 2 for my four thirds lenses which AF nicely and reduce price of pro lenses to a pension level .. there are as I said adaptors for most lens mounts available but as they will be MF only so my advise is assign a button to focus peaking and learn how to use it I find it’s really good and better than any previous types I have used..
In your case why not see if there’s a Sony to MFT adaptor might allow you to keep some obviously good lenses you already own the 85 and 135 sticking out as desirables

.... Well this is just my opinion from having used ON1 earlier versions (2018) as secondary software for finishing after Capture One which I have used for years (and I still don't use layers or brushes etc etc). ON1 RAW 2021 was a big step up but ON1 Photo RAW 2022 is a really big step forwards and includes both NoNoise AI and Resize AI 2022 integrated inside it and which knock anything Topaz is offering out of the court.

I have an order for one of my surfer photos at A2 size - ON1 Resize AI 2022 uses superior technology than Topaz Gigapixel - But explaining that is a subject in itself.

Since using ON1 2022 I have very very rarely needed to do any extra sharpening although most of that is due to top notch Olympus OM PRO lenses.

I have now uninstalled Adobe Photoshop which I have no use for and Affinity Publisher has replaced Adobe InDesign. Affinity Photo is good when manual Focus Stacking is needed if handheld Olympus onboard combining didn't complete.

Next day or so an order will go in for the Olympus M 60mm f2.8 macro lens, look forward to having macro fun again.
.... Be aware that it is tricky to master. But it is as sharp as a Samurai warrior's blade!

This may help :

Chris McGinnis is an excellent macro photographer IMO.

Yes I wouldn’t rush into anything and as Jeff says, you may be able to adapt some of your current lenses.
.... Metabones make the best lens adapters and with the least number of OEM brand features becoming compromised.

For example, when I mounted my Canon EF 100mm F/2.8L IS Macro on my Olympus M1X via Metabones Adapter the only feature compromised was Focus Stacking, nothing else.

I am always lazy about selling things and still have my Metabones for Canon and my Canon Macro lens + Kenko 1.4x < Hmm, food for thought to try it on my OM-1 but it still won't offer me Focus Stacking.

Thanks for your insights.

Do I read it that you use C1 for the raw conversion step with the Olympus bodies..... I would welcome knowing what is your workflow from that point on?

.... Yes, C1 is and always has been my RAW converter - I have never used Lightroom. Both for Canon and Olympus although I had to wait for the OM-1 to be supported but not for long.

My current workflow is Cull in FastRawViewer > C1 RAW conversion of selected images > Adjustments in C1 but no cropping > Edit as TIFF in ON1 RAW 2022 > ON1 NoNoise AI > Crop > Apply my own presets > Sometimes tweak in Luminar AI as ON1 plug-in > ON1 Resized AI and automatically Saved back to C1 as TIFF > Export from C1 as JPEG.

I don't faff around with brushes or layers - If I don't get it good enough in camera and with global settings it's not worth spending time on.

……if I can ask a daft question. Why do you not use ON1 as a raw convertor? Would that not simplify the process? Sorry if it’s a daft question but I am looking for a simple one stop shop program as I hate pp. TIA

Thanks for that Robin, will have a read through it my new 60mm arrives on Friday so plenty of time to master it for when I get back out again.

I am feeling I should give ON1 2022 a more serious look!! I also 'jump' from software programmes, ie dxo pl5 to c1 and I am interested to see if ON1 could offer a one stop solution? I do like how both dxo and capture 1 render ORF raw files, but is ON1 can be a serious competitor that is interesting. What I would say about ON1 is that they do offer a lot of tutorials and help with the programme, I just wish it was slightly more intuitive for me, but perhaps that is practice?

.... Not a daft question at all and it's one I have occasionally asked myself but it's only ON1's latest 2022 version which is possibly a rival to Capture One's longstanding reputation as being possibly the best RAW conversion engine on the market. I saw some comparitive tests with Lightroom a while ago and it was a no-brainer.

Capture One is Phase One's RAW conversion and editing software < Need I say more? Only if you are unfamiliar with Phase One medium format cameras which are extremely high quality.

I am also used to Capture One's catalogue and sessions structure and prefer its interface.

One thing I really dislike about ON1 is their incessant marketing emails but the problem is that unsubscribing cuts you off the stuff you want - Same as Olympus OMS do.

I'm trying to update my M1 mk11 firmware to version 3.6, all I am getting is the following message:

The operations of the application are limited.
To use these functions, you need to display the Security & Privacy settings in the system environment settings and allow loading from "Olympus Corporation", which is blocked.

After closing this notification, if I click "Next", the application then reports:
Failed to communicate with the camera

Olympus already seems to be allowing access Under System Preferences / Security & Privacy / Privacy

Any ideas of how to update in a simple fashion

Are you using Olympus workspace?

Yes, I think it's the Apple M1 silicon thats blocking the application. I previously updated to version 3.5 with no issues and have the OM Updater but this is no longer used by OM Corp.

I just don't know how to force the apple M1 to accept Workspace update section of app, it accepts Workspace but not the updater. I reckon that it's an Olly thing as new Workspace app is issued by the new OM company.

That all sounds terribly complicated......

Apparently OMsystems updater does NOT like working with Apple products .. I have seen mention of a work round but not sure how it works .. just another thing they need to sort out and quickly to
