Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

Although I have some top Nikon kit, I love using my Olympus kit too. The OMD-EM1Mk2 is great for pretty much everything, but I also love the EM10Mk3 for it's smallness and lightness, a great street camera but also something to carry round when you don't want to be encumbered. So here are some unedited grabs with it from a short visit to Northern Ireland last week:

Thanks. Funnily enough I had come to the same conclusion today. As another attempt shooting birds even ones sitting on branches had a poor keeper rate and worst of all my bridge camera Sony rx10iv could get way more birds in flight keepers then my om1 and pany 100-400 combo.

Your comment has put the nail in the coffin for the pany lens.
That's three of us come to the same conclusion about the same thing on the same day! :wacky:

I need to learn this new system but today I really loved it, a quick shot with the OMD 5 III + M12-40mm f2.8. Straight Sooc.
There is so much functionality packed into these cameras, it can take a while to try everything out. The menus can take a bit of getting used to as well, but it’s all good fun.

Enjoy it!

I’ve finally received notice that the OM1 is in stock, so I should receive it tomorrow  It’s been a very long wait!

Sadly I’m on crutches until the middle of July at least, so it will be hard to try it out.

Not liking the post because you're on crutches, obviously........ but glad to hear that supplies of the OM1 are starting to come in. I'm waiting till HDW have them...........

Thanks Bebop, once I get my head round it all I will use it more then I might think about getting rid of one of my Sonys.

And me but not at a inflated price

I did try that and bought a G9 sent it back after a very frustrating week , got to used to the bells and whistles on a mk2 and mkiii
Well that's a point - I came from a G7 which I never really enjoyed using, and now have the E-M1 Mk2 which I much prefer. If money were no object I'd just upgrade to the OM-1 and the Oly lens, but that's all a bit spendy :D

Yeh! pleased to hear that yours is on the way. Elsewhere I saw mentioned that WEX had been fulfilling a few orders....I know my brother ordered from them but he has yet to hear

Sorry to hear that you are suffering.....no doubt you will find/see some subjects in the garden to shoot from a chair with drink nearby ;) That way you can get used to it and setup it up "your way" :)

If anyone is thinking of buying from the Olympus shop this is a 10% discount Code which worked for me when I just ordered a 100- 400 zoom from them!

I don't know if it will work for anyone else but it might be worth a try.

I seem to remember reading it was for lenses only and the 150-400 zoom wasn't eligible!

Sold my E-M1 ii, much prefer the G9 in almost every aspect especially the evf and menu.
Another bonus is grips that stay stuck and in camera charging can come in handy.

All very subjective, but Olympus cameras don't do it for me (like their lenses though especially the 12-100)

I'm in exactly the same position - got the Pany 100-400 just before Olympus released theirs and my keeper rate has always been disappointing. It might be cheaper to change the camera for a Pany rather than the lens, but sounds like I need to change one or the other!
Well I will soon be able to give you another hands on experience as my oly 100-400 has been shipped today so I should have it by the weekend

:O how much did you get it for ?

£989.10.

I phoned HDEW as well, they didn't have it in stock but said their last price was £999 and the next batch (when it arrived!) would probably be a bit more expensive.

All the official retailers had it for £1099 (as you probably know). There's competition for you.......

Make sure camera firmware is up to date

re: DxO PL5 new update v5.3

Though I have not updated yet myself but v5/3 was released this afternoon and it has full OM-1 & Lens modules support ~ Phew, at last :D

Right, off to download and update as needed :)

The update pdf
Oh that’s perfect timing for me :D

I will need help getting camera and me in situ although I could lie on the sofa with the patio windows open. Just need Mr. Bebop to attend to my needs :D

Windows need a good clean too and that isn’t going to happen anytime soon.

.... You can let Mr Bebop peel you grapes after he has cleaned the windows :ROFLMAO:

Sorry to hear of your predicament and wishing you a speedy recovery.

As already answered, Peak Design. And a wonderful lens… :p

Now there’s an idea :ROFLMAO: Poor man. Mind you he’s able to enjoy the Isle of Wight Festival this weekend whilst I’m at home, so I don’t feel too sorry for him!

Thank you. It has not been as straightforward as I hoped, but I will get there. I’m trying not to think of all the missed photo opportunities.

I was able to lie on sofa with patio doors open yesterday with 300mm attached. I’ve not yet downloaded the pics, but I must say, first impressions of using bird detect are very good!! EVF seems amazing. The menu change doesn’t look as daunting as I expected. I think I’m going to miss having a charger though.

.... My OM double charger arrived on Wednesday but without the battery included in the pre-order deal yet - It will follow when in stock.

I know you can buy cheaper third-party chargers but the OM one is really nice and has 50% > 80% > 100% progress lights on each bay. No cable included - You use the OM supplied with the camera. Personally I always prefer the peace of mind which comes with a same brand purpose-built product.

I find Bird Detect very good indeed but as with all AI features in any camera, it's not 100% in every single circumstance.

You'll soon forget how the previous Menu works and IMO it's an improvement.

There is always the worry of fire with batteries/chargers, although I have bought USB 3rd party chargers in the past when wanting to travel light.

I remember you mentioning that deal, but I couldn’t see it when I looked. I think I will end up buying one.

I still have my EM1iii, so switching between menus is not ideal, but I’ve already started populating the My menus, so hopefully it won’t be too tricky.

In regard to the dual charger, I am with @RedRobin on this.... OEM as per the batteries for me.

Re: the cable ~ I have set aside the one that came with the camera for use only with data usage purposes. I bought a PD (Power Delivery) grade USB-C to USB-C cable just for use with the charger.

My reason(ing) was that the more the OEM cable gets used, as it would with charging, the more chance of it getting damaged and it is darned expensive to replace.

I would need to check but I think the cable is Ugreen brand.

.... And the batteries are expensive and I believe most have electronic chips in them designed to communicate and work efficiently with their matching OEM camera bodies. Buy third-party brands and IF a problem happens with either the battery or more importantly the camera body, then your warranty claim is screwed. Surely it's a no-brainer.

The OM Charger + 1 Free Battery deal was on early pre-orders. I'm one of guys who, once I have established that I trust a brand, I am totally comfortable pre-ordering. Furthermore, in these recent times of extremely looong availability / delivery times, it makes the difference between getting to enjoy using a product sooner rather than a looong time later and with all the frustrations that brings. Neither am I going to take notice of all those pixel-peeping pessimistic keyboard warriors to spout their negative criticisms online while they try to big themselves up [/end of rant].

Good idea about the 'My Menu' - I only have 'Card Formatting' and 'Battery Status' in one. Thanks, I might consider expanding that now I am becoming much more familiar with the camera.

I think we are all looking forward to seeing your images from a 'Diary of a Sofa Photographer' :D

.... Good point about the possibility of damaging the OEM cable - It is very stiff and therefore not that practical for using outdoors in the field (with a portable battery pack for example). Like you, I now keep mine for exclusive use with the OMS Battery Charger < Which I must remember to register.

I bought a braided USB-C cable from the Apple Store (INIU brand) which has its own rubber cable tie and also the connector lights up to confirm power on Fast Charge. It's perfect for recharging any of my devices while out in the field.
