Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

changing subject again ..having suffered a bit lately with failing winter light ,I have been mulling over the options available .my pension simply won't stretch to a olympus 300mm f4 which is probably the best solution . tried a couple of legacy film era 300mm lenses plus a olympus 300f4.5 M/F all suffered from bad C/A .. a few days ago one of my mates posted that he was selling all his nikon gear due to a change to sony . I already knew he had a immaculate nikon 300 mm f4 af-is nikkor lens which had a dodgy A/F motor so he wasn't going to get top dollar for it .. but as I will only need it as M/F it would do me .. there super sharp lenses as I had one myself when shooting nikon ..
so just made him a silly offer which included a nikon to MFT adaptor and now own it . gives me another option for very little money and if the problem was his camera who knows I might get another nikon body as well hmmmmmmmm

Seems like a good solution to your problem. How heavy is the Nikon Lens?

Don't be tempted to return to the dark side:thinking:

heavier than the 100-400 Dave ,but still hand holdable its one of there lightest lenses and was a favourite of mine when I shot nikon as it took these t.c's 1.4/1.7/2.0 and allowed close up semi macro shots with them the 1.7 was my fave as it gave a 500mm F/L

Possibly a white balance correction needed on this one, jeff?
Nope it’s just the mud and sand .. this is a old dock on the dee estuary , if you have ever seen the river dee estuary in north wales ,when the tides out there is just miles of sand and mud , a high tide like todays with high winds just stirs it up

If you say so.

If you say so.
I most definitely do ,even P&O ferries had to abandon the route to Ireland from the local docks due to the sand ruining the ships engines

I used to walk the estuary across to Hilbre quite often in my youth, and the water really did run a strange colour combination of mud and sand.

Thought I’d update the thread title seeing as it was outdated :D
A lot has happened in 10 years - more than anyone could imagine.
Good to see people still keeping M43 alive and well

This has probably been aired before, but I wonder (ducking down) if there’s any mileage in merging the Oly and Panny threads on the grounds that users of both breeds of camera freely interchange lens brands.

No leave it alone ,there similar but different and any merging would just cause confusion and probably arguments

Sounds fair enough to me or maybe just micro four thirds, does mentioning a brand even matter?

So using that logic should we merge all the Nikon, Canon and Sony threads into a Full Frame and APSC thread?
In my experience, people relate to brands more than sensor size. Why is it an issue to have a separate thread for each manufacturer?

Over in the Sony thread we welcome anything Sony even though it was original an A7 thread as the lenses are interchangeable and quite a few people own multiply cameras crossing divides.

In MFT world for whatever reason Oly seems to attract more attention than Panasonic but a general thread would make more sense to me as just as in Sony land the gear and issues are largely interchangeable. I've no idea if it would be possible though, if people wanted it that'd be down to the Mods and their hamster.

Bit dramatic saying its an issue, just musing really, not really bothered one way or another.
Come to think of it shouldn't this now be the OM System thread?

.... It matters because there are important differences between the m4/3 brand products and such information can be very helpful to this thread's readers.

What are the main differences and are there any serious issues?

I have Panasonic cameras and a mix of lenses including three Olympus primes and a zoom. I've never seen any inter brand issues but this may be because I don't push things too much as I just use basic settings with or without face/eye detect.

Also perhaps there are some common issues that a Panasonic user might mention that would also assist an OM System owner and vice versa.

Actually I’ve just discovered that there is a m4/3 forum, but it’s not been used for 5 years or so…. Seems like I was talking out of my wrong end again. :tumbleweed:

I have no idea. One difference used to be in body or in lens IS or not at all but I'd guess that most bodies have in body IS these days so it may be less of an issue than it was? I don't know of anything else and there doesn't seem to be anything to get in my way when using Oly lenses on Panasonic cameras.

I think the the fn button on OMS lenses have none or very limited function on Panasonic bodies.
Another one I know is the aperture ring on for example the Panasonic 15/1.7 lens doesn't work on an OMS body

Might be a conflict with some in camera lens corrections, not sure about that one though.

There are quiet a few hidden difficulties in using cross brand lenses , in fact I’ll go as far as saying that it’s often better using third party lenses on olympus bodies than Panasonic lenses.,
Yes Panasonic ones all work but not with total comparability .as to changing group titles on here the old adage applies ….if it’s not broke don’t fix it. !

Be interesting to hear what the compatibility issues are please from a Panasonic and OMS joint user point of view.
I know about the fn button and aperture ring also the Panasonic 7-14 purple flare issue.

just snippets I pick up here and there rich nothing I could confirm as I don't own or use the lenses ,and a lot of it could be down to user issues . .one that does come to mind is the panasonic 100-400 will not take olympus t.c's and quiet often has to be micro adjusted on olympus bodies ,plus is over tight when fitting on a old body but fine on a panasonic one .. issues that I have experienced .
