Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

My cat was just lying in the sun and the EM-5 MKII was sitting on the shelf so I grabbed it and took a snap.

I now know why I got this camera, its nice and compact (compared to my D750) and the end results are great.

A very nice set snerkler - I was in Cambridge today myself - miserable weather and was only there for an hour before going to Bedford
Thanks. TBH the weather was bad whilst we were there until late afternoon.

The first is top drawer!
Thanks, very kind.

Wow Huw - that is stunning.

Thanks Alan, glad you like it.

@Greytop , sorry if this has already been covered but are these moon shots hand held or stabilised?
The IQ is really excellent.

Thanks for the comment.
Tripod mounted, stabilisation off, remote shutter release, electronic shutter.

that last moon shot lens/tele combo is about 1300mm so i doubt its hand held! well i couldnt with my shakes:D

Correct, or at least pretty close, 590mm-ish with what is an oldish 35mm film lens, so around the field of view of an equivalent 1180mm on m4/3rds.
The setup works very well

That's disappointing for you, what sort of ISO's were you using?

Seems quite noisy even at base ISO - I don't remember this previously. Not suggesting the camera is faulty but it just looked worse than I remember.
Having said that, I've only taken a handful of mundane snaps - didn't want to compromise my ability to return it, but I also haven't had an opportunity to really test it out in decent conditions either.
Will take a look back through my LR catalogue after tea and see what previous noise levels were.

Guess I also must've been spoilt looking at some D800 pictures that my colleague took at work earlier this week.

Ok, so the new camera might be going back. Two words....

Noise and bokeh.
Which camera? I mentioned this a few pages back after coming back to Olly, I was surprised at how much noise was present at base ISO and couldn't remember it being like that. However, I went back to my old pics and looked at those and it was there then too. I just put it down to being spoilt with the D750. It's not put me off the EM1 though, and nothing a bit of NR and masking in LR can't fix.

Bokeh is lens dependant, I assume you mean DOF?

When I come from my D750 to my EM5MKII the images look noisy even at Base iso but they are 2 different cameras my olympus performs better in certain situations.
I was also finding fault with the images at first but slowly started to see the positives in the camera and now I use my Olympus 80% of the time over my D750.
It was originally purchased as a holiday camera and now it's my main camera.

Same as me then, D750 and Olly (y). TBH though noise at base is only visible if we pixel peep :D ;)

I must be very easily pleased as I'm always delighted with the results from my E-M10 II...... remind me never to spoil it for myself by pixel peeping images from a FF camera..... :)

Which camera is it? Bokeh is down to the lens, so you can't pin that one on the camera..... :)

Just on the computer now looking at my old EM5 Mk2, EM1, EM5 and GX1 photos. yes, meant OOF areas/DOF.

Hmm, maybe this should be my approach - otherwise I am going to be buying a D500/D750 instead.

Tbh I think the bokeh of the 12-40mm is pretty nice, but at 40mm f2.8 on m4/3 DOF is never going to be particularly shallow.

I should have said comparatively ;) Obviously you can get shallow DOF if the subject is really close, I can get shallow DOF on the iphone if I really try ;)

The thing to remember is that all kit choices are a compromise.
You choose size weight image quality or whatever.

If weight and budget no barrier get yourself a Hasselblad or Phase one.
You have chosen Olympus probably if you are contributing to this thread and you will either have accept it's limitations or change or even have two systems.

You have choice. My choice is to stick.

Talk to me about wrist straps and additional EM5Mk2 batteries please...and the virtues of the PL25 1.4 vs the P25 1.7 vs the O25 1.8 would be appreciated too. Thank you.

I use ExPro batteries for every camera I've had, all worked just like OEM ones.

They are lower powered so they do not last as long but I am happy with them.
