Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

All that time for a teddy ? Meh

:p

Glad you got it sorted, these things do my head in

I'm sure that first dragonfly is grinning :)
It's a damselfly (or possibly the other one that looks almost identical, azurefly or something like that) and they often look like they're grinning, they obviously enjoy having their photo taken ;)

Just bought a used E-M10 ii off ebay for a little more than I indended, but still a good price.

Can't wait to receive it and start shooting.

Any recommended lenses? Would love a 35mm equiv prime with a low f-stop.

I like the Olympus f1.8 17mm - my favourite lens.

About £220-250 used.

Can't comment on the PanLeica 15mm as I've never used it. Didn't see any for sale used when I was buying the 17mm. £460 new is too rich for me.

Just tried the shop demo with a 40-150mm and my SD card so will have a gander once in LR at the raw files.

Took various C-AF with & without tracking of walking pedestrians in the street and chimping suggests "look good" (obviously not a major test of 'can it latch onto & hold focus on a faster moving subject' ) plus a distant TV aerial (to look at fine line definition) plus a few in the shop.

FWIW I found the menu access and other control buttons straightforward to interpret & set.......though perhaps heavier than I was anticipating it had a good heft and for the short time I held it comfortable.

In regard that I wear glasses I had no issue seeing the whole viewfinder view.

Two things that struck me but might have been due to using an old SD which is Class 6 and rated x133 by Oscar.
1} the buffer for what were only brief C-AF bursts took quite a time to clear
2) in the viewfinder the last image shot froze the view for approx 2seconds.

As I am summarising this the more impressed I am with what it is and has to offer...........just need to see that confirmed by the files!?

I love the 40-150.

I have no hesitation in using it for portraits and landscape stuff.

It's sharp enough for me.

Not sure which model you're referring to, but on the EM1.2 you can set the image review time to zero so as to prevent that happening.

Yes, should have said it is the EM1 mk2.

Thanks for the heads up as to a setting to be aware of :)

Edit ~ quick extra question? Most online box contents descriptions mention nothing about a bundled flash gun but I have seen mention on non UK forum about the inclusion of the FL-LM3 flash gun..............did you get this with yours???

Oh, re SD cards ~ which ones are using???

Oh, re SD cards ~ which ones are using???

The specific setting is menu -> wrench -> rec view -> off

I bought the bundle that included 14-40 and 40-150 f/2.8 PRO lenses, and it includes the little FL-LM3 flash gun, my understanding is any bundle or the camera on it's own all include the flash gun, but don't quote me!

I'm using Sandisk 64Gb Extreme Pro 95mb/s cards, because I blew the budget on the camera and can't stump for anything faster at the moment, it does mean if you shoot a sequence of 20 - 30 shots you have to wait a few seconds for them to be written to the card.

Thanks for the feedback & insights.

I a looking at the same kit...................though looks looks like only Jessops have that bundle now.......................but l have checked the Olympus webshop and they do list plus freebie of the HLB-9 battey grip plus a £75 voucher code for summer purchase. So £75 'saved' to buy another battery and/or the SD cards???

Yeah, I got the free grip, never used it, and I bought some batteries figuring it'd eat them for breakfast but have been amazed by how good the EM1.2 is on battery life.

I mainly shoot motorsports and take the machine gun approach, firing off 10 - 20 shot bursts rather than single shots, and I've filled a 64Gb card, 4000-ish shots, on a single battery, it's way better on battery than I was expecting, spend the money on cards!

I think it was probably laughing at my bizarre stalking technique and strange yoga like pose to get the shot, whilst being bitten my mosquitos and and simultaneously dying in the heat :D

I love doing macro.
I have the Olympus 30mm macro. Has anyone got the 60mm? Is it worth the upgrade?
It will be on a em10ii

Hard to say whether it's worth the upgrade, I guess you have a 'better' working distance with insects etc that are more likely to disappear the closer you get. They bth appear optically good (I've only had the 60mm).My photos with this lens are here https://flic.kr/s/aHsmj7uqZh . I think @alfbranch ,ight have one, and he is far better at Macro so might be worth looking at some of his stuff on here in the Macro section.

Lots of macro / nature pics in this thread, so may I interject with some pics of cars, pretty much the only thing I take pictures of.

These are from recent meets of a short oval formula called Oval Track Legends, in which my son competes (car #114). This weekend we were at Ipswich and Yarmouth for a double-header, and the Yarmouth pics in particular I'm pleased with as the light was gorgeous, late evening, 6pm start, 9pm finish, and I feel I'm finally getting on top of this panning lark!

