Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

Showing as "Backorder" when I look at the website but I've registered for notification of availability. The price seems to be standard.

My trip isn't until November so I have time...

.... It was in stock and available to buy for a very short time. "Backorder" means it is no longer currently available < Sorry, you probably already understand this but just in case. The retailers seem to use their own different terms.

I'm kind of sort of thinking about getting another Olympus machine, seeing as the price of the used kit prices has been driven down with the release of the new OM-1.

The two machines I am looking at is:
OMD 1 MkIII
OMD E-M1X

Yes I know the 1X is a bigger machine, I am OK with this.
But is there much of difference between the two machines as in performance wise?
I am kind of drawn to the E-M1X because of the AF it has with its ability to pick up on cars/bikes.
I am in a similar position so would be really interested in hearing people’s view.

Does either camera have better AF and is image quality essentially the same. Also are there any ‘killer’ features that one camera has vs the other?

If it was my money I would go for the mkiii ,it’s lighter and smaller which is the whole idea of MFT .performance wise there’s not much to choose between any of the current olympus models a bit of research will show the available functions of both . The mkiii is the later of the two models as well . There are a myriad of functions built in so it depends what you want to do with it ,personally I love the focus peaking which allows very accurate focusing with MF lenses . And there are those that love the starry skies others that like the built in ND filters it really is a all round model ..
Whichever you go for it gives access to a growing number of lenses which are generally cheaper and lighter than any rival brands , plus with adaptors you can even use the older four thirds pro lenses and still get get AF for a lot less money than new ones .

Good summary Jeff

Thanks - that is really helpful.

Part of the problem in deciding is that both cameras have a huge number of features, many seem to be common across both but some appear to be exclusive to that model.

I currently use a Fuji outfit but the smaller size of the MFT lenses is appealing. I think the best option is to find a store with both in stock and see how they feel. I suspect the E-M1X will be a similar size and weight to my gripped X-H1

I read somewhere that focus peaking in the EVF is done in zones, rather than continuously. A play with my 1 mkii seemed to bear this out. So it didn't seem as accurate as it could be, maybe later models don't do this zoning?

think a lot depends on the length of lens ,aperture used etc , I currently have a MF 60mm f2.8 macro and a nikon 300mm f4 af-s with which I use it and to be perfectly honest I find it a doddle to use the latter lens being quite able to get b.i.f with as it tends to light up the bird .
I bought that lens cheap as the focus motor has gone (common fault) and totally love it

In a bit of a quandary at the moment , I have over the years accumulated quite a few lenses , couple of four thirds , small prime, macro , plus a couple of others , flash guns normal and ring flash etc ..
Now the thing is a rarely if ever use any of this my genre is wildlife if I do semi- macro close ups the close focus on my 100-400 handles it . And that’s the crux of the matter my 100-400 is on the camera 99.9% of the time in fact I hardly ever take anything else out with me .
So do I sell all this other gear or keep it for that rainy day when I might need it . I had great plans to try other things a while back then covid came along and put paid to it all ,not been to a city or town in a couple of years tending to stick to NR and beaches ..

Still waiting for a OM-1 camera to arrive so one with the E-m1 MK II and the Leica 100-400 f4.0-6.3 for the back catalouge.

.... You nailed it! (Yes, I looked at it on Flickr too). So I'm not sure you need an OM-1, at least for this kind of shot.

E-M5 III & 12-100mm, taken at Imber yesterday. Probably one of the last of the V2 Morgans as they were discontinued last summer.

.... What a machine! I went to school near Malvern the the home of Morgan and they have been around my life for many decades.

Perfectly lined up for perfect symmetry - The iconic symmetry of the V-Twin! And the perfect number plate has not gone unnoticed either.

No one really needs an om-1 but the new viewfinder and auto focus suggests it may well help or make life easier, if I only took static shots then I wouldnt bother. The jump from the mkii to the mkiii would be pointless but from the mkii to the om-1 is much more of a jump up. The five year warranty is a pull too. ;) I do a lot of BIF and have done and do a fair bit of motorcycle scrambling photography so it would benefit that too.

.... I agree! Latest-state-of-the-art can be a real aid (as well as complicating things!). My comment was a bit tongue-in-cheek. I don't think you'll be disappointed with the OM-1 even though there is no such thing as the perfect camera.

Golly. You did well getting close enough to take it was that lens.

Went for a walk at lunchtime with the OM-1 and the 300mm F4. Heard this little chap before i saw him, singing his heart out. Was only still for about 2 seconds so pleased the AF system (bird detect) locked onto him instantly in the deep undergrowth with many distracting branches in front and behind him. Even with the 300mm these are still huge crops (circa 3mp)

love the second one Andrew

The pre-order day for the om-1 has long gone, do you think om-system will still honour the 5 year warranty and free battery for pre-orders when they finally arrive?

So long as you ordered before the cut-off date, I see no reason why OM Systems wouldn't honour it.
