Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

I have a lot of local kestrels, but it's very hard to get near them - I'm not sure if it's because I'm on quite rural and open land, as I have found them easier in other places. The one exception was this female who was resting after lunch by the looks of it. I was able to stand really quite close - though this was with the 300mm plus 1.4 extender on the EM1iii... my husband was nearer and taking photos of her with his phone!!

I've had a good week this last week locally - which I should thank @RedRobin for - I went out to practice on my Canon with the 100-500 plus extender trying to convince myself I don't need the Olympus 150-400 f/4.5 :ROFLMAO:
I had a hare run towards me and also photographed a white tailed eagle and a female hen harrier. I plainly need to keep getting out to practice!

So where are the other (Hare, WTE & Hen Harrier) pictures.....come on chop chop (says he :cough: :cough: ;) )

A lovely portrait of a beautful bird, though I am tad concerned that she let you get so close :thinking:

Yes I did, but I think I was having a bit of a moment trying to square it all up as I was looking up at her :)

Here is the SOOC just downsized for here and made into a jpeg with the default Photolab preset.

They were on the Canon as I was working on resisting the 150-400 temptation :) I put a couple of hare pics in my 52 for the damp theme - and I added one pic of the eagle to the R thread. The hen harrier pic was utterly rubbish - almost a silhouette against the grey sky. I only took the pic as I couldn't ID it. It was smaller than a buzzard and bigger than a kestrel. Once home I could see the tell tale white rump stripe. It means they are about though!

I was a bit worried about the kestrel too, however I saw her a few days running and in fact I suspect this is her a month earlier, mating. (but on the R5 - shh!). I suspect she had chicks in there.

I don"t normally share pics unless there is a narrative of interest but confess I was very, very excited to see the eagle, so that nearly got shared everywhere ha ha!

I have found the damp Hare and the WTE ~ great to see and I like both of them......the damp Hare is to a degree 'suffering for your art' ;)

Ah, I see! Hence the tight crop on the rhs. The lower pic of the pair ?copulating is quite an action shot! Mind letting us know where you were - not in detail, obviously.........

I like the uncropped Kestrel shot. It puts her in context.
 
@jerry12953 It was a bit tight on the rhs.
This is western Isle of Wight. I think the eagles are usually spotted in the north and the east, so it was just a fly-by. I was relieved as they have found two dead in recent months. I'm not sure about the hen harrier. We had a pair fly by occasionally last year, but I only saw the male once to photograph.

I see a lot of kestrels, they even come to my garden, but they are very wary, apart from these two who were obviously busy, and that female. This was a farm building and I think she was probably very used to people coming and going and had chicks nearby. I've not seen her this year in that spot.

@Bebop I would concur.... though a crop may still be beneficial but leaving enough of the barn/shed to give it the environmental context:)

Fantastic shots. Love them both.
 
Going through the menus and setting up my OM-1.
I'm struggling to deselect Auto-ISO.
Either I'm being very slow or the menu is not intuitive.
Can anybody help?

Page 113 in the manual makes it look like you can change it in the Super control panel, or by pressing the ISO button and moving the dial?
Edit: are you in a mode other than Auto?

.... A very objectively written first review (more to come he says) by a very good wildlife photographer. He points out the negatives as well as the positives and there are some negatives, though not image quality! The pros far outweigh the cons though.

@Bebop That's a really nice Kestrel shot. I agree with the others though - Only a bit of the delapidated wooden surrounds would add context and atmosphere and also make better sense of the dark black background.

Lucky you having Flying Barn Doors (White-tailed Eagles) to photograph. I must see if I can find your shots.

Yes, I think also without context, it looks a bit like it might be a tame bird.

I felt very lucky. I've been across to the other side of the island a few times and got some distant shots. This was a marsh harrier mobbing a WTE last year - huge crop, taken with the 300mm. The other day I got much better views, but only crows and gulls mobbing it. Just record shots really, but it's interesting to see the comparative sizes.

My supplier Ffordes in Inverness-shire are still waiting for their delivery from Fedex.
 
I've shot a handful of images with my new OM-1.
My biggest 'handling' comment is that it feels like half a camera without the grip - not sure when that will arrive.
This is obviously nota criticism, more a personal 'frustration' that the accessories weren't available with the body.
And I'm getting used to the menu set up.

Just had notification that my OM-1 has arrived at SRS so should be with me in a few days. However they said they hadn't received the spare batteries as part of the promotion as well as the HLD-10 Grips yet.

Has anyone that has an OM-1 received it with the spare free battery ?

FWIW

OM Systems emailed me and advised that the battery would follow once available. With a reminder to register the camera to 'get' the 3 year warranty extension.
