Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

Maybe sample variation, I wouldn't describe mine as soft especially considering it's a budget lens ;)
Could well have been. I wasn't that impressed so I ran tests on a tripod alongside the Panny and the Panny was definitely sharper at the long end.

This thread is killing me. I should not have peaked in!
My EM1 and my lenses are all boxed up ready to agree a collection date with MPB and I look at some of the shots in here and think mmm it really is excellent. I only fancied a change of system. Now I'm looking at lenses again.... Argh!

I had been thinking of a change too, well not so much a change but an addition but have decided against it.
I'm sticking with my Olympus gear which I believe on balance is excellent given it's compactness and weight (in general terms).

Brilliant Robin shot Huw!
Unfortunately with my joints struggling with even the weight of the OMD system, and also my dexterity in changing lenses being poor, I have now invested in a Panasonic FZ1000 bridge. It's been a very hard decision to make, because it also means admitting that my health is getting worse! My husband has persuaded me to hang on to some of the kit for a while, but one of my E-M5 MkII's is definitely going now.
Seeing that wonderful image of yours Huw makes me realise how much I will miss the Olympus gear, but when I took the FZ1000 out, it was clear why I'd not been enjoying my photography of late. I still have a lot to learn about the Panasonic but considering it's a bridge camera it's not too bad.
I shall have to see if I can find a bridge camera thread on here next!

That Robin shot is fantastic mate, really shows how much detail M43 sensors can capture.

That does look pretty snazzy but think I'd prefer it without the grip (which is fine as it looks to be optional), not cheap though. Wonder what the knob on the front does?

Given the price I think this will give a pretty reasonable benchmark on how the EM1ii will perform - I await reviews with interest.

I agree. I think the PEN-F is going to be a very interesting benchmark. It's always difficult when you buy into a system (for good reason) then have to sit and watch all the competitors releasing their latest and greatest gear that seems to outperform what you've got. I expect the PEN-F will give us some visibility on where Oly is going, and hopefully, give us some faith that we've invested wisely. My pro glass wasn't cheap, and part of the buying decision was my future expectation that Oly will continue to push the envelope as well as minimize the trade-offs of m4/3 versus the larger sensors. Can't wait to see what they've been up to.

In these times of mirrorless advances, one brand will take the lead and the others will respond and come back, causing the first brand respond after that. If you are rich or something, you could jump ship back and forth. But the ping pong effect is fairly predictable. So you might as well stay put.

I particularly like the firmware update wars.

Thanks for the comment :)
....but sorry to hear that Marcia, hopefully the Panny Z1000 will be a more flexible solution for you, by all accounts it's a very good camera (having read a few reviews).

Thanks Jon, taken with the 75-300 MkII @ 300mm f/7.1 if I remember correctly.

Thanks Huw. It is surprisingly good for a bridge camera probably because of the sensor size, however, it certainly can't produce the results of the OMD cameras. I need to get my head around that before I am totally comfortable.
My husband shoots Nikon, and his BIF shots have always been far superior to mine so there'll be no change there! Having said all of that, I can now spend longer out walking and taking photos without being limited by the weight, which in turn has made my photography a much more pleasurable experience.
Being so heavily invested in Olympus I do feel I should move all of my kit on, but John being forever the optimist thinks that I could improve and then I will be kicking myself. Reallistically, improvement is highly unlikely unless a miracle drug is discovered, but his other arguement is that I can use the Olympus gear in the garden for bird photos and the dogs racing around, and that has made me hesitate. So for now I am selling one body and hanging on to the rest. I shall reconsider after the summer, so you may not have got rid of me totally quite yet. I intend to compare garden shots (birds, butterflies, dragonflies, insects and flowers) between the 2 systems and make a decision based on that. Certainly out and about it will be the Panasonic!

Yes I'd looked if anyone was closer to begin with. Just wishing to compare with my Sony

Jessops and LCE in Manchester usually keep them in stock if you dont find anyone near just take and SD card and take some pics.

Yes I'm aware. However you'd be desperate to visit Jessops in Manchester

I'm going to get either a em10 or em5 (both mk1) to use alongside my em1 (mainly due to the better LE capabilities), what would you get and why?

I assume LE is long exposure? Are they really that much better?

Other than weather sealing I preferred the EM10 mainly due to the slight difference in size and the higher res LCD. I'm a bit picky about these things but using the EM5 LCD is like going back to an iphone 3 after being used to retina screens ;) OK so it's not what you buy a camera for first and foremost, but when everything else is so similar anything that can improve the pleasure of using it is worth considering. For long exposure the difference in IBIS doesn't matter obviously as it'll be on a tripod.

The EM5 mark 1 doesn't have a LCD screen. It's the mark 2 that does.

Is the screen on the back not LCD? If not I meant the screen on the back is low res compared to the EM10 (y)

The mark one has an OLED display. The mark 2 went over to LCD. I don't know what retina screens are though.

Yep, apparently from everything I've seen there is a massive difference, certainly in the em5, can't seem to find too much info on the em10 but I believe its the same sensor? As for the display, thats something I hadn't taken into consideration, I didn't like the low res back screen on my Nikon d3100 when I had it so I think that's possibly made up my mind. Cheers

The em5 is hardly low res, sorry to throw a spanner in the works

It's not low res per se but is lower res andt having had higher res screens previously it did leap out at me instantly (had the A77 at the time). As I said, I compare it to an iphone 3 screen vs a retina screen on the iphone 5/6. Not everyone is as picky as me with these things though ;)

Just for info the EM5 is just over 600,000 dots vs just over 1million on the EM10.

Thanks for this, i currently have the 14-42ez pancake lens on my EM10, was seriously thinking of getting the 12-40 2.8 but £400-£500 is a hell of a lot of money for me at this moment in time for one lens. would also love an EM1.

It is a lot of money I got a used but as new one for just over £400. I'm liking it so far. If I do decide to sell it then it would not be a great cash loss, not like the loss the original owner had.
Thing is it may make me want an EM1 now to go along with my 10

I can't seem to see any buying options on that site (probably user error) so I've emailed them as they aren't open today. Thanks again Damian.

I see they have a reasonably priced 12-40mm as well.....must resist for now...

I think they sell on a commission basis ( unless that's just coincidental when I've enquired about a few items ) but they've been good responding

Edit - oops, can of worms giving you the link then :o

Ive never had any problems dealing with Aperture. I always find their prices very competitive.

Welly I ran both and its very hard to distinguish, the FZ1000 was so good it did make me think do I need all this stuff, its light and has nice reach I think youll be fine.

As some of you are trading in, what you all moving to or are you waiting for the new Em1II announcement? I was impressed with Wex I was made an offer for all my gear and after their analysis they rang and actually gave me another £130, I think over all I didn't lose as much as I thought the times good to PX before the announcement.

Weathers been pretty crap lately so since I got the A7Rii ive aint done much but I managed to get to Bolton abbey and take some good ones... loved it, kinda same as Em1 Em5 5 axis ticks the box and my methods stay the same

Thank you Rob for the reassurance boost. I always prefer the view of someone on here than the "official" reviews. I have to say that I'm liking it so far!!
