Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

The problem with the Olympus fully articulated implementation, is the EVF is off whenever the screen is open. Meaning you can't switch between them quickly like you can with the flip up screen. I hope Panasonic didn't have that limitation.
Change the EVF eye sensor off and use the back Fn button to toggle between EVF and LCD, this way you can use the EVF with the screen flipped out.

Thanks. The Olympus rep didn't know that. But then you lose automatic switching when the screen is flat on the back. Such an unnecessary limitation. Come on Olympus. Buck up!

Agreed, it's an annoying workaround. Mind you, I do sometimes have it in manual EVF anyway when I'm walking around with the camera in the strap because it's forever switching from EVF to LCD as it 'swings around' in auto

A few from the other week with E-M5 and 75mm (because I didn't have anything longer!)

We went to a sealed knot re-enactment and initially I didn't get why they did it, not really my cup of tea, it didn't take long to work it out though.

Some cracking shots there, convey the moment really well I think.

I also prefer the tilt screen of the EM1. The fully articulated screen of my EM5 II is a bit of a faff having to swing it out to the side to use it at any angle other than flat against the camera. Doubles the width of the camera. With my EM1, I can just title up or down without it sticking out the side of the body. I suppose if you are big into video (which I'm not), then it's fine.

I realise that I am most likely totally in the minority though.

Not at all. it seems to be an equal split. If you are used to how quick the flip-up type is, the OM-D twist is a pain. Especially when you don't want to miss a shot. It's just a shame the flip up is useless in portrait mode..

Maybe other manufacturers do the twisty screen better than the OM-Ds? Sony for sure.

Right Girls i gotta fly out to Texas with work till next Thursday, I'm in the dog house because kids are on holiday. anyway I'm thinking Cameras when i get there need to expel some GAS..
This is the local store

I'm going to take the Em5II with 14-42 EZ lens as i don't want loads of gear, did think about taking the FZ1000 but a bit bulky.
So if one was to buy something what would you all go for...

My dream would be the A7Rii with Zeiss 24/70 but its too much to be honest, I'm gonna hang in for the EM1 II next year and Possibly Nikons new D850 D900 to compliment the Olympus.
So i was thinking about the 40-150 pro, but ebays looks cheaper...

Any advice on what i should get. the FZ300 i would have gone for but its not out yet over there... could do with a compact really. Ive had the RX100III and didn't like it too small and EVF was crap...

Panasonic by the sound of things too

Yeah i must admit it was a toss up between that when i got the Rx100... mmmm maybe i push boat out and get Lieca 1 just for willy waving status..

The one on the Sony A77 and A77-II is the best flippy screen I've ever used. That being said, 95%+ of the time I only want it to flip up for low level landscapes so the one on the EM10, and my D750 is ideal for this.

Looks like I got a bargain then :)

Behop which Peak Design one did you get, I can't decide between the slide lite or the leash.

I'd looked before I posted and couldn't see it on Amazon, but looking again, it is this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00CBPIRYS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1445420225&sr=8-3&keywords=peak+design

I think they have brought out a newer model since this one. I like it because it's light, doesn't obstruct the tripod socket, and can be made long enough to wear it across body, which is what I usually do. For this camera I would prefer not to have the facility to detach it really. Those little clips can get in the way just a tad.

Olympus EPL 5 gone tits up!

Switch camera on and all I get is two clicks of the shutter, then camera switches off. Screen lights up but no graphics on it.

Was working so well a couple of days ago.

Anyone have a similar problem?

Is it fixable?

Ebay camera so no warranty...................

3 1/2 hours later the camera is working just fine.

It must have been asleep!!!

I see that this camera does sometimes have this fault..............

No Changed battery in case.

The camera in its well padded bag spent the previous night in the car outside so wonder if the cold did it in, who knows.

On Youtube there is a video of someone with the same problem, and a google search shows several such problems.

If it occurs again, it will be a new camera.....There is an ebay epl 5 with only 560 shutter clicks for £150 or so. Quite tempting.

But I am collecting u/s camera bodies at the moment. My old Pentax Ist decided to give up the ghost recently. All those lenses are now unused.....

Thanks for comments both.

Alas the camera has done it again just now.

The firmware in the camera body is 1.4, so I think its the latest. The lens is 1.0

Will run with it for a couple of days, and then possibly look to replace it. I know the shutter count is between 8 & 9000.

Not sure id that is old or not.

Disappointing really. If I had not got four nice lenses, I might look at other brands. And don't really want to learn a new system..

Hey ho.......

There might be a nice E-M5 appearing in a day or two in the classifieds ;-)

(the EM1 arrived yesterday :-) )

Having finally got the strap that came with the EM1 out the box, i'm suddenly taking a keen interest in the "which strap" comments.

i think after a bit of searching i'm going for one of these http://shop.photomadd.com/products/peak-design-slide-lite-pre-order . Looks just the job for m4/3. However i quite like the look of a wrist strap too, anyone use one? how do you get on with one? does the camera get knocked when it is on the strap?
I use 'Cordy Cat' wrist straps from www.cordweaver.co.uk and fit them using Op/Tech Uni-loops so I can quickly replace them with an Op/Tech sling strap if I feel like it.

I know nothing about flash photography, but for health reasons I am considering using flash on my EM-5 MKII, and trying my hand at indoor stuff in the house. Not sure what yet, but would anyone be able to recommend a decent flash, for a beginner that isn't too pricey please?
Sorry to be so vauge, but as I say it's a step into the unkown for me, so I am hoping I will feel more enthused once I start!
Many thanks!

The Nissin Di466 is easy to use and cheap.

Can the I466 be operated wirelessly from EM1? TIA

It is a slave flash that can be fired by another flash so you would use the FL-LM2 that came with the camera to fire it or use a cable. If you want a flash to fire by the in camera RF you need a Olympus FL-36R FL-50R or FL-300 etc

It can be used off camera too I suggest a diffuser will make a big difference
Thank you for the tip Alf. I think it's time I did a lot more reading up on the subject but the Nissin flash looks like the way to go for starters