I think these are all EM1.2 with 40-150mm PRO + MC14 TC

Really nice set Mark. That lens does seem to take the TC well.

Are there many trade-offs on mixing Olympus bodies with Panasonic lenses, e.g. Olympus E-M5 and Panasonic 100-400?

Not that I am aware of, bar not being able to use both the lens IS and body IS. Its the combo I have, though still very early days.

I have the kit 40-150, I've not compared it to the pro 40-150. I find it's pretty good generally, and so light to carry around. The one thing I would say is compared to some other lenses, it's more difficult to crop (could be my technique at the longet end of course having an impact) but I got some photos I was quite happy with, though I gave up on C-AF and only used S-AF, though this is possible more the camera than lens (EM5mkii).

Thanks for the insight re: battery life. From what read the MK1 does "eat batteries" but the MK2 battery is higher capacity & they have done something about the power management.

Nice to get the free grip which obviously is not just for/about extra battery but also handling......... ;)

Thanks, and yes I can't recommend the MC14 highly enough, if the light means you're not going to go wider than f/4 anyway the MC14 gets you to 420mm (FF equivalent) effectively for free because there is no hit on image quality as far as I can see.

Yeah, but I bought 3 spare batteries figuring I'd need a spare for the body and a spare for the grip, so I have 4 batteries in total, but I find the grip only adds bulk, I rarely shoot portrait and the body alone is plenty chunky enough for my small hands, and I've only ever swapped to a 2nd battery on a day long shoot once since I've had the camera, so the other 2 spares stay in the bag. I could say I should've spent the money on faster cards but to be honest, unless you absolutely must review each image a split second after you've taken it I don't find the "slower" cards a problem, it's capacity I need because the only way I get *some* keepers out of a day's shoot is to take LOTS of photos! :D

Good filled frame, certainly shows off the rich colours of sea & rock :)

Don't often see Lapwings and they do have lovely irridescent plumage especially showing in flight :)

This a downside, as I read it, if using the Pro Capture function. This only works if using certain lenses on the EM1.2

I surmise that choice of lens and the performance of the body will influence how well C-AF works.

Re: cropping ~ most other cameras have 3:2 ratio sensors compared to the 4:3 of MFT so some cropper by decisions could be a challenge to print at 3:2 ratio sized prints (as I recall there are only 2 native print sizes at 4:3). So it is either leave enough "breathing space" in shooting or set the camera to 3:2 ratio capture.........but that waste pixels ;). A bridge I will have to cross :)

In regard to the test images ~ they did not disappoint. I took them into to LR they do process well and looking at them @100% there is a slight softness that on most sharpened well but people's faces not too sure......though thinking out loud. Do I remember right that the EM1.2 has no AA filter on the sensor, this means I need to reappraise my workflow in regard to sharpening.

But overall the EM1.2 looks like a great camera and with the bundled f2.8 lenses something like 1 kilo lighter than what I normally lug around

Number crunching time (including which bits of Canon kit to sell to help get some £'s back ) NB think I need to try this factor in the x1.4 TC that does perform well and will give me in equivalence terms, actually an extra 20mm, of what I have now with the Canon 100-400mm

MFT lenses hirng???

So far lenses for hire @StewartR does not do this category, thinking ahead as in my calculations I cannot (yet???) justify a 300mm f4 (much as i crave the FoV reach of 600mm equivalence) hiring in future for special trips might be an option.

So, have you hired MFT lenses if so where from and what was the customer experience like???

Can't speak from experience but the owner of the E-Group forum hires lenses

Range is a bit limited, they don't have the 300mm F4
Olympus used to sponsor the site.

If you are close enough to one of their participating dealers then you can use the Test & Wow service which is free - deposit required IIRC

Worth double checking but if you shoot at 3:2 ratio the ORF file should still be saved at the full sensor format of 4:3.
You should be able to frame and compose at 3:2 in the EVF/onscreen but still have the extra pixels for post processing.

I discovered that using 1:1 with a Holga lens shooting JPG+RAW - looked at the ORF in Olympus Viewer 3 and wondered for a bit about the extra width ;)

That’s correct. My em5mk2 does the same

Ah! a great way of implementing it ~ by using 3:2 for composition (also replicated in camera JPEGS?) but the whole 4:3 is recorded in the raw .orf file.

Another IMO "tick" for the Olympus team..............oh, talking of that I was impressed by the level of and standard of how well both the body but especially the lenses were engineered.

Yup - with the Holga I shoot Medium JPG+RAW at 1:1. There's not a lot of point in shooting at superfine JPG when the lens really can't resolve any detail - which is it's charm.

This is what I framed and shot
