Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

Some good close ups there Trevor

worked well

Have you tried extension tubes on your 100-400 yet Jeff? I havent but feel I might give it a go soon to see if I can get some smaller stuff. I use my macro lenses quite a bit so it isn't a replacement for thembut, just an addition of armoury to use :D

.... I have and quickly stopped! They reduce the light too significantly (I prefer to use natural light rather than flash) and they instantly kill the ED 100-400mm infinity focus flexibility to shoot a more distant bird/animal when the opportunity suddenly presents itself.

Not got any ,but I will try the 1.4 when the light is good enough

.... The 1.4x MC-14 lives on my 100-400mm most of the time and works very well indeed for me.

Regarding shooting with the Olympus ED 100-400mm for close-ups, here is a very recent one with the 1.4x MC-14 mounted.

The combo still allows the lens' same Minimum Focus Distance (MFD) of about 6ft which is a very practical spook-safe distance although never guaranteed. The ED 40-150mm Pro + MC-20 offers about 2ft MFD and offers superb image quality.

MY NAME IS 'PLUTO' by Robin Procter, on Flickr

This image is a good example of the pros and cons of m4/3 versus full-frame insofar as m4/3 has slightly deeper DoF but less background bokeh potential, but completely flat featureless backgrounds are not my thing! No such thing as the perfect camera, eh? More info on Flickr.

The Black Darter Dragonfly wasn't staying still enough to bother trying an in-camera Focus Stack/Bracket and was shot full M-mode with F/9.

I have Focus Bracketing settings on C1-mode with a customised one button on/off toggle shortcut to it and for close-ups I shoot on a Gitzo carbon monopod to help keep things steady if I decide to bracket. When I say "keep things steady" I mean also to help accurately maintain my shooting position - Image stabilisation is a different factor.

Don't you think his face (it is a male) looks like Disney's Pluto character?

Superb Robin . Nothing more

.... Amazing DoF for F/6.3.
Hardly ever move it from wide open Robin , I really should sometimes .but forget ,it’s a O.A.P thing

A quick question, what are the pros / cons of 100-400 v the 300. To be used with the Omd 1 mkiii. Main interest is birds / wildlife.
Thanks in advance

Picked up a lovely EM10 MkII today as a backup for my EM1 MKII.

It'll be my legacy lens tester as well as the pocketable little something. Came with the 14-42 EZ and the cute little integrated lens cap.

It definitely has the old Olympus OM look about it. I like it.

.... I have both lenses but use the ED 300mm far less since having the ED 100-400mm.

The 300mm offers a wider aperture and has a Manual Focus Clutch but is a lot heavier. The 100-400mm has the extra reach and all the valuable advantages which a zoom telephoto has over a prime fixed focal length lens < Especially valuable in actually finding the target in the viewfinder when at the long end!

The 300mm has the edge in sharpness according to shooting conditions but that is splitting hairs. They are both as weatherproof as each other.

I shoot on M1X which is very similar to the M1 mkIII.

Not used the 300 , the only disadvantage is the smaller aperture on the 100-400 , in practice and I have used this lens through the winter it doesn’t really make that much difference as the newer bodies handle noise better, even with the 1.4 tc fitted as Robin will also tell you it’s still hand holdable and gives sharp shots a quick view through mine will confirm that

The 14-42 EZ is a cracking little lens it has nicest MF of any of the focus by wire lenses I have used.

It's the first time I have seen one. I love it's compactness and it'll be in the bag when I go to the USA in August. I won't be taking the EM10 though as I'll have the EM1 MkII and the 12-40 and 40-150.

I will be taking the 10 and the EZ on a walk today though.

Hi John

I have both lenses here is my thoughts others will no doubt chime in

100-400 versatile and with the 1.4tc added your reach 1120mm equivalent to full frame
value for money
optically a really good lens
good balance when mounted on OMD EM1X Mark 2/3 bodies
takes both teleconverters 1.4 and 2.0 and minimal loss of sharpness

Cons
F6.3 can be limiting when light levels drop and the tendency is to push up the iso which can be over come when noise becomes an issue with Topaz De noise I normally switch to the 300 mm when the light drops but again it depends on subject matter

300mm Pro
Excellent optics
takes both the 1.4 and 2.0 converters 840 mm full frame equivalent with the 1.4 TC minimal loss of sharpness
good balance on OMD bodies as mentioned
Can at times be short on reach at times but that can be said of any long lens relevant to subject distance

Cons
Price 2k+ new

Hope this helps

The E-M10ii is my main camera. I gave into the temptation of a 12-40 PRO a while back and haven't often switched back to the 14-42 EZ as the bigger lens is worth it's weight almost all the time. As a general purpose super small package it's great though!
If I'm not using the 12-40 then I generally have the 17mm f1.8 attached for the evenings.
